Hi👋

This isn't the "version" of me I had anticipated of being these past few months.

This "version" of me who'd happily spend hours along riverbanks or in the bushes.

This pandemic has really found its way of meddling with many people's plans and who we've become as a result of adapting to this unforgiving climate. At the beginning of 2020 I had the intent of adding more client based work to my portfolio and growing it from there. Obviously with lockdown that became extremely challenging. With all the newfound time thanks to never ending lockdowns I ended up finding fulfillment in dabbling with wildlife photography--a subgenre of photography I've always wanted to explore but just never had the time (or dedicated gear) for. While it has its similar approaches to landscape photography, I'd argue it's the one genre that demands the most patience and persistence out of photographers. But not only has it gotten me out to enjoy nature around us as a much needed break during the pandemic but it has also forced me to look at the world in ways I've never tried to before. I've also thorough enjoyed the people I met along the way, the chats we've had, along with all the criticism and feedback you've given me!

As lockdown slowly lifts and more of the general population become vaccinated I'll be looking to spend more time on client based work! So if you know anyone (or yourself) who wants to shoot--whether it be for some rebranding or a special event--hit me up! I'd love to help you embrace the journey🙌

(And no this doesn't mean I'm stopping wildlife photography completely I'm simply shifting my attention a bit and this page will continue to see mostly nature work😉) taken in Ontario, Canada by @jackhonglee

A night out with the stars🌌

If nobody's told you yet today, don't worry about your lack of progress or your plans being foiled for the year. The pandemic has affected everybody all around the world. Given how we typically measure progress, just know that nobody is going anywhere (with reason) and you just need to continue looking after yourself. Spend some extra down time doing what you enjoy and don't worry about time flying by. Your job applications, school applications, startups, whatever it may be, will get there eventually. If you can dedicate extra efforts to it now, then all the power to you👊

24mm // iso 1000 // f1.7 stopped down a bit from 1.4 to try and get more of us in focus // 10" single exposure📷

One of the few times I wish I had a wider lens...the frame isn't what I'd like it to be (esp factoring in ig ratio) but it's still a moment I really enjoyed. In the center of the sky, you see Jupiter as the brightest source. On its left is Saturn and on its right is the milkyway. But what really made the shot was all the meteors you can see!

Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend is over which marks about a year since I decided to pick up this camera and dabble in photography📅

If I had to pick which shots best encapsulate this journey over the past year it would be the series of photos I shot here at Delicate Arch. Between overcoming my anxiety of driving a rental in foreign land to working up the courage to solo hike in isolation at night, among many other questionable choices I may have made over the past year, I'm more than pleased with this equilibrium I have achieved to be able to spend as much time as I do behind a camera and entertain to my obsession with long exposures🙏

Here's to more opportunities to get out and shoot and see how far I'm able to take this hobby. taken in Delicate Arch by @jackhonglee

Tri-coloured lunar eclipse🌙

Last week we were treated to another (partial) lunar eclipse! Apparently eclipses come in pairs so it was nice being able to also experience the total solar eclipse in Spain weeks prior.

This was a difficult exposure to nail. Right as the eclipse approached its peak, some clouds blew by! I was able to find gaps in the clouds and have some patches assist me in preserving the bright, lighter edge of the eclipse while also exposing for the shadow. Frame 1 is the processed version of a single exposure capturing the blue band that is a result of sunlight that gets filtered by the Earth’s ozone layer. Frame 2 was the peak of the eclipse, unedited (will look even more underwhelming with ig compression). Frame 3 was an attempt at shooting the milky way while the moonlight was mostly obstructed. You can really see the natural gradient of light pollution hiding a portion of the stars! Swipe to the final frame for a bonus portrait of @iamjojo performing at CNE with a blood moon backdrop!👀

📷: @sonyalpha α1 & @sigma 300-600 @ 600mm, f4 (for the moon pics)

I love taking every chance to shoot the blood moon whenever possible. I think it’s a fun challenge and an even more fun celestial event to experience!

Worth every 80 seconds.

