For so long I was that natural hair girly who knew what to do but still wasn’t seeing results. And that frustration is real. Every salon visit felt like progress, until we had to cut so much off because I just wasn’t maintaining it the right way in between. My length retention was suffering and I didn’t even fully understand why.

That’s exactly why I created this new series “Our Journey to Waist Length Hair” because I know I’m not the only one who has been here. Doing the most, staying consistent, and still feeling like your hair goals are out of reach.

Now that I finally have a real grasp on what works. I don’t want to gate-keep. I want to share what I’ve learned throughout this 9-10 month process of staying consistent. I want to help you actually achieve the hair goals you’ve been working toward.

Episode 1 we’re diving deep into why consistent trims are the foundation of every length retention journey and breaking down the science and math behind why it actually works.
And this is just the beginning. Every episode we’re covering a specific piece of what it truly takes to maintain and retain your length.

So be sure to save this, follow the series, share with a friend, and get ready because we’re just getting started 🤭 by @jalightfoot

Welcome to my cozy corner of the internet! Whether you’re new here or you’ve been rocking with me since day one, I feel like it’s been way too long since I’ve actually sat down and introduced myself and the heart behind why I even started creating.

Over 3 years ago I started this journey purely for fun. A friend of mine was like “you should really start posting” and one day I just did it. I had no idea it would grow into something I now consider a passion project, a God given calling, and a creative outlet that stretches me in the best ways. From sharing my natural hair care journey and healthy hair tips/tricks, to putting together fashion inspo that feels true to who I am, to showing up in my faith and hoping something I say points someone back to Jesus, this space has become so much more than I ever imagined.

I can honestly say I am falling more in love with content creation every single day. My goal has always been to be a light, a safe space, and a source of encouragement for anyone who wants to feel seen whether that’s in their walk with God, their natural hair journey, or just figuring out how to live boldly and authentically in their truth.

So slide through to get to know me a little better and drop something about YOU in the comments! I want to know who I’m talking to! This is also the perfect time to share some ideas on what you’d like to see more of content wise so share that too :) by @jalightfoot

🎤 mic’d up (haircare edition) had so much fun with this, might make it a mini series, with protective styles as our feature

tips i recommend:

1) try to have a prep routine before wash day, detox your scalp and detangling your hair makes your shower time so much easier.

2) washing once a week really does help with manageability week over week, ik it’s a commitment but it works!

3) stop drying your hair with cotton towels, paper towels or microfiber towels are your new best friend :)

4) learn to fall in love with the process, ik it can be hard by @jalightfoot

In 2023 I got my hair pressed and it looked amazing. On the outside, everything looked healthy.

But every time I went back to get it pressed again, I was frustrated. Same length. Again. It seemed like my hair just wasn’t growing.

I couldn’t figure it out. My hair “looked” healthy. I wasn’t doing anything “crazy.” So why did it look like it hadn’t grown in months? I remember feeling confused, discouraged, and honestly a little defeated. I started wondering if my hair just didn’t grow.

A year later, I learned the truth: my hair was growing. I just wasn’t keeping it.

Hair grows about half an inch a month. But if you’re losing length at the ends just as fast through breakage, dryness, and rough handling, you’ll never see the progress. That’s the difference between growth and retention.

Here’s what I was doing wrong:

1) Washing my hair whenever I remembered instead of on a weekly wash day

2) Judging my hair’s health by how it looked, not how it felt or held up

3) Ignoring my ends, the oldest and most fragile part of my hair

4) Having no real routine, just guessing and hoping

The pressed hair looked great, but it was hiding the damage. Smooth and shiny on the outside doesn’t mean strong on the inside.

Everything changed when I stopped focusing on the outward look of my hair and started a consistent routine instead of guessing.

1) Weekly wash days so my hair and scalp stayed cleansed and moisturized

2) Protecting my ends so I wasn’t losing what I’d grown

3)Treating my hair gently every step of the way

4) Staying consistent, even when I couldn’t see results right away

It wasn’t about doing more. It was about doing the right things on a schedule. Now when I get my hair pressed, I can actually see the length I’ve kept. And that feeling is everything. If you’ve ever left the salon wondering why your hair “never gets longer,” I promise it’s not your hair. It’s your routine.

