Yuehan (Selina) Ma and Yichen (Jack) Ji created this public art project at the Manhattan Park Pool Club on Roosevelt Island, NYC. The contemporary design of this mural pays tribute to the fluidity of freedom itself, with each stroke and color choice breaking away from traditional forms. Instead of the geometries commonly found in pool design, organic shapes were used to mirror the natural paths of rivers and streams—unhindered and sovereign. The abstract motifs encircling the canvas honor the boundless sky, ever-changing clouds, and lush landscapes—elements that coexist harmoniously with water. This colorful mural on the pool deck spans over 8,000 square feet and took 42 gallons of paint and fifteen days to complete. Yichen Ji 2024 4.7 x 5.3 x 4.7 inches Adam’s Apple Mixed media Adam‘s Apple is a levitating “forbidden fruit” built from fractured circuit boards, its pulsing screen silently counting the world’s population. Liminal Lucid, presented by A Space Gallery, is a solo exhibition by Yichen Ji examining how perception transforms as natural phenomena are translated into computational form. In this exhibition, water and light shift from physical reference points to fully digital constructions, reflecting how contemporary experience is shaped as much by simulation as by direct sensory contact. Rather than framing the digital as the opposite of reality, the works approach it as a cognitive space—where vision is modeled, processed, and reorganized. As images detach from material origins and function increasingly as data structures, perception itself becomes fluid and unstable. Here, “lucidity” signals an awareness that what appears immediate may already be layered through abstraction.
