In four months, I’ll be 50. FIFTY! And lately, I’ve been reflecting on where I’ve been, where I am, and where I’m headed. I keep going back to ShoeGangsta. Back in 2009, before Instagram took over, I launched a TypePad blog dedicated to my obsession with shoes, my style ‘conquests’, and finds from my travels through Europe, Asia, and across the U.S. It was a passion project, and I went ALL IN. With my hubby’s full support, I invested in photography, hair and makeup artists, and even curated the blog's music. I had a vision, and I was so proud of it. The love and support came immediately, but so did the haters. Not everyone cheered. Some showed their true colors, while others were already mastering the art of hiding behind a screen. Instead of recognizing I might be onto something, I let their negativity get in my head. I took the blog down. Looking back, those first signs of hate may have been the first signs that I was onto something! I wish I had been the woman that I am today, because the number of fucks I don’t give these days is PLENTIFUL! 😂 But I still wonder… where could ShoeGangsta have taken me? My love for style never left, and neither did my obsession with shoes. ShoeGangsta still lives in me, just older, grayer, and far more fearless. And I KNOW some of you original fans are still out there. All three of you! 😂❤️ So to anyone who’s 32, younger, older, or anywhere in between, here’s what I’ve learned 17 years later: NEVER let someone’s opinion, criticism, or inability to see your vision make you abandon something you believe in. I believed in ShoeGangsta, but I let other voices drown out my own. Trust yourself. Embrace the discomfort. Keep going. And when the haters come? QUE SE JODAN.

My mom used to call me a bruja. Pero me decía ‘witch’… No se porque, because yo soy la más santita. 😇😂

Wearing my BRUJA crewneck, online this week, with 4-camo shorts I rescued from my husband’s giveaway pile. He now wants them back. Mira coño… once it hits the giveaway pile, all sales are final. 😂

One of the biggest blessings behind Isa de Ponce is that I happen to be married to an artist. ❤️ These photos are from Donwan’s exhibit and BTS, but they also tell a little of the story behind Isa. For years, I’ve had a front-row seat to someone who understands design, manufacturing and how to take an idea and make it real.

Isa began because I missed my mom terribly. I found myself looking for her everywhere, in her humor, her boldness, her sin pelos en la lengua personality, her dislike of injustice and the way she made room for everyone. Being in the garment industry, clothing became a natural way for me to express all of that. But building Isa has become a family affair. Donwan has his own art, projects and career, yet he still makes time for my million ideas. He’s learned machinery in our shop to help create Isa pieces, loads trucks, sets up tents and works festivals beside me. Now our son is doing the same, even taking markets on his own when events conflict.

We actually tried to have a reception for this exhibit, but life and work kept getting in the way, and part of that “work” was Donwan spending his weekends at festivals supporting me. So instead of squeezing in something his work deserves more from, we decided we’ll come back, bring it all together in one space and give him a proper reception.

I have big dreams for Isa, including a full clothing collection one day, and I know how fortunate I am to have someone beside me who understands what it takes to get there. So this one is for Donwan @kingkrash , the artist, designer, husband and one of the people quietly helping me build this thing. TQM❤️ by @isa.de.ponce

🎤✨ Hispanic Heritage Month, con nuestra gente.

We wanted to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by extending the spirit of Mercadito beyond market day and shining a light on the amazing vendors, creatives, and community members who make it so special.

First up: @isa.de.ponce ❤️

We asked our vendor friends a few questions about where they’re from, their culture, their work, and what Hispanic heritage means to them. Because Mercadito has always been about more than shopping. It’s about comunidad, cultura, connection, and supporting each other.

And we’re celebrating that all month long… and beyond. 🇵🇷🇩🇴🇨🇴🇲🇽✨

Watch, share, follow, and most importantly, support our amazing vendor friends. There are so many more stories to come.

