The duo is back together and getting stoked for the @taurusmountainrace in a few weeks.

It’s been 5 years since Jay and I raced as a pair. The Silk Road Mountain Race was the last one, and I’m happy to say I’ve learned a few things since then.

I’m currently a senior in college and have been gaining more experience in racing, life, etc. I’m finally old enough to have that finish line beer everyone talks about. Although, I still haven’t had one with Jay. I vote we make the first one after our Taurus pairs win… 🍻

Jay, well, he almost didn’t make it this far… Now in his 50s and entering his 20th year of bikepacking racing, he brings wisdom and grit like no other athlete I know. His ability to problem solve, stay positive, and push through hard things is impressive. These are skills that aren’t taught but acquired through years of hard work, something I try to practice in every race.

We both have our own set of skills that we bring to the table, but we also share a lot in common. There will be plenty of sarcasm and good laughs out there. We’re also both very motivated to compete at a first year event with so many unknowns…

If it’s on my bike, I trust it. Not all gear is created equal, and not everything can handle 7 days of rain, dirt, snow, river crossings, heat, and whatever else gets thrown at it. 🤝

The time has come… it’s race week! Wednesday at 9 AM Türkiye time (1 AM MTN time), we’ll be taking on the inaugural Taurus Mountain Race.

We are beyond grateful. We recognize the work and effort it takes from the organizers to give us this opportunity. 🙏

It takes a village, and we’d like to express how thankful we are for all the support that has surrounded us and helped us get to this point.

Been a busy past couple of days… Quick trip home to pick up @jay_petervary and geek out on some bikes before flying to Turkey for @taurusmountainrace.

We just landed and got some much needed rest. Time to build up the bikes, pick up our packets, try to see some sights, and get some more sleep. I’m really excited for this one and can’t wait to get going.

The last race of the season is always hard to get motivated for, no matter how epic it is. I’m really grateful for all my friends who helped fire me up and listened to me yap and yap about this one.

The other day, I was talking to a friend about being nervous and how hard this race will be, and he simply replied, “Aren’t they all hard? Isn’t that why you do these things?” Honestly, that was a great perspective shift. Every event is unique and comes with its own challenges, and that’s what makes it fun! It’s a little puzzle to solve and a real test of your abilities.

At 15, @jacob_hora was riding his bike to school every day. At 16, he was in Kyrgyzstan racing the 12,000-mile Silk Road Mountain Race with his mentor and ultra-endurance legend Jay Petervary. A year later, he was riding solo across Armenia with a bad case of trench foot. It’s safe to say that Jacob didn’t have a standard high school experience. Now a senior at Fort Lewis College, he juggles classes with events like the Tour Divide and the Colorado Trail Race. Vapor Trail 125✅

Now that’s what I call a proper MTN bike race. One of the most fun events I’ve done. A 10 p.m. start and 14+ hours of riding is a long time to stay focused.

Right from the start, I was feeling pretty good and excited to race, but as time went on, my stomach got picky with what I was giving it. That kind of killed my motivation and spirits for a little while, but I kept thugging and enjoying my time with the other racers.

The route deserves an A+. The effort to reward ratio is great. I felt like I earned every descent and saw some great views, even though it was dark most of the time 😂. The aid station staff were another highlight so positive and efficient. Big shoutout to them!

Overall, I’m happy with what I learned out there and the result I was able to achieve. I hope to come back soon and give it another go…
