Genuinely, when you build something with heart and soul - your patients can tell.

To my practitioners: patients want this. You make the choice to what they have access to and I promise you - creating quality work will create the most lasting for filling connections you have with your patients.

To my techs: Invest in the good products and let yourself evolve and grow. Create magic. You are the artist that will be in every smile, bite, and word of someone's life. It's intimate and beautiful.

To me, there is a difference between a "premium" denture and an "artisan" denture. Aside from all the technical aspects, measurements, superior products lies a fine line between the two.

Artisan work breathes life. It has a piece of the maker that is an incalculable quality to it. There is devotion and love painted into each glaze line, each layer from the inside out. Every detail intentionally adorned to create the dimension of a smile.

I encourage everyone to try this. It is so immensely vulnerable. I always think to myself how vulnerable our patients are: the secrets they share with me, the hardships, losses, pain, things they have maybe never told anyone else (or felt they could), I feel the best way to show someone you care is to listen to them. Deeply. I often sit with my patients and let their stories soak in deeply. This is what drives me to put that time and care into what I do.

I try my best to do my patients justice by building something that can make them feel whole again.

This is my process as an artist in this field. It is one way - and for me it has been the most authentic way. Yet, I encourage you to explore some of my methods.

To slow down and listen. To take more time and care. Sometimes the dentures isn't the driving force of success - sometimes I believe it is just showing people you care about them.

Two things come to mind with this picture:
1.) what they teach in school is a starting point to grow from - don’t be afraid to experiment and make your own style.
2.) the only person you should compare yourself to is yourself. Keep your eyes on your own work and let yourself be inspired by others without ego.

The gingiva is a give away for most patients that they are wearing a denture. A big laugh, smiling too much, or even just poorly designed work can make our patients feel self conscious.

I was taught that this is why we have the high lip line - it is to make sure we can just fill it all up with teeth without bating an eye. Longer teeth make it so the acrylic work stays covered.

I’m here thinking: gums / gingiva are the new prosthetic fashion statement to realism and patient confidence. We owe it to our patients to learn how to sculpt / layer these materials to create more lifelike prosthetics.

Cheers to six years of growth between these two dentures - I think you can see the many unseen hours of hard work learning and leveling up my skills.

Clinical tip:

Picking up housings is a dance that is easy once you get into the swing of things. There are many different ways to do similar things - and the way I like to pick up housings has come with the refinement of over a decade of both making / delivering these dentures.

The tip:
Make sure you use your acrylic both inside the void you’ve made in the denture AND on the housings in the mouth. This way you know for sure that there won’t be any voids around the housing, you’ve put the material in all the retention grooves, and that it’s not going to move once it’s placed.

You can always add more composite around the housing after, but it’s nearly impossible to add more under the housing 😅.

Classic: my patient came to me after having some work done in an “in-n-out” clinic in Mexico.

After assessing his case, we made the call to move him to over dentures and he absolutely loves the results 🤍.

JADE CONNORS - Redefining Denture Care
Last year at an international denturist conference in Las Vegas, Jade Connors asked a simple question: How long are your patient consultations? Many said 15 minutes. Connors spends upwards of an hour with patients at Pearl Denture and Implant Centre, founded almost 10 years ago.
Operating from the perspective that losing one’s teeth is akin to losing a limb, patients should feel supported with trauma-conscious communication.
Connors calls their approach “slow dentistry” — recognizing the importance of taking time with both consultation and denture-making. “I literally watch people let themselves rot, rather than address the issue, because they’re so scared they’re going to be judged when they reach our office. We need to change that.”
Slow dentistry also means being detail-oriented with prosthetics. “I take the time to draw in little veins. I’m currently trying to build my skills on perfectly matching gum shapes and skin tones,” says Connors, who has an art and design background.
This year, their “artisan dentures” won first prize at the KunstZahnWerk Award at the 2025 International Dental Show in Germany — attended by more than 100,000 people. Connors is the first Canadian to ever receive the top prize.
They share their knowledge through instructional videos and soon books targeting patients, peers and would-be denturists. “There’s a lot of advocacy and changes that need to be made, and I’m hoping I can be a part of that wave.”
