POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
While catching up with editing stories, I found these photos from our @twygmag roadtrip to @karoo_winter_wool_festival in July.

Thank you @tandekilemkize @kasper_knudsen_ and @georgia.altbeker for coming along this year to write stories, capture the magic that happens in the Karoo and as always to learn about the local wool industry's value chain.

Thank you to the Karoo Winter Wool Festival for making this annual event happen. And thank you to @viviers.studio and @hovendesign for curating the amazing Karoo Kraal exhibition, bringing more than 70 pieces of woollen pieces into this space. 🩵

On a very hot summer day when I was in London, @berniyates took Reneé Neblett (@kokrobitey.institute ) and I on a tour of @csm_news - there is a permaculture dye garden on the roof of the school. A studio of looms. Another one for knitting machines. Rows and rows of sewing machines. A textile studio where @flo_hawkins showed us around. A lab where new materials are grown. A wonderful place for creative thinking and innovation.

What a privilege to be in a city at the same time as three magnificent exhibitions: Frida Kahlo, Tracey Emin and Anish Kapoor.

I loved the portrait of @traceyeminstudio "Being Frida" by @marymccartney in the Frida exhibition.

What a privilege it was to sit around a campfire fuelled by wool, a glass of South African red wine in hand, sharing ideas with @jackiemay_sa @adeles_mohair @gerbercogroup and @stephanie.bentum.textiles

Our conversation centred on one of the greatest opportunities facing South Africa’s natural fibre industry: the possibility of decentralising wool processing into the rural communities where the wool is actually produced.

Imagine creating value where the fibre begins its journey. Imagine jobs, skills, entrepreneurship and economic activity flowing back into the towns and farming communities that have sustained our sheep industry for generations.

South Africa grows some of the world’s finest natural fibres. Perhaps the next chapter isn’t simply exporting wool—it’s building thriving rural industries around it.

Sometimes the best ideas don’t emerge from boardrooms. They begin around a campfire, surrounded by good people, good conversation and a shared belief that our natural fibres can help shape a more prosperous future for rural South Africa. 🇿🇦 Thanks for the opportunity @karoo_winter_wool_festival #capewoolssa #nwga #mohairsouthafrica by @jackiemay_sa

In its 5th year, @karoo_winter_wool_festival remains a must-visit for anyone interested in local fibres. Farmers love it. Spinners love it. Makers love it. Artists love it. And if you're interested in economic development and adding value to a supply chain which has largely been destroyed by globalization and international competition, you'll love it even more. This is such an important place for learning and connecting. It inspires thinking about the opportunities that lie between two stages (fibre production / raw material and end product / consumer goods) of the supply chain. How can we build economic opportunities - big and small - with the raw materials we produce in South Africa (and Africa)? (Sometimes you have to start small when you're aiming big.)

My conversation in the Karoo Kraal with @adeles_mohair @gerber_and_co and @karoofarming farmer Brett Walker and Stephanie de Beer was so hopeful. For example, Stefan Gerber told us that he has produced 💯 made in South Africa wool jumper for @uniqclothing.sa - the wool is grown, cleaned, spun and knitted in South Africa = Made In South Africa. @adeles_mohair is a national treasure: founder Adele Cutten has been working in the Eastern Cape producing hand-made mohair products for about 40 years - training people and changing lives.

The Wool World exhibition tilted Karoo Kraal was contained in a shed of beautifully made and crafted products made from wool and other natural fibres. Curated by @viviers.studio and @hovendesign it showed what designers and makers are creating and producing. Be proud, very proud.

The weekend ended with the Woljol featuring @dodonyoka.za Oh, how we all fell in love Dodo! 💚

I love what @sarah_van_lingen the @dwarsvlei_guest_farm and @karoo_winter_wool_festival are doing here. Thank you Sarah, Matthew, Julia and your teams!

I love being in this wild and wonderful @capenature park. But you can't escape the evidence of our total disregard of nature. This morning I picked up two black bags of litter on one of the Atlantic beaches. I don't know how it gets onto this beach. I suspect it's washed up from the sea. #overconsumption #singleuseplastic #westcoastnationalpark
