Some @woordfees moments. @fire.water.fire was out there observing. Meeting @friedavdheever was a soul treat. Did some great @taalgenootklankbaan recordings during the @woordfees, including a majestic chat with @toastcards. @jerome_rex demonstrating the glory of a great backyard. Look out for an epic @taalgenootklankbaan episode with Mr. Rex. @wolenhare and I had the best chat with @william_welfare in Durbanville, launching it as a collab podcast ep soon. The Lloyd Ross showcase at the @woordfees Film Festival was a special thing, ending with two great films (both involving Rian Malan), and a live Q&A. Lloyd Ross and Rian Malan chatting about films and music and South Africa. Got to witness @locally_yellow_rsa’s first ever live DJ set at @aandklasstellenbosch for the @klyntji Klub gig, magic. Thank you @kultuurwyfie for all the dogs! Caught one song of Buurvrou’s set, and what a song to catch! Watching @toastcards & @magetroskie in an @altramalband moshpit was a festival highlight. @dierbaar_band helping everyone to gly. What a joy to have an impromptu Die Skynmaagde moment at the end of @diehotelhenry’s set. Art guys. Great Q&A with @aryankrugerthing after the epic screening of Street Trash. ALSO. A collaborative album by Jaco van der Merwe (@jacofundermerwe), FRNGE (@unclefrnge) and trxstxssx (@imtrxstxssx). Between 2014 and 2016, Jaco wrote a series of poems, each beginning with the word “Also”. These poems were eventually collected and published as a book in 2020. What began as conversations about accompanying the poetry with music gradually evolved into something sentimental for all three of us. Created in waves over five years, ALSO is a 17-track exploration of spoken word, experimental sound and atmosphere. Artwork by Kyle Kemink (@kem.inc) , who also designed the original book. Released through Chamber Collective (@chamber.core) & Wêreld (@wereld_sa) Available now on all major streaming platforms, and available to purchase on Bandcamp. A reading and discussion of the art work That Which Is Inside (Dit wat binne is) by photographer Wikus de Wet and lyricist Jaco van der Merwe (from the band Bittereinder). This work is part of the group exhibition “WE ARE THE GOOD GUYS” an urgent group exhibition at the historic New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. - a critical visual response to the politicisation of grief and the promotion of segregationist agendas. The exhibition brings together intergenerational artistic perspectives, with a majority of its participants self-identifying as Afrikaners. “As an Afrikaner, I recognise both the pain experienced by survivors of farm attacks and the daily violence and inequality faced by all South Africans - most of whom are not white. Also, I reject the notion that self‐determination or other separatist ideas offer viable solutions. I believe art can dismantle hierarchies of grief and help restore visibility to all the interwoven lives of our shared society.” - Johan Louw Stegmann, Curator "Afrikaners”, or Afrikaans speaking white South Africans, is a far more diverse group of people than commonly understood (not to mention their language belongs to a majority of non-white speakers). This group exhibition seeks to clarify the reality of the relationship of Afrikaners to their home country of South Africa and subsequently challenges politicised narratives promoted by movements like the White Cross Project on the lawn of the National Mall in Washington D.C. "WE ARE THE GOOD GUYS" encourages a wider conversation and draws on South Africa’s long history of artists confronting stereotypes, oppression, violence and injustice.
