In four months, I’ll be 50. FIFTY! And lately, I’ve been reflecting on where I’ve been, where I am, and where I’m headed. I keep going back to ShoeGangsta. Back in 2009, before Instagram took over, I launched a TypePad blog dedicated to my obsession with shoes, my style ‘conquests’, and finds from my travels through Europe, Asia, and across the U.S. It was a passion project, and I went ALL IN. With my hubby’s full support, I invested in photography, hair and makeup artists, and even curated the blog's music. I had a vision, and I was so proud of it. The love and support came immediately, but so did the haters. Not everyone cheered. Some showed their true colors, while others were already mastering the art of hiding behind a screen. Instead of recognizing I might be onto something, I let their negativity get in my head. I took the blog down. Looking back, those first signs of hate may have been the first signs that I was onto something! I wish I had been the woman that I am today, because the number of fucks I don’t give these days is PLENTIFUL! 😂 But I still wonder… where could ShoeGangsta have taken me? My love for style never left, and neither did my obsession with shoes. ShoeGangsta still lives in me, just older, grayer, and far more fearless. And I KNOW some of you original fans are still out there. All three of you! 😂❤️ So to anyone who’s 32, younger, older, or anywhere in between, here’s what I’ve learned 17 years later: NEVER let someone’s opinion, criticism, or inability to see your vision make you abandon something you believe in. I believed in ShoeGangsta, but I let other voices drown out my own. Trust yourself. Embrace the discomfort. Keep going. And when the haters come? QUE SE JODAN.

My mom used to call me a bruja. Pero me decía ‘witch’… No se porque, because yo soy la más santita. 😇😂

Wearing my BRUJA crewneck, online this week, with 4-camo shorts I rescued from my husband’s giveaway pile. He now wants them back. Mira coño… once it hits the giveaway pile, all sales are final. 😂

Some things get better with age.

Being married to a denim designer has taught me so much about appreciating the details, the sun fades, the repairs, the natural wear and all the little things that tell you a garment has lived a life.

And sometimes I get lucky enough to score from Donwan’s collection. 😂 These Point House overalls are deadstock from the 1950s, never worn!!! So this time, instead of inheriting someone else’s fades and wear, I get to create my own.

Deadstock Point House overalls - circa 1950s
Vintage Lee denim jacket - late ’60s/early ’70s (Sun-Kissed)
Vintage AC/DC tee
Old-school Chucks
Gold Hoops - Power Hoops ✨
Red Bembes (lips) 💋
And naturally… the grey hair 🩶🤍

Yesterday, somewhere in the middle of working a show in New Britain, CT, my phone alerts reminded me it was our anniversary😂. 24 years ago, Donwan and I got married in Vegas after working a trade show. We had already been together four years, had one son, and another one in the oven, although at barely a month pregnant, there wasn’t much to see yet. That was us. And honestly, that’s still us! We’ve always moved to the beat of our own drum. There was no big production. We were working, hustling, building a life and a family together, and somewhere in the middle of all of that, we went and got married in Vegas.

And yesterday, 28 years together and 24 years married, there we were again. Working a show together. Setting up, selling, packing up, hustling. Still building. Still figuring shit out. Still side by side. In 28 years there have been babies, businesses, wins, losses, pivots, some really beautiful years and some really fucking hard ones. We’ve grown up together. We’ve changed. Life has changed. But through every version of our lives, there has always been us. So maybe it’s actually perfect that we spent our 24th anniversary working together. It’s kind of how this whole thing started. ❤️

28 years together. 24 married. Still moving to the beat of our own drum. Happy Anniversary to my baby daddy, @kingkrash ✨ by @jahayraharrell

When 9 to 5 came out in 1980, I was four years old, and I seriously thought I had a 9 to 5 because I walked around BELTING that song. 😂 I watched that movie obsessively, and looking back, maybe some of the earliest seeds of the feminist in me were planted right there. Lil Jaha LOVED watching those women turn the tables on a boss who demeaned and mistreated them. As I got older, I realized there was so much more to Dolly. That voice. Her kindness. And MY GOD, Dolly was gorgeous inside and out. She inspired me: unapologetically feminine, funny, smart, strong and entirely herself. And considering my ‘crazy’ cowboy boot collection and lifelong obsession with Western fashion, apparently she planted a few fashion seeds in there too. ❤️ But what I admired most was her humanity. Dolly stood with people who were marginalized. She supported the LGBTQ+ community, spoke against racism and racial injustice, and used her platform to remind us that dignity and kindness shouldn’t depend on who you are, who you love or what you look like. She was generous too! Her Imagination Library put books into the hands of millions of children, and you already KNOW: books + children + reading everything you can get your hands on? I’m in. Reading to me is essential and instills empathy.

