POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
The JABCECC was recently asked to appear on an episode of Storage Wars to talk about some items found in a locker pertaining to wild animal handling. The locker likely belonged to an animal rehabilitator. These opportunities give us an opportunity to get our message, of being kind to all animals, out to a wider and more diverse audience compared to who we normally reach. This is just a short clip that is in public domain. The full episode can be found at A&E. Thanks to Becca Brando at www.entertainmentpublicrelations.com for setting this up. by @jabcecc

Some connections are built on a shared love for animals—and a shared commitment to giving them a better life. šŸ¦Šā¤ļø

Our friend and fellow fox rescuer @nicolenavarrounfiltered from @pawsitive_beginnings_inc came out to visit, and there was something especially meaningful about sharing our Russian domesticated foxes with her.

When you spend your life rescuing and caring for animals, you recognize the little things: their personalities, their trust, and the relationships that grow when they feel safe and loved. Sharing those moments with someone who understands both the joy and the weight of this work is something special.

Different sanctuaries, connected by the same heart. Thank you, Nicole, for everything you do for foxes—and for sharing this time with ours. 🐾 by @jabcecc

Friday Chat w/Vlad

Hey, it’s Vlad. Many of you that have been to the center have met our friendly neighborhood dorkwolf. If you had facial hair you probably met him very up close and personal…perhaps a bit too personal, and maybe even received a complimentary beard inspection from a wolf with no concept of personal boundaries. I’ve had numerous coaching sessions with Lucan, aka dorkwolf, working on a look that would even approximate majestic. Unlike with me, it just doesn’t come naturally to him. He prefers to roll around on the floor, nibble on beards, and act like he’s auditioning to be Barney the dinosaur.

I came up with the idea of having some professional glamour shots taken of Lucan. I figured maybe he would give us a few milliseconds of majestic so at least we could show people he was capable of it. To say it was a challenge was an understatement. He’s known our photographer, Anabel DeFlux, since he was a puppy so naturally he had to act like a dork for her. Apparently, being dignified around an old friend was just not on his agenda. Then he wanted to eat her camera bag, followed by asking for belly rubs. This is a difficult artistic direction to work with, ā€œwilderness predatorā€ loses some credibility when the predator is upside down requesting tummy service. He just wasn’t hitting his mark. When he finally got his composure back together we managed to get a few pictures that would make his ancestors proud… or at least not shake their heads in disbelief.

So if you think any of these pictures make Lucan look noble, powerful, mysterious, and most importantly majestic, please appreciate the artistry. Anabel captured something truly rare.

A wolf briefly forgetting he was a dork.

There is always hope…. When there are humans that remain hopeful!
Sakari was at the end of the road, no babies meant the fur farmer would kill her. Luckily, we were there to take her away and give her a safe haven. A chance to play, a chance to dig in dirt, walk on earth, sleep in comfort, and have a friend.

It is generally the basic gifts in life that fulfill us the most: connection with another, a moment to enjoy silence, laughter, good food, and freedom… freedom to be you!!!

Next time you are depressed because you want something more… remember what you already have!!

You save them and they save you!
After a trying day, knowing that I can spend some healing time with these 4 babies we were able to get out of RU last year, fills my soul with peace and comfort.
It was a year long emotional roller coaster working every angle to find a solution to get them safely out of Russia. Days that crushed my soul and days that gave me hope… but I never gave up…. And these beautiful 4 are more than I could imagine- more beautiful, more perfect, more full of energy and love - tonight I have the privileged of spending some time just quietly with them… connecting… being… loving and being loved! by @jabcecc

When we make a commitment to an animal it is a forever commitment. We don’t stop until we find a way to bring that animal to the center.

We are honored to have the Russian domesticated foxes (Belyaev foxes). Many of you know about this population and their significance in the scientific community. Many of you have come to visit them at the center.
This is a video of Yuri, taken while he was a baby in Novosibirsk, RU. We hadn’t found a path to rescue him and his 8 friends when I received this video…. But I never ever stopped finding a way to bring them to us. So@wine gave me a on the other day- it said ā€œEverything is figuroutableā€ it had a dog with a cup of coffee. That literally what circulates in my brain all day - I know there is a solution, I just need to figure it out… and so, 9 of the puppies (kits) in 2020 were safely in our arms in Nov.

