I went home this past weekend to preach.

After church I got to go out to lunch with several members of my family. A time was had! So many laughs, great conversations, and the wild feeling that we had a table as big as the ones we’d get when I was a kid and yet we were missing so many people. Our family’s growth is a powerful mirror of how we only age in one direction.

While leaving one of my beautiful nieces and her three children were saying goodbye and little Nora came and gave me a hug. She laid her precious little head on my shoulder and I got so emotional telling her “you know how much your uncle Jake loves you right? I pray for you and I miss you, you know that right?”

Softly and without flinching she replied, “I know”

I’d travel home, prep a sermon, have a 4 hour delayed flight that required me to stay another night and wake up early to catch another flight to get home ALL OVER AGAIN if it meant I was going to get hold my sweet little great-niece and tell her she’s loved, prayed for, and considered.

Can’t lie, a few tears welling up writing this and they are tears well worth it. I love this family and the “good ol days” are nothing compared to now with these new little ones.

My wife is a legend and surprised me with the best last day of school celebration.

She assembles all of my best guy friends in Charlotte for a night of laser tag, food, and talks about Jesus over cigars and whiskey:

I FINALLY turned in my last assignments for seminary and I’m feeling a wave of pressure and weight come off of my shoulders. In different ways every one of these men have been the greatest encouragements to me through this journey and have challenged me, heard me, helped me with assignments, and inspired me to finish strong. I’m so grateful for this community God has put in my corner. I hope I can be half the encouragement to them as they are to me!

My nephew, Nathaniel, is such a wonderful human being and I love him more than I could ever put into words. To see him several years married to a wonderful woman and having children lights up my soul. Home is where my family is, and for that, Maryland is the most special place in the world.

This is his youngest. I call her sister the queen, so this is her royal highness the duchess. I’m so lucky to have her among my other 13 great nieces and nephews 🫶🏾 by @jakepackett

11 years married. But let’s be honest, even when we tried to make it not the case, you’ve been my girl for nearly 20 years.

Happiest anniversary to my Eme. We are completely different people now compared to 10 years ago and 10 years before that. Let that be a testimony that our commitment to each other and submission to our God is sufficient. My home, my life, my wife. My words, my body, and the fruits of my labor belong to you. I’m so proud to be your husband, and cheers to many more years together by God’s grace. I love you.

I got to chat with one of my heroes today.

This is Jim. Way back in the day when Edgewater Fitness was a Gold’s Gym, I watched him walk over to the pull-up bar and knock out 15–20 reps. At the time, I couldn’t do a single pull-up and thought to myself, “I want to be like that guy someday.”

17 years later, I saw him working out on one of my trips home and we got to talking. That’s when I found out Jim is 92 years old. Today, he was doing windshield wipers on the pull-up bar. I told him he’s been a fitness icon for me since my senior year of high school and that meeting him was an honor because he has inspired me for so many years.

He’s such a great hang, super fun to talk to, and an absolute baller in the gym. He’s a fantastic reminder that in a world full of excuses, there’s a Jim out there who never quit and has a quality of life most 65-year-olds don’t have. It’s easy to get wrapped up in aesthetics and ego lifting while we’re young.

Jim reminds me that the real ones do this for life. Thanks for being in the back of my mind every time I do a pull-up, sir. taken in Edgewater Fitness by @jakepackett

I’m way behind on this post, but a little while ago I got to be back in Austin Texas and spend time with some dear friends some of which I haven’t seen in nearly 10 years. It’s amazing to see how God sustains and grows people overtime, and I feel super blessed to have gotten to spend some time with him after my work conference.

Right before heading home, I got to visit my favorite steak house in the country. And all I have to say about that is to God be the glory 😂

ONE THOUSAND

It happened guys. I logged my 1000th workout in @strong.app yesterday. This was a milestone I had been chasing for some time and I’m so pumped to have finally reached quadruple digits.

My #1 motivation is that years ago, I looked at my wife @erikaelphotography and told her “I would never willfully forsake my youth”. To the day I die, I hope to give my wife the gift of a physically and mentally strong husband who’s capable of giving hell to any danger that threatens our house, and giving life to any soul inside our house. Just because we vowed “in sickness and in health” doesn’t mean I have to make the former a guarantee through my lifestyle. My wife deserves the best I can offer. I hope milestones like this demonstrate my love and devotion to her that I may keep her safe and appease her eyes.

Also, I gotta shout out Mr. Bill. I met him at @vinefitnessig and he’s just one of the most joyous people I’ve ever met while I was traveling in Cincinnati last week for work. It was a lovely three days at this gym.

It’s just an app, and it’s just a log since ~2019, but I’m insanely proud of how far I’ve come in my fitness journey over the past 6 years. Honestly, my logged wrights for my 1000th workout were terrible because I was up late working the night before, but who cares. Last week, I logged my 900th workout in the @strong.app and before the year is over, I’ll get to quadruple digits. It’s really incredible to use an app like this for the past several years and see the progress I’ve made. It’s a reminder to keep going even when it gets really hard. I’m proud of these milestones.

To be honest, it’s an act of gratitude towards my creator, and a labor of love for my spouse. A strong body is loved body equipped to love others.

You ever have that friend that kind of surprises you? The one you love to be around? A friend you respect and love? A friend that makes you feel better at everything because he’s around?

Carlos is absolutely one of those friends for me. Goodness do I love this dude. He’s a man of God, who honors God with his gifts, his relationships, and his dreams. I’m particularly grateful I get to call him friend. He inspires confidence.
