This weekend, CXW—Chicago Exhibition Weekend—a City-wide, 3-day “Open House” encouraged art lovers with an amazing opportunity to explore neighborhoods North, South, East and West to visit galleries, museums, artist spaces, and historic buildings and locations! The MID COAST’s vibrant arts community is bursting with talent, beauty and ideas that need to be seen and experienced. For several hours on Saturday, enjoyed the company of the fabulous @aprilbehnke and also, being introduced to @curtisanthonybozif! Huge congratulations to Secrist | Beach, Corbett vs. Dempsey, PATRON, Volume, and Western Exhibitions and their artists for once again causing me to utter “ARTASTIC”!!!! P.S. This is Part 1….it may only have been several hours, but we packed in as much as possible—Part 2 to come! Very sad to miss having the additional days—maybe next time! Meanwhile, what a wonderful mid point lead-up EXPO CHICAGO and welcome for the Fall Art season! @gertie.chicago truly produced a winning program! YYYEEESSS!!! ❤️💨🌃🎨⭐️🔥👏🍀🙏🏻🔴

Artist Spotlight on @jacquelinesurdell in our Genoa collection.

FC: What got you to the decision to choose being an artist over working a normal job?

JS: I thought we were all gonna die in Covid. The second time that they extended the stay at home was called social distance whatever and I decided that if I could contribute anything, it would be this and it’s really the only thing I’ve ever been good at and I was fighting it, and then this feeling of mortality brought me to the reality of who I’m supposed to be.

FC: do you feel it’s better to explain your art or do you think that your art should be explained?

JS: I think because I love art history I’ve always thought history is just gossip in my opinion and like storytelling and so I think there is opportunity for connection through storytelling but in a lot of ways I also want the work to speak for itself, and in many ways, it does. like it has its own personality, and I can pontificate as much as I want on what the ideas were going into it, but then the actual piece has its own personality.

FC: culturally what has your art brought into your world?

JS: 2017 when I graduated from grad school, I wrote in my passion planner that I want to travel internationally and meet all different kinds of people and be connected through my work. I don’t know if I actually thought it was through my work at the time, but my work has provided me with these opportunities to meet and work with all different kinds of people all over the world, it’s been such a pleasure and helps me bridge gaps. I feel like it helps my insecure personality by Sometimes causing forced social interaction that I know I need and really appreciate and joy.

From diving into @jacquelinesurdell’s dynamic artistic practice to vibing along with @hxltmusic’s laid-back DJ set, the afternoon was filled with creativity, connection, and community.

My curatorial ode to THE ANNI ALBERS

Her Tate Modern show in 2018 was the first Museum show to really move me to tears, not like leak but sob. There is looking at art and then there is LOOKING at art, Anni Albers took my eyeballs & already deep love for art to a new overwhelming echelon

Congratulations to Jacqueline Surdell (@jacquelinesurdell) for winning The Hopper Prize!

As the jury notes, “This group of artists make work that exemplifies conceptual rigor, a command of their chosen media, and an unwavering commitment to a sustained creative practice in the face of increasingly challenging times.”

We’re celebrating by taking a look back at Surdell’s Lil Bebs, assembled through woven cotton and nylon cord, and steel. Merging the precision of craft with the gestural spontaneity of painting, these works articulate “the devilish details, the intimate moments, the micro-movements that prove the most challenging,” Surdell writes.
