CONVERSATIONS (a fusion of spirit )
Creating a dialogue between the fibres of my two countries Fiji (Masi) and New Zealand (Muka)

In this body of work I explore the relationship between these two fibres, Masi and Muka, learning to understand the language they create together. Sometimes poetry, sometimes song, always story. Each holds strong spirit. Each has a voice. Each allows the other to be heard.
These works are conversations between countries, cultures, materials and memory - a fusion of spirit woven through fibre, place and time.
I invite you to listen with your eyes.

Coconut fibre birds now flocking together at Kumeu Arts Pod Gallery. Opening night this Friday 31st from 5-7 pm. The exhibition is entitled “ Conversations” … exploring the diverse and evocative dialogues between equally diverse and evocative fibres from New Zealand and the Pacific. by @jainerubine

Examples of all the various fibres I’ve used in this exhibition, so guests can satisfy the urge to touch without handling the artwork. Also a lesson in the ethnic terminology and origin of each fibre. by @jainerubine

Two more moths for the collection the first is very fine white masi and the brown one is from Fijian wedding tapa. Bodies are carved from coconut husk. Wing span 30cms by @jainerubine

Now at the framers in preparation for my solo exhibition “Conversations” at the end of this month at Kumeu Arts. The dialogue is between the various lovely natural fibres… masi ( barkcloth) , single strand flax fibre, ribbon bark, plaited coconut fibre, coconut midrib, and Jobs Tears ( the little grey seeds) … by @jainerubine
