Pennine Barrier 50 Mile. Race Recap.

What a journey.

The toughest thing I’ve taken on to date.

Going in, I knew the Three Yorkshire Peaks would be brutal. But repeating one and making our way back to Malham Showground took it to another level. 2,718m of elevation in total 🤯

Early on it was Whernside that set the tone. The longest climb of the day. Step after step, stairs that just kept going.

But when I reached the top, everything shifted.

It wasn’t just relief. It was belief.
From that point on, I knew I was getting it done. No matter what.

Then darkness hit and everything changed.

And then finally, the finish line.

Crossing that line to a round of applause with volunteers still cheering every finisher in through the night is something I won’t forget.

Thank you to everyone who donated to RMHC. £800 raised is something I’m genuinely grateful for 🖤

Thank you to @rosie_martin for always backing me, even when it means dragging her and the kids along to these events. None of this happens without you.

And @chef_nathan_wall completing 100 miles two weeks before and still turning up for this, somehow finishing at the exact same time 😂 unreal effort.

Looking back now, I am proud of this.

But there’s always that part of me that feels like I can still do more.

And that’s what keeps me moving forward.

On to the next 🖤

I get up before everyone else because I’d rather train while the house is asleep than miss time with my girls later.

This week it’s just me and the girls, so today’s run was always going to be on the treadmill.

One early wake up for a bottle later 😅

The plan adapted, the run got done, and my eldest joined me for the finish.

This is why I get up before everyone else. 🖤 by @james.wall4

Still blows my mind that @castore_sportswear invited me to The Stoop. A proper pinch-me moment, and the day was even better than I’d imagined.

Loved getting the camera out and creating some content, photos to come 😉 But getting to meet people with similar hobbies and interests, including a few I’ve followed for a while, made it even better.

I did learn that rugby probably isn’t for me 😅 Those workouts were tough! I’ll stick to running… although apparently I still need to work on staying on my feet 😂

Massive thank you to @castore_sportswear and @harlequins for hosting, and @harlequinscommunity for putting us through our paces. Honestly loved it. Hopefully the first of many! 🙌

How I improved my 10K time 🏃🏻👇

I won’t lie, it takes time. There’s been a lot of hard work, patience and doing it when I couldn’t really be bothered 😅

But these are the three things that have helped me most.

1️⃣ HAVING A PLAN

Whether you use an app or put one together yourself, it helps to know what you’re going out to do.

Most weeks, mine comes down to:

• An easy run
• A focused session (intervals, hill repeats, tempo or threshold work)
• A long run

I adjust it around my goals, but that’s the structure I keep coming back to.

And actually keep the easy run easy 😂 I used to go too fast because I thought someone would look at my Strava and judge the pace.

Honestly, no one cares. They’ll still give you kudos for getting out for a run.

I think that’s part of what puts people off running. You don’t have to finish every run absolutely knackered.

2️⃣ GETTING IN THE GYM

I know, finding time to run is hard enough without adding the gym 😅 But it’s helped me feel stronger when I’m running, and I’m glad I’ve made time for it.

I work on legs and core, but I love training upper body too. You might go to help your running and find you actually enjoy lifting 💪

3️⃣ LOSING WEIGHT

This was a big one for me. Probably one of the hardest parts too.

Losing weight while keeping up my training has made a massive difference to how I feel running. There’s less weight to carry around, and I believe it’s been a big part of getting my times down.

It took months of being more aware of what I was eating and sticking with it. It wasn’t easy, but I don’t want to leave it out when it’s helped me so much.

That doesn’t mean everyone needs to lose weight. This is what helped me, and eating enough to train and recover is still important.

It’s taken months of fitting training around life and showing up even when progress felt slow.

Seeing that hard work and patience pay off is one of the many reasons I fell in love with running 🏃🏻❤️ taken in Ramsgate by @james.wall4

Running has given me so much more than fitness.

It clears my mind, helps me focus on what matters and keeps showing me I’m more capable than I ever thought I was.

PBs I once thought were out of reach. Distances I never imagined I could run.

Somewhere along the way, I fell in love with it. For how it makes me feel, the memories it’s given me and the belief I’m building in myself.

That’s why I keep showing up. 🏃🏻❤️ taken in Ramsgate by @james.wall4

We’re told we need to niche down.

But what if I don’t want to?

I love photography, running, creating content, flying my drone, and most importantly, being a dad of two.

Maybe I don’t need to fit everything into one box.

Maybe I am the niche. taken in Ramsgate by @james.wall4

I don’t run this early because I love the 4:30am alarm 😅

I do it because I love running, but I also want to be home.

Home before my girls wake up.
Home for breakfast.
Home for the little moments.

Running matters to me, but being there for my family matters more.

If getting up earlier means I can have both, it’s worth it. ❤️

How I stay consistent pt 2.

Remember your why ❤️

When the sessions feel hard and you want to quit, ask yourself why you started.
