"The Reading"
Oil on linen
110cm x 90cm
My final project at The Florence Academy of Art, painted over five weeks from life.

While I have spoken before about the cards laid out on the table - The Fool, The Queen of Swords and The Magician - I intentionally left the last card hidden, so you the viewer can insert any card they like into her hand.

On reflection, after drawing this chapter of my life to a close and before stepping out into a new year, I'd like for that last card to be The World.

What do you hope for yourself in 2026?

"Ndikuxolele" (forgive me /I forgive you)
oil on linen
40cm x 30cm

This is a deeply personal still life, and my last painting at The Florence Academy of Art. It features a cast by Gemito of "il Malatiello" (the sick boy), nestled against Protea flowers. Proteas are the national symbol of South Africa and the king of Fynbos, Capensis, the smallest of only six floral kingdoms in the world, and endemic only to The Western Cape of South Africa. The boy is wrapped in raw linen, used both for treating wounds and painting on.

This work can be interpreted in a personal manner, with the boy representing the inner child, or in a broader context relating to South Africa, where the cast's whiteness and the work's title take on new meaning. I would have been a similar age to this boy when apartheid ended in 1994.

The thing I love about South Africa is how crazily diverse it is. This is the West Coast National Park, a short drive away from Cape Town, famous for its stunning Namaqualand flowers. Every year I mean to go and paint them but I’ve missed their brief window every time.

Every year since I can remember, nasturtium would grow in this exact spot for a few months around spring. They are not native to SA but it feels like it. This quiet spot is also the perfect place to train Freya to stay in her spot while I work.

Work in progress: my large painting of Camps Bay Tidal Pool. I really need a better portable easel for these large paintings - let me know if you have any ideas!

What a day! I got to paint alongside my former drawing instructor @simoneoliviamoritz at Kirstenbosch Gardens and then went on to adopted my little pup from the SPCA! She's the cutest little Border Collie cross Afticanis with a ridgeback (like my old dog Ruby had).

Painting outdoors is difficult, so I've set about creating a workshop that will give you the skills and confidence you need to take your easel outside. Beginners can be overwhelmed with the sheer amount of information in nature, so I will teach you how to make sense of it, laying out a strategy that will help organise and interpret the noise. I will also talk about composition in length, helping you with that first crucial step of choosing what to paint. Lastly, I will also share a few of my favorite unusual colour combinations that I use to capture the distinct hues of the Cape Landscape.

Head to @thedeckleedge to book your slot. Places are limited
Friday 25th: full day including demo
Saturday 26th: half day making your own landscape.

I was older than I care to admit when I finally realised that Bloubergstrand gets it name from the blue colour of Table Mountain across the bay, and not because its so windy here.

If you know the history of these two Lions that look toward the mountain, please let me know!

AI is the new photorealism - or at least they both fill me with the same sinking disappointment when I find out a work is made by AI or a copy of a photo. Anyone else out there feel the same?
