To say this hasn’t been the easiest of weeks would be an understatement, but these two definitely know how to pick a guy up and make him feel special for Father’s Day with a trip to the brewery, my favorite breakfast, and the best candy of all time. I hope all the Dads out there had as nice of one as I did… #happyfathersday by @jacobsrunninggingerly

What a great weekend spending a couple days on the trails. I’d be lying if I said there weren’t times in the last couple months I worried I might not get to do this again. And while I’ve still got work to do to get completely healthy, I’m just grateful to be blessed to be able to be out running with the Captain and my friends again in warm weather in the woods.. taken in Red River Gorge Geological Area by @jacobsrunninggingerly

Happy Birthday Captain Jack. I can’t believe you’re already 2. When I said I wanted a Boykin Spaniel puppy to add to our growing household of animals, I had lot of people tell me it was probably a bad idea. But I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. There are days when I really believe a higher power sent you to me, the calm to my storm, a true testament of unconditional calming affection (even if that manifests in waiting for me at the bathroom door some days 😂) No matter how rough it gets for me you’re always there. And you’re definitely nuts some days but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Love you buddy, here’s to many more years.. #mylittlepirate☠️ #boykinsofinstagram🐾 by @jacobsrunninggingerly

“No matter how bad things are going, smiling always helps” @cameronrhanes

I’m often asked how I could have fun and be happy while being miserable and in pain running these races. I’m reminded of another quote I say everyday training and doing these things..

“Make friends with pain, and you’ll never be alone..”

That and have really good photographers to make you laugh and look good through it..😂😂

It’s been a rough year for me physically. I had surgery in April, I was told I’d be running in 4 weeks. It took almost 3 months, and if I’m being honest, I still have issues. I was told in the summer by another Dr, I should consider foot surgery that would keep me from walking for 3 months. When I told him I couldn’t do that and I had a race to run and just needed something to manage symptoms he said “sometimes we don’t get what we want”. I stood politely from the chair, thanked him for his time and said “watch me” as I walked out.

I hired a coach, and god bless her, she was the most understanding and helpful person, @lauren_runswild is the best there is in my opinion, and we worked hard to find ways to keep my knee healthy and be prepared for the race without the constant pounding of miles. I had the best PT, @markelkin is the absolute man. And the
best support system with my wife and best friends @mamaselahmander and @nicolerunslong (and @mother_runner_micki and @adelau6 yelling at me to come 🤣)

And then bad luck happened again. About a month ago, I was told there was a shot I could rupture my Achilles because of overuse compensating for the knee pain and I should consider putting it off. But there’s one common denominator with me, I don’t quit things. Even with a high probability of failure, I had to lace them up and go. I’ve said for 2 years I’m running 100 miles, and hell or high water I was gonna try.

The race actually started off fine, but about 12 miles in I knew something was off. My knee (the non surgical one ironically) was getting sore each mile. The pain continued, but I pushed through. I actually felt ok and was able to run/walk a pretty decent pace, but coming into the halfway point, the wheels fell off. I was in ALOT of pain, my knee was swollen, and at that point I knew I needed to stop and take the 50 mile finish. It took me 2 hours to get the last 5 miles. So I failed, but life’s about failures. And I had a blast going to war with these fellow runners.

So will I quit now? NO WAY. See you next year @tunnelhill100 I’m conquering that 100 eventually. Because if you’re willing to fail and fail and fail..sooner or later you’ll win. taken in Tunnel Hill 100/50 mile runs by @jacobsrunninggingerly
