Worli Koliwada: The Edge Of The City [Illustration]

Bombay, 2024

Medium: Hand Sketches + Digital Painting (Photoshop)

Another urban illustration from my series of artworks documenting Bombay from a personal lens, and its multiple transitional spaces I navigate and develop a personal connection with.

At the tip of Worli’s fishing village, exists an oasis that reflects a paradox. I, along with @01vinay_katariya , visited this spot almost a year ago, to document the fringes of the city’s rich and complex urban fabric, only to enter a completely different elaborate community of it’s own. Detached from the city, yet an integral part of the city itself.

This canvas speaks for itself. The vantage point, the boats, the fishing equipment, the shelters and landscapes, the gentle sea and the chaotic skyline of South Bombay in the backdrop, the layers of the Koliwada itself, and traces of passing time observed on a slow Tuesday afternoon away from the hustle bustle of the city.

 शहर से कुछ दूरी पर, उससी शहर के बीच

Hope you like this one!

Here are some quick silly doodles in my silly little sketchbooks that accompany me on my silly little adventures. The imposter syndrome is at an all-time high this week, and so is the urge to switch my brain off and take a break, devote my entire lifetime to filling up my sketchbooks with a million little sketches like these, and probably travel back in time to 2007 and turn my swag on. This is my report card.

Gonna pick up some new commissions and projects soon.

In yet another episode of indulging in sketching breaks as a form of daily escapism, I’ve chosen a cafe that’s become home outside home for me in Mumbai - Method Bandra (now @haikubandra).

I love perching myself at the community table towards the corner of the space and zoning out, accompanied by the sounds of jazz and hip-hop in the background, and friendly baristas that inject this space with warmth, heart, and amazing coffee.

Naturally, my urge to honour this everyday view as a canvas for my art kicked in. I sketched this between my work and reflection breaks. With each sketch, I feel an increasing sense of belonging, and a part of that space itself. Cafés can be the most beautiful third spaces that balance the pace of fast-paced polluted cities, where breathing feels easy.

Check it out!

Out of hibernation to announce my first solo exhibition at @methodbandra - a space that’s been a steady oasis of my comfort and creativity in the past 3 years of living in Mumbai.

Titled ‘There Is Life Between The Cracks’, the ongoing series of mixed-media illustrations reflects a personal and intimate connection with Mumbai’s everyday urban spaces, from an outsider’s lens. I’m really excited to showcase my current set of illustrations in a public setting, in the journey of completing this series.

Primarily consisting of hand-drawn sketches with digital painting weaving atmosphere into it, these works capture streets, edges, in-between spaces, transit zones, and quiet corners where the everyday urban fabric intersects with personal reflections.

There will be 8 main illustrations, and a range of posters and doodles available for purchase.

🗓️ On display from Friday, 1st August to Sunday, 31st August.

☕️ I’ll also be chilling there on Friday, 7pm onwards, happily taking you through my work with my sketchbooks on display.

Would love to see you all there :)

(Credits to Method and Yuthika for this cool poster)

Commissioned illustration for @bluetokaicoffee

(Poetic one after spending literally half of 2024 at Blue Tokai cafés, which led to this opportunity)

Amongst one of the five artists selected to create a piece. Unfortunately, only one selected artwork made the cut for their limited-edition packaging, and this one didn’t. But stoked to create something new in limited time. Had fun with this.

Life in cities tend to become isolating, especially when it limits us to see-sawing between first places (home), and second places (work). That’s where third spaces like cafés step in as magic pills - fostering social connections and becoming an escape from the clockwork routine.

This illustration captures the charm of urban cafes, where the young meet old, love is rekindled, bonds are strengthened, intellect is fed, art is brewed, and coffee catalyses conversations.

It’s where you can belong, and are invited to feel human once again.

Hi, I am Jaidev - your friendly neighbourhood visual artist, video storyteller, and daydreamer. Of a mix of wandering interests, cities fascinate me, especially our various relationships with the built environment, and the everyday rhythm of urban life. Here is a short glimpse of my art, through a sketchbooks.

In 2022, I left Gurgaon for Mumbai after graduation. For work, but also because I was restless for change and wanted to start from scratch. To get a taste of independent living, I chose to live by myself, navigating a city that had far intrigued me with it’s cinematic mosaic of stories.

However, in the chaos, I found myself lost more often than not, chasing something that didn’t feel real. To slow down and reconnect, I looked closer - shifting my focus to everyday rituals and spaces that felt personal (streets, edges, neighbourhoods, transit zones, etc.)

