Two weeks ago I had to say goodbye to one of the most important people in my life. John Myers was my voice teacher but most importantly he was my friend and my chosen family. I am forever grateful to God for putting John in my path and am forever indebted to him for helping me build my voice. He ran a no nonsense studio but always knew what to say to ease the hardships of becoming an opera singer. He knew how to push me and also knew how to comfort me. John allowed me to freely explore my voice and my roles and greatly respected my artistic visions all whilst sharing his experiences and wisdom with me. He not only taught me about singing but built my discipline, my character, and my self-esteem.
John truly treated me as one of his own, and beyond gifting me with singing skills, he gifted me with a beautiful family who accepted me just as I am. I miss him beyond words can express. We are all still in shock and disbelief that he is no longer physically here with us. But I hear his beautiful voice and feel his love and presence everywhere. Love you Johnny! Thank you to the Illyricum Foundation and @moj_predsjednik for inviting me to perform and for creating such a beautiful and inspiring evening—one that brought together the United States, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and friends from across the Balkans.

It was a true honor to sing with the Pitesti Philharmonic Orchestra of Romania @filarmonica.pitesti , under the baton of Maestro Emir Nuhanović. To share the stage with such extraordinary musicians was a privilege I will carry with me forever.

I am also deeply grateful to our colleagues whom we had only recently met, yet who welcomed us with such warmth, generosity, and kindness. In a world that can sometimes feel divided, these moments of human connection remind us how quickly music can turn strangers into friends.

I want to thank my teacher, John Myers—not only for helping me get to this moment, but for the artistic and humanitarian vision he carried throughout his life and which he embedded into every lesson. He dreamed of a better world, one where art could transcend borders and bring people closer together.

That evening, through the power of music, we all felt that dream come alive.

I want to also thank Anne Myers for her unwavering support and strength during the days leading up to the concert. I could not have done it without her.

Thank you to all my family and friends who from afar prayed for our success and sent so much love.

I’ve been thinking a lot about new choreography for a project I’m collaborating on and it brought me back to when I created ‘Nest’ (2017) with these beautiful dancers.

It reminded me of the person I was and the grief I was experiencing after losing my grandmother to cancer. At the same time I was re-reading The Poetics of Space by Gaston Bachelard which was introduced to me by my post-modern dance professor, Leslie Satin. This masterpiece influenced my choreography and how I portrayed the loss of the structures my grandmother had built both physically and emotionally. And what that meant for my ability to imagine, or revisit memories without feeling heart wrenching pain. But, what shocked me the most even though I already knew this was a fact about the piece was the silence. The lack of music.

Now that I dedicate most of my time to learning and creating music the silence in the piece was more profound than when I was living it in the present moment. At the time, I had felt that there was no musical work that could capture the immense amount of emptiness I was feeling. And today, I experience first hand how many different composers have captured grief and sadness and anger and heartbreak. All of this is to say, how important it is to not remain in the silence forever. And to actually start listening. Making music has reminded me of the importance of community. We live in a world where music and vocals can be replicated by AI but nothing will ever replace the joy and the power of experiencing music together in space; Of singing harmonies together and getting goosebumps at the sound of an orchestra reaching its climax in the score. It is up to us to rebuild those safe spaces within ourselves and our society. Spaces that foster joy, daydreaming, imagining, singing, dancing, play, listening, understanding. This is the true power of the mind: if we can think it, then we can build it.
