When was the last time you gave a round of applause to a wedding band?

Nostalgia (n): a sentimental longing or wistful affection for a period in the past.

My first real Mumbai apartment was in the far-flung island of Madh. It was a 1BHK, where I stayed in the hall, and I kept my space very bare-bones: a mattress, a plant, a cupboard and a rug.

The room had a single piece of art - Edward Hopper’s ’Nighthawk’, a painting about the city’s profound loneliness; a perfecrt reflection of my state of mind.

Then, I moved to a new tastefully-furnished house on the mainland. And with the ease of access came a flurry of friends who loved house-partying here as much as I did. And they all gave me souvenirs to display in the new glass case above my headboard.

Jaidev, then a new acquaintance, came by to one of these parties, and gave us all postcard copies of his beautiful art. Almost on a whim, I asked if he would make a custom illustration.

Funnily, the Hopper painting had not survived for long in the new house, and I never re-printed it - I was not lonely anymore. But Jaidev thought we could pay homage to Hopper in the illustration instead - with a different painting, 'Morning Sun'.

Thus was born an idea - me, in the house I adored, surrounded by elements from past, present and future.

Years have gone by since.

In a full circle, Jaidev completed the artwork on the cusp of his own move, right when I was reminiscing about the old house while listening to the new, nostalgic record by @gorillaz (an animated band!).

And on the day of the festival of colours nonetheless!

I love the poetry of life.

Ustad Bantoo (June 2024 - Till this story lives)

The only way I can describe this film is one big butterfly effect. I would have never been able to meet the talent I met through this film, it was humbling to see what people in this team were capable of.

This film changed me, troubled me, taught me, inspired me, empowered me and made me insecure. I’m not the same person I was before this, it will always hold a very special place in my life.

The Indian wedding band musicians have changed the way I look at art forever. It’s a world filled with some hidden gems of artists.🎺

Our film is not perfect, yes we should reshoot a lot of scenes, yes there are camera shakes, abrupt focus shifts, sound disturbance, accent slips and a 1000 other imperfections. But I happily accept it as part of this film, it’s a part of the form now, it is part of the art. Every creation has a very crucial element which makes it what it is, something we always shy away from - “circumstances”. At that time, in that moment and in those circumstances, everyone on of us made the best use of our instinct (kalaa) and craft (kaarigari). That is what we were worth at that time, that was what we could do with our skills. We have learnt a lot from the process and I’m sure we will avoid a lot of mistakes if we do this whole thing again, that however would mean that we don’t accept ourselves for who we are. We’re trying to portray a more glorified image of ourselves than what we actually are and this goes agaisnt the central idea of this story. This film is all about accepting yourself for who you are, this film is for everyone. IFFR world premiere. An interview with a Rotterdam based Indian diaspora community.

Some talks end on stage.
Ours walked back home with us.

In December, when Prateek shared our journey at TEDxRambaug, he spoke about building quietly. This carousel invites you to swipe and scroll through our journey.

If you spot yourself in these photos, you are not just a guest. You are part of this.

The full talk is on YouTube if you would like to watch it. But honestly, the real version plays out here every day.

Thank you for growing with us. 🤍

Ustad Bantoo marked the official beginning of its journey at the prestigious International Film Festival of Rotterdam.

It was exciting and humbling at the same time to be amongst a lineup of some extremely talented filmmakers across the world.

For us it was an absolute honour to present the story of Indian wedding bands on a global platform. The people of Rotterdam who probably might have never seen an Indian wedidng band before got to see a glimpse of this world through the eyes of Bantoo.

We hope Bantoo’s story stays alive in their conversations and in their minds🎺

Thank you @iffr for providing us this platform, Bantoo’s journey couldn’t have had a better start
