Some places are visited. Yungang is felt.

Carved into the cliffs near Datong more than 1,500 years ago, the Yungang Grottoes (云冈石窟) contain hundreds of caves and niches filled with thousands of Buddhist statues.

Created during the Northern Wei dynasty, the sculptures bring together artistic influences from China, Central Asia and South Asia. Look closely and every expression, fold of clothing and mark in the stone reveals another layer of history.

Standing beneath these monumental figures, fifteen centuries suddenly feel very close.

This isn’t Paris or Milan.
It’s a runway through the rice fields of Yuexi County, Sichuan. 🌾
Filmed during the Yi Torch Festival celebrations in Yuexi County (越西县), part of Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture (凉山彝族自治州). Liangshan is China’s largest concentrated Yi-inhabited area, and the Torch Festival is one of the most important gatherings in Yi cultural life.
Fire here is more than a spectacle. It carries ideas of light, harvest, ancestral memory and community. Across Liangshan, celebrations may include torch-lighting, singing, dancing, traditional sports, attire displays and gatherings that bring entire communities together.
This particular show blends Yi-inspired embroidery, silver ornament, sculptural headwear and traditional silhouettes with contemporary fashion. It isn’t one standard “traditional costume”—Yi clothing varies between communities, and this runway shows how a living culture can continue to evolve.
Behind these clothes are the mountains and fields of Yuexi, generations of craftsmanship, and young designers finding new ways to carry their heritage forward.
Would you travel to Liangshan for the Torch Festival?

This place looks like Mars… but it’s actually in China.

Hidden deep in Xinjiang, the Hami Grand Sea Road feels like another planet — endless desert, alien-shaped rocks, and silence that makes the landscape feel unreal.

Would you drive through a place like this?

There aren’t many ways left to enter Tibet that still make you feel every single kilometer.

Some come by car. Some ride motorcycles or bicycles. Some walk.
And some simply keep moving forward in whatever way they can.

This is G318 — China National Highway 318, one of the most iconic overland routes into Tibet and a road that countless travelers cross on their way to the Tibetan Plateau.

To understand why this road means so much, you have to understand what Tibet represents to many people in China.

Tibet is a sacred land deeply connected with Tibetan Buddhism. But in the wider Chinese imagination, a journey to Tibet has also come to mean something more personal: distance, freedom, endurance, escape, pilgrimage, and the courage to leave ordinary life behind for a while.

People often say they are “going to Tibet.”But sometimes, what they are really doing is going to find out how they want to live.Because life can quietly become a collection of routines — work, responsibilities, plans, expectations.

Then one day, you see someone crossing the mountains with everything they need tied behind them.

And you remember:The world is still enormous. You are still alive. You are still free to leave.Maybe that is why people keep coming to this road. Not because the journey is easy. But because we only get one life — and sometimes, the meaning of freedom is simply having the courage to begin.

Snow has arrived in Ngari, Tibet. ❄️🏔️
At more than 4,000 meters above sea level, the vast landscapes of western Tibet can change almost overnight. Golden grasslands, distant mountains and Tibetan antelopes suddenly surrounded by fresh snow — this is autumn in Ngari.
One of the wildest and most remote landscapes in China.
Would you travel this far for a view like this?

Autumn in China looks like this. 🍂🏔️
Snow-covered peaks, golden forests, quiet streams and wildlife crossing the grasslands.
This is Daocheng Yading 稻城亚丁, deep in western Sichuan — a completely different side of China from the cities most travelers know.
If you want mountain scenery, crisp autumn colors and landscapes that feel almost unreal, put this place on your China list.
Would you visit Daocheng Yading in autumn?

Where should you stay in Hong Kong? 🇭🇰
The best hotel isn’t always the best hotel for your trip.
For a first visit, Tsim Sha Tsui is one of the easiest bases for Victoria Harbour, the Star Ferry, museums and shopping. Choose Central / Sheung Wan for restaurants, historic streets and Hong Kong Island evenings, or West Kowloon if Airport Express access, museums and high-rise hotels matter more.
A few things I’d always check before booking in Hong Kong:
Room size can vary dramatically.
“City view”, “partial harbour view” and “harbour view” are different room categories.
The nearest MTR station doesn’t always mean a short walk from the correct exit.
And in compact rooms, bathroom privacy is worth checking too.
This guide compares neighbourhoods, good-value stays, harbour hotels, luxury options and practical booking details.
Save this for your Hong Kong trip.

Where should you stay in Xi’an? 🏮
For a first trip, choosing the right area matters more than choosing the fanciest hotel.
Bell Tower / Muslim Quarter is the easiest starting point for food, metro connections and the historic centre.
Choose South Gate / Yongningmen if city-wall walks, cafés and photography matter more.
Stay around Big Wild Goose Pagoda / Grand Tang Mall for culture, evening walks and Xi’an’s night scenery, while Qujiang suits a slower, more hotel-focused stay.
And one question comes up a lot: Should you stay near the Terracotta Warriors?
For most first-time visitors, probably not. Central Xi’an usually works better as your main base, with Lintong visited as a day trip.
Before booking, check the actual metro walk, room orientation, Chinese hotel name, room size, breakfast and cancellation terms.
I’ve compared the main areas and different hotel styles in the full Xi’an accommodation guide.

Maybe the autumn of life isn’t about things fading.

Maybe it’s the season when you finally learn to slow down, let go of what doesn’t matter, and notice the quiet beauty that was always there.

By Erhai Lake in Dali (大理洱海), the wind moves softly across the water, the mountains stay still in the distance, and for a moment, nothing needs to have a purpose.

Some seasons are meant to be lived, not explained. 🍂

Where should you stay in Hangzhou? 🌿
The answer depends less on the “best hotel” and more on which part of the city fits your trip.
For a first visit, Hubin / West Lake East is the easiest base for lake walks, restaurants and shopping.
Choose Hefang Street for historic lanes and an old-town atmosphere, or head west toward Lingyin for gardens, temples and a slower stay.
If the hotel itself is part of the experience, Hangzhou also has some beautiful options around West Lake — from Four Seasons and West Lake State Guesthouse to Zhejiang Xizi and smaller boutique stays such as ANYU.
One thing I’d always check before booking: “West Lake” in the hotel name doesn’t necessarily mean the hotel is directly on the lake. Check the exact address, room category and view.
I put together a full area-by-area guide with 12 hotel picks, hostels and practical booking notes on Glimpse China.

Some roads don’t lead you to a destination.
They lead you back to yourself.
Maybe life isn’t about having everything figured out.
Maybe it’s just about choosing a direction, moving forward, and trusting that the road will make sense later.
Somewhere between the silence, the wind, and an empty road,
you remember how little you actually need to feel free.
This is Dahai Dao, Hami, Xinjiang, China —
an ancient route cutting through one of the wildest landscapes in western China.
Sometimes, the best part of travel isn’t discovering a new place.
It’s discovering a different version of yourself.
