What shapes identity—and who gets to define it? In this week’s “The Arts Page,” we explore "48 Jews: Layers of Identity," a thought-provoking exhibition that examines the diversity within Jewish identity and challenges how we understand information in a digital world.

Through powerful visuals and personal perspectives, this story invites deeper understanding, reflection, and conversation.

surprise! I have another museum show opening next week. 48 Jews: Layers Of Identity opens next thurs, March 5. I'll be there with bells on (perhaps literally)
.
I began the 48 Jews series in graduate school back in 2006 under the guidance of Vito Acconci and Archie Rand. First exhibited @thejewishmuseum (and one of my Anne Franks still hangs in their wonderful new collection show).

The work has grown into a series of about 100 paintings exploring what it means to be Jewish. The series title is more of a question, for the series includes people who arent Jewish like Elvis (who had 4 generations of Jewish maternal descent) and Frida Kahlo (who always said she was jewish but it was cultural appropriation).

Who gets to decide culture? Who gets to label us? What does it mean to be a race/ethnicity/religion/culture?

This iteration of the show explores all that under 3 pillars: 1) the quality of paint and what representation means in portrait painting 2) the biography and history of notable Jews (and non jews) and 3) the broader diversity of the Jewish experience, from Iran to Europe to America and even China.

What was the first illustrated record album? What did Francis Bacon listen to? What were the listening habits of Georgia O'Keeffe? What does a russian bootleg of Sonic Youth have to do with Gerhard Richter?

Over 3 years of research and all will be answered and more as we learn how painting, archives, music history, and obsession with vinyl collide to create a new visual language for albums we thought we already knew.

Thanks @artspiel and @etty.yaniv for publishing this fun interview between curator Michele Jaslow @radarcurator and I. Talking about my show @manacontemporary in Jersey City.
.
We discuss my inspiration for starting the series. A rare Sonic Youth bootleg, instead of the original Gerhard Richter candle painting the Moscow bootlegger chose a generic picture of a candle for the cover. (See the picture in the slides, its pretty awesome).
.
I love the idea of an image standing in for an image standing in for a concept.
