My boy is no longer in pain.

Forest found me at a time in my life when we both needed each other greatest. He was abandoned in Louisiana swamp lands back in 2020. We both stumbled into one another at the cross sections of confusion and a need for change.

I'll never forget the veterinarians at @compassionkind promising me how wonderful of a life Forest would have despite his former mistreatment and survival of advanced heartworms. Somehow, I think they also saw something between us that was more than the beauty of coincidence. Like many dog owners, I knew our time together wouldn't be forever. What I didn't know is how nebulous that chance of us finding each other would be in making new worlds together. How enlivened and cherished six years of learning would yield.

Forest and I traveled many miles together, to Colorado, to the PNW, and to Texas; a place we both learned how to call home. The distances we wandered with both of our hearts together is infinite.

In his final days, he reminded me that love carries us through our most difficult experiences. Forest taught me how to be patient. He showed me how to give a chance on those bits of hope that bring us all together in moments of deep uncertainty and a need for care. My little Swamp Bear taught me to see that even in moments of immense precarity, we can help each other increase the odds of serendipty and peace.

I believe there's a force of matter and emotion that we can all call on when we genuinely need it the most.

Forest is a product of that force; a rose in the pines that brought me to new paths of clarity and empathy.

My boy gave himself away to keep me under the sun a little longer. He showed me that the strength of selfless love has no limits if you're willing to first love yourself to help others in need.

Forest Jansen harbored the soul of a teacher akin to the kind of person only a dog could dream of. Now it's time for me to continue my journey in the dreams of a world filled with people as generous as Forest.

I'll see you on the other side, my dear. 🌲🌹🌲

Rest easy, Forest. by @jake__jansen

My doctoral dissertation is officially re-aligning with astronomy communities in Texas, specialist technologies and economies of outer space observation, a critical perspective on federal outer space projects, and cosmic questions that have shaped me since I was a kid staring up at the night sky.

I’m trying my hand at a bit of public-facing writing. Here's my latest piece to welcome you aboard to something I am playfully launching as Astropology. Let me know what you think!

My new piece, "Intracosmalogical Beginnings", asks how anthropology might rethink life, knowledge, and imagination when our sense of the “planetary” becomes inseparable from the stars that made us. My forthcoming dissertation research explores the social lives of astronomers, the politics of cosmic vision, and the ontological boundaries we draw between matter and meaning.

Poem Title: Our Arrangements of the Stars
Author: J. Jansen

To see the stars is political.

To question why we "see" anything at all is to feel our differences, a constellation of possibilities and wonder.

We share the same origins of mass but often refuse to question the scales that have measured us.

To be outside and feel the experience of our arrangements is to admit that we are not always in control of what we see.

When we reside in darkness and silence, we begin to sense the power of our orders.

Do not forget the stars that will outlast the configuration of our arrangements. by @jake__jansen

On January 9, I submitted an application to @tinkerlabsrecording on behalf of our band, @ashlessband. We were invited to record for a day at @singingsandspdx studio on February 17.

Tinker Labs is an opportunity for musicians to experiment with their creative direction, made possible by @croulie. The goal? Record an original track that utilizes a constructive guiding theme.

My friends and I have been shaping songs in our basement for months now. For those of you who know me well, you're aware that @andyterhune and I have been creating music together for 12+ years. To say this experience was a big deal for all of us is an understatement.

On studio day, we recorded two tracks in 5 hours, playing with the theme of "space." Our first instinct--as a psychadelic noise band--was to tango with the cosmos, but we also implemented things like boundaries, allowing for breathing room in between bass lines and drum fills, and we got to experience the space of being on separate recording channels mediated by analog and digital gadgets and gizmos.

As a musician and anthropologist, I've worked hard to have the privileges of this full life I live, but this particular studio experience really stands out as a major highlight in all my efforts to create something beyond myself for the sake of community and sound. To be able to create with friends through music is a language of love that fundamentally makes me excited about the future. Music heals. It transposes the tensions of everyday and abstract challenges, too. Music allows us to feel beyond the moment and entirely within it.

You can listen to the tracks we recorded ('Making Space') on our @bandcamp page (🔗 in bio). Track 1 was the first song we unleashed in the studio, and after several live takes, we realized it was the one that felt the most dynamic. Track 4 is another song that captivates our experimentation with our friends at @tinkerlabsrecording. Track 2 & 3 were recorded and mixed in the Ashless Dungeon.

@ashlessband is playing our first show on Saturday, March 2, at @thefirkintavern with @salmon_doza and @decent_sleep. We go on at 8:00PM, and would love to see you there.

Much love,

Jake taken in singingsandspdx by @jake__jansen