Mucho mucho amor,
Iris + Rosa 💛

I’ve only made it through the introduction to Oscar Lewis’s La Vida, published in 1966, but I’m already encojoná by the anthropological gaze through which this Puerto Rican family is presented. I’m mindful of the period in which it was written, and perhaps I’m approaching this book as a Puerto Rican reader who studied anthropology. Still, I find myself questioning where observation ends and interpretation, and even judgment, begins. I learned in college that there is a significant difference between documenting the realities of poverty and letting one family's experiences carry the weight of a broader cultural explanation.

Maybe this is also why I continue to read and educate myself from as many angles as possible about what it means to be Puerto Rican. Our identity is complicated: historically, culturally, racially, economically, politically, and across the diaspora, and I’ve become more and more resistant to anyone, including our own people, reducing it to a single narrative. The more I learn, the less interested I am in judging Puerto Rican identity and the more interested I am in understanding its complexity. I’m curious to see whether my discomfort with this book shifts as I continue reading. by @isa.de.ponce

My amiga had arroz con gandules to make, no time to make a fresh batch of sofrito, and store-bought was NOT an option. So apparently this qualified as a Boricua emergency. 😅

Today feels like the end of something special. Benito back in PR, where it all started; closing out a world tour built around an album that, for me, will remain one of the greatest love letters ever written to Puerto Rico. Yes, he was celebrated and criticized; I celebrated his artistry. At that level, you’re never going to please everyone. But I know what I saw. I saw Puerto Rico on a global stage, displaying who we are authentically. Not because Puerto Rico needed Bad Bunny to matter, we have ALWAYS mattered, but because he had one of the biggest platforms in the world and chose to use it to tell our stories. He revisited our music, genres, classics and history. He made people dance while making them curious about our culture, politics and colonial reality. And he put the WORLD to dance. He had people everywhere singing and learning our dialecto de español, the same Puerto Rican Spanish so many have criticized or called “improper.” He didn’t water it down. The world had to come to us. I never made it to see Benito in person. Life had me busy in other directions, but I was okay knowing whatever seat I might have occupied was filled by someone else having the time of their life. Those blessed to experience it in person have a concert they’ll never forget. But that’s the beauty of what he created, you didn’t have to be there to feel it. We danced donde quiera, cause his music played EVERYWHERE. We sang. We felt the pride, nostalgia and history. That’s artistry. You don’t get work like this all the time. You can’t replicate a moment like this. And it inspired me. It made me more focused, telling our stories, honoring where we come from and thinking bigger about where this little brand can go. Watching someone unapologetically center where they come from reminds you that you don’t have to dilute your story to make it bigger. And I know one thing for damn sure, si Isa estuviera viva, she’d have a Medalla in her hand, dancing and singing to Bad Bunny. 😂🇵🇷 She loved to live. So I congratulate Benito and the incredible team that brought this vision to life. They created something that made Puerto Rico impossible to ignore. Gracias, @badbunnypr 🇵🇷❤️ by @isa.de.ponce

Before the flags filled the streets, Puerto Rican families were building lives in Jersey City. Beginning in the 1940s and ’50s, Boricuas came here for work, built families, businesses and community, and carried Puerto Rico with them.

In 1961, Puerto Ricans organized Jersey City’s first Puerto Rican Day Parade out of a need for cultural identification. 66 years later, aquí estamos. 🇵🇷 This weekend, Isa de Ponce gets to be a small part of that history, celebrating what Boricuas have always done wherever we land:

Llevar a Puerto Rico con nosotros. ❤️🇵🇷

This weekend, two women loved our hats… until they turned them around and saw them branded with ‘Isa de Ponce’.

That moment reminded me why this brand exists in the first place.

Some stories are bigger than the product. ❤️🇵🇷

Las caras lindas en el Festival Puertorriqueño de Boston 2026

Every picture has a story. ❤️🇵🇷

Isa never met a stranger. She loved to chat it up, making people laugh, and, of course… el jangueo. Every festival reminds us that it’s never just about the hats or the t-shirts. It’s about la gente: the conversations, the laughter, and the connections.

Eso es Isa de Ponce.

Gracias por tanto cariño. @prfestivalma