For this very reason, I created the Length Retention Playbook. An eight-chapter ebook that helps you build a quality, consistent routine without all the guesswork. So if you’d like your own copy, comment LENGTH and i’ll send you the link to purchase your own copy ($7). by @jalightfoot

There’s nothing like finding a hairstylist who actually cares about your hair, let alone helps educate you on how to take care of it beyond the chair.

I met @kbhairshow last year and y’all i’m not being dramatic when I say I prayed to the Lord to help me find a new hairstylist in the DMV after moving 😂😂 Y’all know this about me: I don’t let just anyone play in my head so when I stumbled upon her IG and saw the quality of her work, I knew immediately she was going to be my hairstylist.

In August 2025, I went in after not having a trim since January 2025 (way too long). She was so honest and transparent with me. She walked me through the entire shampoo, condition, and protein treatment process, recommended how much to trim based on my breakage, and encouraged me to start taking more vitamins and supplements for hair growth since I have an iron deficiency. I’d never had an experience like that, and we’ve been locked in ever since.

Yes, length was a goal, but knowing my hair is healthy is truly the prize. I feel more confident in my overall hair health, and I love leaving each appointment with a great report on how well my hair is doing. 🙌🏾

Appointments like these always leave me with so much joy, and I hope every woman can experience such an amazing relationship with her stylist.

So this is your sign to get you a hairstylist like @kbhairshow If you’re in the DMV, go check her out!! taken in Washington D. C. by @jalightfoot

It has taken me such a long time to finally accept and love my natural hair. I am at a point now where I love my curls, my coils, my texture, and I see how beautiful it truly is.

Loving your natural hair is a journey. It is about learning to love the body, the skin, and the hair that we are in, especially as Black women, when the world has spent so long telling us our natural hair texture was something to fix.

So many of us have asked ourselves, what if texturism did not exist? What if hair discrimination was never something we had to face or even know about? I wanted to share some of the questions I have asked myself on my natural hair journey, because I know so many of you can relate.

If you are learning to love your curl pattern, your coils, your kinks, or your natural texture, this one is for you. Save this for the days you need the reminder. Share it with a friend who is on her own natural hair journey.

And tell me in the comments — what question would you add? by @jalightfoot

John 15:11 - I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.

Philippians 4:4 - Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!

Proverbs 17:22 - A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

Isaiah 55:12 - You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.

Psalms 118:24 - The LORD has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad.

Psalms 51:12 - Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. by @jalightfoot

One year post grad and working full time has taught me one major lesson, you have to fill your cup up and prioritize your health, even when work gets busy.

I’ll be honest, I’m terrified of tech neck and stiff shoulders from sitting at a desk all day. And when I’m traveling for work, healthy eating and self care routines are the first things to slip.

As you get older and gain more professional experience, you realize you cannot pour into your job the way you need to without pouring into yourself first.

That’s exactly why I was so excited to try @thetoxdc . I’ve been dealing with a lot of bloating, tension, and stress in my body, I’m naturally a worrier, and work stress definitely shows up physically.

This lymphatic drainage and de-bloating massage was the perfect way to rejuvenate my body after a long work trip and just get back to feeling refreshed.

Wellness and self care are so important, especially for working women trying to build sustainable routines. If you get the chance to try a lymphatic massage or de-bloating treatment, I highly recommend it. This is an experience worth prioritizing! by @jalightfoot

Length retention has been one of the biggest things I’ve been on a journey to master, and after a year of consistently prioritizing my hair health, I can finally say: retaining length is possible.

But it takes more than finding the “perfect” product.
Your trims, moisture routine, wash frequency, hair porosity, protective styles, and overall maintenance all play a role in how much of your growth you actually keep.
That’s exactly why I created The Length Retention Blueprint: Our Journey to Waist-Length Hair.

I took everything I’ve learned and put it into an 8-chapter guide that breaks down the why behind length retention AND gives you a strategy for how to actually achieve it. Not only that, it’s in one central place for you to refer back to :) So no gatekeeping over here.

Inside, we cover:
• consistent trims
• weekly wash days
• deep conditioning
• protective & low-manipulation styles
• understanding your hair porosity
• building a routine around your porosity
• choosing products that actually make sense for your hair

If you’ve been growing your hair but struggling to actually keep the length, this guide was made for you.

Comment LENGTH and I’ll send you the link to purchase your copy ($7) And thank you all for your support, it means the world to me 🫂❤️ by @jalightfoot
