Another Throwback Friday and today we’re going to talk about The Fifth Season. We were so incredibly proud to be able to work on this series with Jemisin and on the rest of The Broken Earth Trilogy, wanting to create something super special. After all, N.K. Jemisin is the only person to win the Hugo Award for each book in a trilogy three years in a row!

The incredible John Anthony Di Giovanni @jadillustrated illustrated this for us, with 10 full colour images and also the incredible dustjacket (only with the standard edition) featuring Essun and Tonkee first arriving at Castrima-Under, the town carved from a Geode. The standard edition shown here is quarter-bound in marbled cloth by Freya Scott of Paperwilds with boards covered in cream paper and stamped in two colours. The slipcase is covered in purple buckram cloth for durability and stamped once with gold foil.

The book is printed on Munken Rough Cream 120gsm by Nomad Letterpress of Cheltenham and signed by both Author and Artist.

One of the most exciting aspects of making these #finepress editions is getting to work with incredible artists, and trying to stuff as much into each edition as possible.

I’ve always been an advocate of trying to get the best possible people on the perfect project, even if it means having to wait. John Anthony di Giovanni is an incredible and versatile artist who is very much in demand and after his work on TFS, there was no question who it had to be.

John is providing 10 full colour illustrations for The Obelisk Gate. 2 Landscape pieces, (Dustjacket and Endpaper) and 8 interior portrait paintings tipped in the book.
John is an American fantasy artist celebrated for his richly detailed illustrations that bring mythical worlds and heroic characters to life.

Growing up with a passion for storytelling and illustration, Di Giovanni immersed himself in the world of fantasy and science fiction from a young age, inspired by epic tales and classic mythology.

Here are a couple of pieces from #TheFifthSeason that we haven't shared on Insta before to whet your appetites for what we have in store for #TheObeliskGate. You can't rush art! So we wait patiently to share more when we can, keeping a few surprises for when you finally get the books in hand.

“If she hurts him because she loves him, is that still hurt? If she hurts him a lot now so that he will hurt less later, does that make her a terrible person? Is that not how love should work?”
#NKJemisin #TheObeliskGate

We’re pleased to reveal the wraparound dustjacket art (exclusive to the Standard Edition) of The Obelisk Gate! An incredible follow up to the brilliant dustjacket on TFS and will be printed on high quality paper and foil stamped on the spine with Title/Author/Series. John Anthony di Giovanni is an incredible and versatile artist who is very much in demand and after his work on TFS, there was no question we had to have him lend his talents once again.

Can you spot the little easter eggs hidden in plain sight? Do comment with your insights and theories! We got to pour a lot of time and effort into this piece, and are absolutely delighted with the result.

This awesome #coverart depicts Castrima-under, the huge geode where a comm lives. It was a serious undertaking for #johnanthonydigiovanni as multiple crystal surfaces cause issues when getting the lighting right. But of course, John smashed it and who doesn’t love purple right?

There are still a few #FifthSeason art prints available for sale. Priced the same as our previous #ArtPrint at £110 plus shipping.

There are 75 signed and numbered prints sized at 16inches x 20inches (I used an American printer…) in total and have been giclee printed on 310gsm Hahnemuhle Cotton Rag. The paper is incredible and so strong and will last the test of time.
