Still going through all my Meta glasses footage from Unbound…This section was crazy! A little embarrassed I didn’t send it into the water harder but also glad I didn’t end up swimming. 🤣

Probably the fastest pit I’ve ever done at Unbound! Massive shoutout to Dad, Caroline, Uncle Pete, and Phil’s son and friend for crushing it for me. If my Garmin LiveTrack had sent the link out like normal I would’ve been out in under a minute. Good times! taken in Emporia, Kansas by @jahoop

Full send for 1 minute at the end of tonight’s CPW roll. Best 1-minute power I’ve ever done and snagged a cheeky KOM in the process. 😎 taken in Carolina Pedal Works by @jahoop

For the first time in a few years, I actually trained specifically for Unbound. I came into this one excited to see what I could do and hoping for my best finish yet. The forecast looked sketchy all week, but I stuck with the plan, didn’t change the bike setup, and just sent it.

The day turned into an absolute roller coaster. Mud, rain, heat, headwinds, and all the mental and physical challenges that come with racing 200 miles across the Flint Hills.

Early on, things were going about as well as I could have hoped. I worked my way from 99th overall at mile 9 to 46th at mile 115, stayed on top of nutrition, rode within myself, and honestly had a blast ripping through the mud and rain.

About eight hours in, everything changed. The sun came out, the wind shifted to a brutal headwind, and suddenly all the groups were gone. I struggled for the next few hours with the heat and then mentally as I watched a sub-12-hour finish slip away.

Around hour 11, the pity party ended. I got my head back in the game, picked up the pace, and brought it home in 12:11:40 — good for 76th overall and 12th in the 40-44 age group.

Most importantly, it was my fifth Unbound finish, which means I’m officially a member of the 1,000 Mile Club. 🍾

Huge thanks to my dad, Caroline, and Uncle Pete for crushing it in the pits all day. Having a great crew made a massive difference this year.

And of course, thank you to my wife for putting up with this obsession for another season. Love you. ❤️

As for the future of Unbound, I’m honestly not sure. Part of me thinks it’s time for a new challenge. The other part thinks there’s still an age-group podium out there if everything comes together on the right day.

We’ll see.

P.S. If you’re thinking about Unbound, hire a good coach. Working with @carolinemani1987 this year was a game changer. For the first time in a long time, I showed up knowing I was truly prepared, and that confidence mattered just as much as the fitness. taken in Emporia, Kansas by @jahoop

Started the ride trying to watch Liege Baston Liege while riding… ended it completely cracked riding back into Granite with Cody, 109 miles and 5:50 later. Hell of a day for a bike ride with a great crew. taken in Granite Falls, North Carolina by @jahoop

Funny song suggestion from Instagram because I in fact did not have a good time at the Bootlegger yesterday. To be completely honest I was calculating how much I could make selling all my gravel stuff while I suffered up Maple Sally! 🤣

I’m starting to think this just isn’t the race for me but it’s 30 minutes from the house so I have to support it.

Not a great result but more hay in the barn for Unbound…. Maybe after that I’ll sell the gravel bike and go race crits once and for all 🫣 taken in Carolina Pedal Works by @jahoop

50 miles with the front group followed by 97 miles mainly by myself had me feeling like 😵

Croatan might not be the most scenic course out there but it’s a guaranteed way to find out where you stand early in the season.

Massive shoutout to the family and the Smiths for coming along and cheering me on!

Also big thanks to Coach @carolinemani1987 for whipping my ass into shape this winter! 30-minute PR at this race with some great power numbers. It’s gonna be a good year! 💪🏼
