Thoughts/notes/rambles... lessons learned?
- embrace line, repetition, and labor to transform materials...
be slow;
repetitive, and ritualistic
perform gestures in a state of intense concentration.
- potential, transformation
- portals are important -- the search, the desire to find, a pathway into another realm
~
reductive geometric shapes..circles, triangles induce a heightened state of awareness (ideally)....sometimes? life/death cycles, perfection, beauty... free me from the boundaries of ordinary time;
Circle: wheel, passage of time, constructed from an unbroken line that contains space inside & outside
~
- contemplative memorials?
- Grottoes? Altars? shrines? to the calm? Altars to rest? Abstract sanctuary?
- color, material, and use of repetition reference the mental and physical spaces where ritual acts can occur... beyond the boundaries of language -- accumulations of energy through the touch of the human hand, timelessness, sense of eternity -- no beginning, no ending
- flux of rhythm and energy ... works as conductors, conduits
- monolithic
- self as a secret entity

Some new work and some recent thoughts~

The window hasn’t changed. But the view I thought I knew by heart certainly has.

A familiar landscape turns strange. Has the world changed, or just the way I see it?

Perhaps transformation begins when I can’t quite tell the difference. A shift in light or attention reveals something I hadn’t noticed before... Something that was there all along. A crack, a break, and now? a revelation✨🌱
Sweet, sweet divine disclosure~

I’ve been thinking about little worlds, windows, portals 🌸🌱🪢

Dearly beloved, we gather here to say our goodbyes…

to one very sweet, very joyous summer.

here she lies.

and to her we raise our glass: to days of inspiration, making something out of nothing, going against the grain, going a little insane. And most definitely going mad. taken in Chicago, Illinois by @jacquelinesurdell

My Kaleidoscopic View, 2025
Nylon cord, cotton cord, polyester fabric, steel
73 × 73 × 15 in.

Lately I’ve been thinking about all the iterations behind finished works. Every piece carries traces of earlier ideas, fragments of older works, material experiments, and evolving ways of seeing. This one reminds me that making is rarely linear, and that both joy and frustration are part of the work✨😮‍💨🤬🔨💔🕸️💓💚 taken in Chicago, Illinois by @jacquelinesurdell

Congratulations to artist Jacqueline (Jax) Surdell (@jacquelinesurdell) on her acceptance to the Silver Art Projects Residency (@silverartprojects) in New York!

Working primarily with industrial rope, Surdell creates landscape-inspired works that draw from ecological networks, transportation routes, waterways, maps, and shifting terrains. Her practice explores the relationships between natural systems and civic infrastructure, considering how movement, labor, and place shape our understanding of connection and belonging.

We know this next year on the East Coast is going to be a major one and we’re excited to be a part of this next chapter! 🏄

Congratulations again, Jax! by @jacquelinesurdell
