Mumma

My new name.
Given to me as I crossed the threshold into this new life,
this new way of being.
Present.

A name not yet spoken so sweetly by my new babe,
though she knew instantly who I was.

Mumma

A name I now know holds many roles —
teacher, caretaker, entertainer, friend, and so much more.

A name that was born when she was.
So divine. So ordinary. Both.

Mumma

A name that looks into her eyes and knows
she is experiencing the same awareness as I —

the essence from which everything arises.

A name that knows she will be my greatest teacher.
She has already shown me the way
into depth and intimacy through the smallest, simplest truth:
love above all.

Mumma
A name spoken to generations of women before me
and to generations still to come
Probably to the end of time.

A name — and a title — of the warrior goddess
I have evolved into.
A recognition of each mother who makes the leap.
I truly, truly bow to you all.

These words came to me at 3am last night
as I rocked my babe to sleep,
knowing there were many, many mummas
in the exact same position
at the exact same time.
