I celebrated four years of sobriety from alcohol yesterday, August 5th. 🥃 In honor of that, here’s a full set of me talking about the night I nearly died drunk driving.

Thank you to all my friends and family, who have supported me in my determination not to drink. I turned 23 two weeks before my nearly fatal wreck. My life was aimless and I thought I would never amount to anything. I thought it was best to drink all day every day because I was worthless and didn’t deserve to live. I kept warm 40oz miller high lifes under my bed and drank them when I woke up. I’d drink airplane bottles on the way to work and at work too. I still did stand-up comedy, but the flame was dimming. The drive to get it was leaving. In retrospect, there’s signs when one is getting ready to die. Even if they don’t know it. You destroy your body and mind with the substance until you’re so vulnerable one decision could take you out. Mine was driving drunk. At first, I could pretend it was cool. But I knew I was a loser. Compulsion, shame and maybe those Irish genetics drove me deeper into the hole.

I’m so grateful for my mom and dad for supporting me in those early days of sobriety after the wreck. And thanks to Alcoholics Anonymous for introducing my parents to each other in the first place. I’m happy to be here. ❤️ taken in Goodnights Comedy Club by @jackcrissey

Sam Thorn plays Hijack Comedy this Wednesday 10/21!!! @slamwisebamgee @hijackcomedy Free music and comedy show! Sam is one of the most talented songwriters I’ve met in North Carolina. We are so excited to have him back on Hijack this week!

Sam Thorn is a singer/songwriter with roots in the quiet suburbs of southern England and the coast of California. Now based in Durham, his songs are quiet time capsules of found objects, spare syllables, and silly jokes, fished out of a sea of reverb and love - an attempt to find stable footing in a world that gets wobblier every day. You can find him around the triangle singing with his own band Flower Gauntlet and playing saxophone with rambunctious rock outfit The Rattletraps. @the.rattletrap

Hijack Comedy is a weekly comedy talk show, held every Wednesday @cannonball_music in Raleigh, North Carolina. Every show features a line up of new and seasoned comedians, plus a musical guest. Hijack Comedy’s unique format and chaotic energy has been a hit with audiences around the triangle. Don’t miss your chance to experience Hijack!

thinking of a caption …. what’s that ladys name … ahh yes, cyndi lauper!

I drove to Asheville a few days ago to see a concert with my coworkers. The band was called Knocked Loose, and I learned, that I know nothing about metalcore. Everyone was moshing, and I was the only one there wearing a men’s wearhouse tie over a wife beater. We didn’t have time to stop for cigarettes. So, I stood there naked, without my instrument. The music was all noise, no melody, and the lead singer had at least seven different kinds of screams. His vocal control was impressive. But it was hard for me to pretend to give a shit. Like, I mean, the band was really good. But, all I listen to these days are blues, country and 70sish hard rock. This band wasn’t near geriatric enough to interest me. Denzel Curry opened, and I got hurt while crowdsurfing during his set. By that I mean, I got really excited while crowdsurfing due to the intensity of his music, and started thrashing around. Then everyone suddenly said, fuck this guy, and dropped me back first onto the concrete. Word to the wise: if a bunch of people are carrying you, don’t kick ‘em in the face. Or something. After getting back up, I bummed a cigarette from a girl and explained how I my hurt my back. She nodded and gave me a Marlboro 27. I drove back to Raleigh and stopped at a restaurant in Marion called Bessie’s Diner. I’m always questing for a real diner experience. I ate the $13 Steak and Eggs. I knew it was a good diner, because when I walked in, everyone glanced at me with suspicion. Driving hours while sleep deprived is hard work. Especially when you hit state fair traffic while getting into Raleigh. I’m excited to get out of town again, soon. Come see @hijackcomedy this Wednesday 10/21 with special musical guest @slamwisebamgee and featured comedian @erin.the.don
