At the Igniting Hope conference, momentum to reduce health inequities continues.

This year’s conference built on last year’s efforts to set priorities and implement strategies to address inequities across WNY. 🏡

The Sept. 19 event at @jacobs_med_ub welcomed community members, leaders, activists, faculty and students.

Following a welcome from UB president Caroline Attardo Genco, PhD, discussions centered on key social determinants of health: affordable housing, access to primary care, healthy foods, workforce development, and education and literacy.

This June, a group from UB and @jacobs_med_ub traveled all the way to Jamaica to help deliver medical care. 🇯🇲

They visited Hagley Gap, a remote community in Jamaica’s Blue Mountains region, only 20 miles from Kingston, the capital. Getting to Hagley Gap means driving up narrow, unpaved, mountainous roads.

While the geography has limited care and supplies to this community, it didn’t stop the team from visiting a clinic and treating local community members with reflux, hypertension, urinary tract infections, eczema, fungal infections and other conditions.

David Holmes, MD, family medicine professor and director of global health education, helped organize the trip and assessed the clinic’s needs; priority one was getting running water.

The assessment and requests were heard — Holmes just learned that the clinic now has running water.

When His Holiness the Dalai Lama visited UB 20 years ago, it marked one of the most historic and memorable days in UB’s history. 🌏

But how did the Dalai Lama end up making such a remarkable visit to the university? So many were involved with relationship building and with planning and orchestrating the event. But the visit might never have happened without @jacobs_med_ub's Richard V. Lee, MD.

Lee, a former faculty member and physician who passed in 2013, led students on medical expeditions to remote areas of the planet, including the Tibetan colony of Ladakh. Lee helped foster medical treatment and came to know a monk who previously served on the Dalai Lama’s staff.

Their relationship resulted in Lee and others meeting the Dalai Lama in Toronto in 2004, sparking the conversation and idea for the major visit.

Compassion is at the heart of health care, but the emotional demands of continually caring for others can cause compassion fatigue. 💗

The latest episode of the UB Medicine podcast features @jacobs_Med_ub faculty Chandra Grabill, PhD, and Graham Skelhorne-Gross, MD.

They define and describe compassion fatigue while also discussing how it affects different care providers differently and talk about ways to recognize and cope with it. Building resilience and creating healthier workplace cultures are also key.

To treat pain, we have to first understand it at the molecular level. ⚛️

Now, Feng Qin, PhD, and other @jacobs_med_ub researchers are working to investigate the molecular structure of a key pain receptor with a new $2.2 million @nihgov grant.

Qin, who's professor of physiology and biophysics, has long studied TRPV1, a protein receptor found on peripheral nerves that's activated when unfolded.

Yet TRPV1’s unfolded activated state persists only for milliseconds, making it difficult to study. Qin and his colleagues are harnessing new tools and methods to rapidly heat and then immediately freeze the receptor, trapping its transient state, before studying it under a cryo-electron microscope. 🔬

By studying the receptor's atomic formation, the researchers hope to uncover molecular targets applicable to new pain therapies.