While that drive gets me in trouble a lot in life- it is also what makes our center able to accomplish some difficult rescues. We don’t give up…. Because when it comes to saving lives, everything is figuroutable!! by @jabcecc

The BBJs: All grown up and living their best life at the center! The center is home to three Black Back Jackals: Shaka, Nalla, Zuri.

Did you know: They represent an ancient branch of the canid family tree. Black-backed jackals belong to one of the most basal lineages of the wolf-like canids. Their lineage diverged millions of years ago, which is why they are now classified in their own genus, Lupulella, rather than Canis.

🦊 Want to do something wild with your time? We’re looking for volunteers!

At the Judith A. Bassett Canid Education & Conservation Center, volunteering is more than lending a hand. It’s a chance to learn, connect, contribute to conservation, build new skills, meet some pretty extraordinary animals and humans, and become part of something that matters.

And right now, we need people with all kinds of talents.

✨ December 13 Fundraiser | One Paseo, Del Mar
Help us create a magical fundraising event! We need volunteers for event preparation, setup, guest engagement, activities and on-site support.

šŸŒŽ Education & Conservation
We’re looking for Educational Program Managers and confident presenters who can help us bring conservation, coexistence and the science of canids to life for our guests.

🐺 Animal Care, Handling & Training
Have experience with animal behavior, training or handling? We’d love to hear from you.
Direct animal interaction requires a minimum commitment of 2 volunteer days per month and completion of at least 3 months of volunteering and training first.

šŸ“± Social Media & Content
Help us tell our animals’ stories, share conservation messages and grow our community.

🦊 Tours & Guest Experiences
Help welcome visitors, support tours and create memorable, educational experiences at the Center.

General volunteer commitment:
• Minimum 8 hours per month
• 6-month commitment
• $25 onboarding fee, which includes your JABCECC volunteer T-shirt

You don’t have to be an animal expert to make a difference. We need educators, organizers, storytellers, creative thinkers, event people, conservation lovers and dependable humans who want to roll up their sleeves and be part of the work.

The benefit goes both ways. Give your time, and you may be surprised by how much you learn, how deeply you connect, and how good it feels to know your effort directly supports animal welfare, education and conservation.

The same attachment systems that allow animals to give us such profound feelings of safety, connection and joy may also help explain why losing them hurts so deeply.

Grief doesn’t mean our capacity for those feelings disappeared. The relationship that awakened them is simply no longer physically there.

Science is beginning to understand this more deeply. Grief involves the brain’s attachment and reward systems, while positive interactions with animals have been associated with changes in oxytocin, cortisol and neural systems involved in bonding, stress regulation and reward.

And perhaps that helps explain something we see at our Center.

Guests often share that they recently lost a beloved animal. Here, they’re surrounded by people who understand that this wasn’t ā€œjust a pet.ā€

We listen.

And then something beautiful sometimes happens.

A fox approaches. There is eye contact. Curiosity. A laugh. A moment of connection.

The new animal doesn’t replace the one they lost.

Instead, perhaps that connection gently reminds the brain—and the heart—of something grief can temporarily make difficult to feel:

The joy, safety and connection that existed within that bond are still within us.

A new connection doesn’t erase grief.

It can exist beside it—and perhaps awaken those pathways of joy again. by @jabcecc

By Lucan: WOLF CONSERVATION: STEWARDSHIP IN ACTION

There is important movement happening for wolves in the West.

California has enacted new wildlife coexistence legislation, including support for wolf-livestock coexistence and compensation. Colorado is also reevaluating how it manages conflicts involving wolves.

But across the U.S., wolf protection remains inconsistent.

Why does that matter?

Wolves are apex predators and a keystone species. Their presence can influence prey behavior, vegetation, scavenger communities, and the balance of entire ecosystems.

They don’t exist outside the system.

They help shape it.

The lesson is bigger than wolves.

We have the power to alter ecosystems quickly — but with that power comes responsibility.

We are not owners of this planet. We are its stewards.

Stewardship means finding ways for people, livestock, predators, and wild landscapes to coexist. It means using science, supporting communities affected by wildlife, and recognizing that healthy ecosystems depend on relationships we may not always see.

Wolves do not need to be romanticized to be worth conserving.

They simply need the opportunity to fulfill the ecological role they evolved to play.

Conservation isn’t just about saving species. It’s about protecting the relationships that keep our world alive. by @jabcecc
