I had the opportunity to visit the H.E.A.R.T.S (Helping Each Adolescent Reach Their Spark) Program yesterday and learn about the important work they are doing to help support teen mothers through pregnancy, birth and parenting while also staying in school and achieving their life goals 🌟. Beautiful day for DCLT (Durham Community Land Trustees) and Jubilee Home block parties- two organizations who do so much to create places people can call home in our community! Congratulations to DCLT on your 50 year anniversary and a debt free headquarters! Congratulations to Jubilee Home for growing your housing options, for justice involved residents-including a new house for women- needing support as they transition back into our community! I also learned about DCIA (Durham Congregations in Action) HOMEShare Durham program that matches people looking for affordable housing with homeowners interested in renting out a room and the Duke HomeGrown Fellows Program supporting organizations focused on economic mobility (application deadline is October 13)! More inspiration from Toronto where the Ontario Government is investing $70 B in transit expansion-the largest of its kind in North America and the Canadian Government in partnership with the City of Toronto is investing $2.7 B over the next 3years in 18 Housing Programs creating 5,600 rental units, including affordable and supportive housing!!! Check out the way historic facades and low density historic ground floor retail is preserved and integrated into high density towers. 1% of the capital budget of all new projects is dedicated to public spaces and public art. We can learn from the built infrastructure happening in Toronto that is being made possible in tandem with intensive transit investments and creating a built environment where people are thriving and building community. MPact Transit + Community Conference in Toronto!!! I have been learning so much here in the fastest growing city in North America!!!! Great mobile workshops including a glimpse of the Ontario line under construction which will move more than 400,000 people a day. The Toronto transit system moves more than 3 million a day right now- the 3rd largest system after New York City and Mexico City. I am blown away by this livable, walkable, bike able, transit focused city that prioritizes public spaces, public art, investing in Transit Oriented COMPLETE Communities and is building thousands and thousands of units of high density housing, including affordable housing. 400 people a day are moving to this city where 121 languages are spoken and immigrants from all over the world make up 50% of the population. The city of Toronto has four main goals: Affordable Housing, Investing in Neighborhoods, Climate Change Resilience and Get Torontonians Moving! The public and private sector are working together to achieve these goals. We have so much to learn from Toronto and Canada!!!! @durhamcountygov by @jacobsfordurham

Highlight of day two of our NCACC Conference- helping lead a mobile tour of our Durham County Affordable Housing Projects at 300 and 500 East Main Street!!! It was exciting to share our model and lessons learned with county commissioners from across the state who are trying to build affordable housing in their communities 🌟 Plus a packed and informative session on Data Centers with expertise from UNC School of Government and inspiring keynote by NC “Farmer Brown”, former professional football player Jason Brown! @durhamcountygov @ncacc1908 by @jacobsfordurham

A phenomenal first day of the 119th NCACC Annual Conference happening in Durham! Great to reconnect with colleagues from across the state! Attended excellent sessions learning about innovations in trauma informed county workplaces and care for people suffering from mental illness cycling through our jails. Thank you to NC Cooperative Extension and all the incredible Cooperative Extension staff for hosting an engaging resource focused reception and delicious dinner highlighting fresh food from local farmers throughout North Carolina!!! @durhamcountygov @NCACC119 by @jacobsfordurham