These sketches and illustrations emerge from that journey, as I slow Mumbai down through detailed scribbles in my sketchbook. Every sketch and illustration has a personal narrative from the moments in-between, where I finally found life between the cracks.

Here is me trying to embrace video as a tool to showcase my art, which I have been hesitant to tackle for so long (with a cool song). Don’t forget to check out my work ✨

Storyboard Illustrations - Hullabaloove | Péro’s Fashion Collection - Videos and Animation | Commissioned by Vikas Maurya Production House (VMPH)

From the archives - An old project from 2024.

Medium: Hand Sketches (Brush Pen, Microns, Ball Pens)

Transcended my comfort zone to work on something super different - conceptual storyboard illustrations for Péro’s video campaigns on their (then) new garment line. All the doodles in my sketchbook became the starting point of visualising a universe that @mauryavikas trusted me with.

Barbapapa, a children’s book and animation series from the 70s, is the central theme of the fashion line, as well as the documentation. Youngsters donning the garments enter the whimsical world of Barbapapa, and imbibe their characteristics during multiple activities.

Playful, silly, mischievous, chaotic, shapeshifting, and quirky. These became keywords that enabled me to visualise the narrative and shots, as directed by VMPH team. Ideas transformed into mini-comic panels like from the Archies, lending it expressive and playful charm. Even the comics itself were testament to cultural and fashion statements of that era, so it fit well.

Tokyo drifted my pens into eternity, creating all of this within a week’s span. To see them come to life in videos and films is what makes it beautiful.

Check out the whole series on @ilovepero !

Nostalgia (n): a sentimental longing or wistful affection for a period in the past.

My first real Mumbai apartment was in the far-flung island of Madh. It was a 1BHK, where I stayed in the hall, and I kept my space very bare-bones: a mattress, a plant, a cupboard and a rug.

The room had a single piece of art - Edward Hopper’s ’Nighthawk’, a painting about the city’s profound loneliness; a perfecrt reflection of my state of mind.

Then, I moved to a new tastefully-furnished house on the mainland. And with the ease of access came a flurry of friends who loved house-partying here as much as I did. And they all gave me souvenirs to display in the new glass case above my headboard.

Jaidev, then a new acquaintance, came by to one of these parties, and gave us all postcard copies of his beautiful art. Almost on a whim, I asked if he would make a custom illustration.

Funnily, the Hopper painting had not survived for long in the new house, and I never re-printed it - I was not lonely anymore. But Jaidev thought we could pay homage to Hopper in the illustration instead - with a different painting, 'Morning Sun'.

Thus was born an idea - me, in the house I adored, surrounded by elements from past, present and future.

Years have gone by since.

In a full circle, Jaidev completed the artwork on the cusp of his own move, right when I was reminiscing about the old house while listening to the new, nostalgic record by @gorillaz (an animated band!).

And on the day of the festival of colours nonetheless!

I love the poetry of life.

Sometimes I have a sneaking suspicion that whoever up there was responsible for creating me just had a rough Sunday morning, hungover, recovering from the effects of multiple drinks that have no business being mixed together, forced to complete one final task on their only day off, grumpily making their way to the kitchen, distracted by the pain from stubbing their toe on the way, and carelessly mixing a bunch of traits in terribly erratic and confused proportions to create god knows what. Their intentions were sincere, even though the end result looks like random slop. (I only feel like this sometimes. Otherwise I’m all good.)

This sums up my 2025. Thought I’d break the artwork streak and post a photo dump from last year, like having the audacity to show my face at a party I’m unfashionably late to after everyone’s either left or collapsed. Woops.

2025 was a year of accidents, both rough and happy ones. Lot of shifts. Lot of stumbles. Lot of firsts. And a bunch of moments worth turning into stories I would narrate for ages to come. Aage kya hoga idea nahi so I won’t hope or predict anything. Thank you to everyone who was part of this journey.

More art soon! ✨ by @jaidev_tripathy

I’ll be in conversation with Jane Borges, Avijit Mukul Kishore and Jaidev Tripathy, in a panel moderated by Sneha Tiwari Jain, tomorrow at the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, in Bombay. I was invited by Sneha a while ago, and was struck by how close her panel’s premise is to my first book, Daydream Delusion.

We will talk about the city, how cities are not shaped by architecture alone. The city is imagined, felt, experienced, and lamented through photography, through cinema, through literature, through art. Art constructs the city in our heads, both in the stories that it tells, and in the way it shapes and reimagines our lived realities.
