At last, the first cool morning of autumn. Time to take out the old waxed Barbour, the Aquascutum mackintosh, the Carminas, and the knitwear. God, I love Paris in the fall. by @jacksonandcomag

We’re on the cusp of that exciting time in Paris when the heat gives way to crisp fall air.

The jackets, the sweaters, dressing becomes interesting again. Even white trousers are still acceptable. Dusty old Labor Day rules be damned.

So, here’s a little inspiration for dressing the part, courtesy of our dear friend Ralph. by @jacksonandcomag

Exploring the Institut de France this weekend. A palace built not for a king, but for ideas.

Born from the Enlightenment, it remains one of the great centers of intellectual life in Paris. Libraries, academies, globes, carved oak, green baize and centuries of thought collected beneath one roof.

For nearly fifty years, Tim Davis has stood behind the counter at Davis & Son @davisandson answering questions about pipes, tobacco, and a trade that has nearly disappeared.

Then, almost by accident, those same answers began reaching millions of people online.

Now a new generation is discovering pipe smoking, and Tim has found himself at the center of it.

The Art of the Tobacconist is live now.

Far from Paris for an Appalachian adventure by @jacksonandcomag

This month, the world's oldest shirtmaker was sold.

Not because it was failing. In fact, it has spent nearly two centuries making shirts for kings, presidents, businessmen, and even international Bond villains.

It is the shirt maker of some of the most interesting men in the world.

The real question is whether the mystery that made Charvet timeless can survive new ownership.

Cars today are safer, faster, and more reliable than ever before.

Yet somehow they have become less compelling.

They've traded character for convenience, buttons for touchscreens, and the sounds that once made us fall in love with driving for near silence. More and more, they feel less like machines and more like appliances.

I don't believe that's inevitable.

Whether it's a '50s Jaguar, an air-cooled 911, an Alfa Romeo, or an old MG on a winding back road, there are still cars that remind us what driving is supposed to feel like.

Machines that respond.

Machines with personality.

Machines that make you drive for no reason other than the joy of it.

Because in the end, I choose sensation over convenience.

A proper study, a window, and silence. Complete and utter silence.

It was in an old French country house in the north of France last week that I finally conquered an article I’d been putting off for months.

Why here, in a bed-and-breakfast run by a quiet Frenchman who made our breakfast every morning?

Black coffee in a silver Queen Anne pot, croissants and baguettes from the local village with Normandy butter, and ear ringing silence, save the sound of the birds, the wind in the leaves, and the horses out in the field.

Most importantly, absolutely no activities of any kind to do. Most would consider this incredibly dull. It’s not a tropical destination, and it sure isn’t an impressive château.

But it provides exactly the type of vacuum for true deep work to be done. For your mind to be free and at peace.

Here I found just enough silence to hear my own thoughts again. by @jacksonandcomag