Quick edit from this evening. Check out that solar prominence though!!

Interesting to note: hard to pull out details in post due to the crazy heat haze from Spain’s heatwave. Locally it was about 41°C or almost 106°F. Files from the 2024 eclipse in Canada seemed easier to work with, likely due to the milder weather.

Onto totality number 3!?👀 taken in Spain by @jackhonglee

After some Vegas fun in May, I rented a car and drove down to the Arizona heat in search of some wildlife. I had a great time the last time I traveled solo to AZ so I knew I had to do it again someday. This time, I had no accommodations booked ahead of time…just tons of research on wildlife sightings 😂 let’s just say it was quite a task to research a foreign country! Back home, I obviously have the leisure of walking different places many times over the years…but here I really felt the pressure of wanting to find things right away. Let’s just say the research paid off!

Pictured is a burrowing owl getting ready to set off to hunt for the evening. He perched and sang (frame 2) to his mate, perfectly facing the setting sun. I waited about 45min for the owl to land on this sign…

Spring vibes 🌸

I’ve permanently lost track of time…where did April go!? Local blossoms are blooming and all the wildlife is returning. Foxes and owls—what an incredible time! But first, throwback to some peaking cherry blossoms up in Aomori prefecture in Japan.

Forever behind on sharing some work but in the meantime…(dw there’s some fun things in the works!!)

“Wolf!”

…exclaimed my friend as it casually trotted right by our slowly moving car. Officially known as the eastern wolf or the Algonquin wolf, a species that usually triggers much debate over its origins and classification, is an animal I never thought I’d have the privilege of encountering in Algonquin.

I was desperate for a nap in the backseat after all the driving we did around the park but instantly woke up to find myself locked in with the child locks accidentally left on…Thankfully, the interaction—while only a minute or so long—was long for me to grab my camera and hop out of the car to capture this moment! Happy with the late afternoon light, the snowbank background, and its overall posture! Definitely one for the books and immediately printed.

What a winter it’s been so far!

One of the rougher winters we’ve had in years but still thankful for all the adventures nonetheless! A bunch of sketchy drives later and I’ve had the privilege of observing and photographing the beautiful owls we’re so lucky to have winter near us. In order of appearance: barred, great gray, eastern screech (rufous morph), snowy, northern saw-whet, long-eared, and short eared (with prey).

Wildlife photographed with @sonyalpha α1 and @sigmaphoto 300-600 f/4 lens throughout Jan 2026.

Self portraits shot on Sony α7iv & sigma 85mm f/1.4 dn lens.

Does gear matter?

Long answer short*: yes, and don’t let anyone ever tell you otherwise. The bottom line is that better gear (when used appropriately of course) can drastically improve your consistency and increase your keepers.

On the other hand, better gear is meaningless if you aren’t constantly getting out there and making moments like these happen. I look back at this photo often—it’s one of my all time favourite snowy owl encounters—and I can’t wait to improve upon it. The catch? This was a moment from 2020(!!) back when I had more basic gear and I have yet to experience a similar encounter with these gorgeous owls from the north, swooping in and landing on a nearby roadside tree. Reflecting back on these moments helps keep me grounded.

With that said though, I hear it’s a great season for snowy owls so here’s hoping we have more epic encounters 👀

Quiet Kyoto mornings☕️

Ten days left of 2025 and I’ve been seeing a lot of posts of the “top 10 moments” and this was definitely one of my top moments! I get asked a lot about shooting empty frames and let’s just say if I can get this clear frame during Golden Week, so can you 😉 and at least I didn’t have to edit out a pylon lol (iykyk)

Owl snoozin’ on a 🍄💤

After our local screech was MIA for a while, a huge mushroom grew and took over the cavity. We were worried the owl wouldn’t return to an occupied cavity but to our surprise it returned and seemed content just perching on it! I’m glad I was able to catch the mushroom going through the elements. Unfortunately, while trying to get some beading rain on the mushroom, the rain just seemed to soak through (but you can still see the beading 💧 on the feathers!). The mushroom has since fallen out of the tree.