Losing people like her feels heavy right now because you hope the seeds she planted took root in enough of us, to look beyond ourselves, stand up against injustice even when it doesn’t affect us, and look out for the people who need us most. Four-year-old me loved Dolly. Almost 50-year-old me understands why. And apparently, she may also be responsible for all these damn cowboy boots. 🙌🏽✨❤️🤠👢Rest beautifully, Dolly. 🕊️ by @jahayraharrell

Today feels like the end of something special. Benito back in PR, where it all started; closing out a world tour built around an album that, for me, will remain one of the greatest love letters ever written to Puerto Rico. Yes, he was celebrated and criticized; I celebrated his artistry. At that level, you’re never going to please everyone. But I know what I saw. I saw Puerto Rico on a global stage, displaying who we are authentically. Not because Puerto Rico needed Bad Bunny to matter, we have ALWAYS mattered, but because he had one of the biggest platforms in the world and chose to use it to tell our stories. He revisited our music, genres, classics and history. He made people dance while making them curious about our culture, politics and colonial reality. And he put the WORLD to dance. He had people everywhere singing and learning our dialecto de español, the same Puerto Rican Spanish so many have criticized or called “improper.” He didn’t water it down. The world had to come to us. I never made it to see Benito in person. Life had me busy in other directions, but I was okay knowing whatever seat I might have occupied was filled by someone else having the time of their life. Those blessed to experience it in person have a concert they’ll never forget. But that’s the beauty of what he created, you didn’t have to be there to feel it. We danced donde quiera, cause his music played EVERYWHERE. We sang. We felt the pride, nostalgia and history. That’s artistry. You don’t get work like this all the time. You can’t replicate a moment like this. And it inspired me. It made me more focused, telling our stories, honoring where we come from and thinking bigger about where this little brand can go. Watching someone unapologetically center where they come from reminds you that you don’t have to dilute your story to make it bigger. And I know one thing for damn sure, si Isa estuviera viva, she’d have a Medalla in her hand, dancing and singing to Bad Bunny. 😂🇵🇷 She loved to live. So I congratulate Benito and the incredible team that brought this vision to life. They created something that made Puerto Rico impossible to ignore. Gracias, @badbunnypr 🇵🇷❤️ by @jahayraharrell

Style is built over time.

I learned to love my grey hair while yearning for my hair of before. And now, I see it as part of me, my style.

• Shirt designed by the hubby (c. 2010)
• Urban Outfitters balloon camo pants
• Steve Madden sandals
• Fan bought from fellow Bori Vendor 🪭🇵🇷💋

It’s been over a week since @jianharrell graduated, and I’ve been meaning to post. Between life being crazy busy and photos continuing to come in from family and friends, I’ve also been taking some time to process what this moment really means.

And just like that, my last child has graduated from high school. For those who know where I come from, this moment means more than I can put into words. Watching all three of my Kings reach this point is something I will never take for granted.

Jian is now headed to college to study Musical Theater, and I couldn’t be prouder. For years, our lives revolved around auditions, rehearsals, dance classes, voice lessons, performances, and countless hours spent together in the car. Some of my favorite memories are the conversations we shared in between all those moments.

Jian, you are an extraordinary actor, dancer, and singer, but talent alone isn’t enough. As I’ve always told you: be hungry. Want it. Go for it. Sharpen the pencil. Push yourself beyond what feels comfortable. The people who succeed are often the ones who keep going when others stop.

And always remember, ‘Go Where You Are Loved’.

This isn’t the end of the journey. It’s the beginning of a new chapter, a bigger stage, and another opportunity to discover what you’re TRULY capable of. Congratulations, Papi!!! I love you, I believe in you, and I can’t wait to see what comes next.

Twenty years later, and it felt like coming home.

It’s been almost a week since our spring recital, and I’m still carrying the joy of that day with me.

Returning to @segundaquimbamba as a student after 20 years was a beautiful reminder of the power of culture, community, and Bomba. What Juan Cartagena, Nanette Hernández, the maestros, and the entire Segunda Quimbamba familia have built is a gift, and honestly something we ALL need more than ever!

As I continue honoring my mother’s journey through Isa de Ponce, experiences like this remind me that home isn’t always a place; sometimes it’s a community that welcomes you back with open arms.

My heart is full. ❤️ by @jahayraharrell

Some things are bigger than business.

Honored to help create a tribute for Robert Killduff, a fallen Boston firefighter, former Marine, and third-generation firefighter.

Keeping Bobby’s family, friends, and fellow firefighters in our thoughts. ❤️🚒
