BUILDING A NEON SHOP :: DAY 1️⃣

Where it started…

Columbus Glass Art Center welcomed artist James Akers (red shirt), who will lead students and neon enthusiasts through a week-long intensive class on building a neon shop. On day 1, participants learned the inner workings of the bombarding process in which tubes are cleaned, filled with noble gasses, and activated using up to 25 mA of electricity. Shocking! #neon #neonshop #glassart #glassstudio taken in Columbus Glass Art Center by @jamesakers2

Alicia Eggert and James Akers were at UrbanGlass yesterday evening for the opening reception of "At a Time Like This," an exhibition featuring the latest iteration of their collaborative work "Your Magic is Real" (2019-2025).

The room-sized installation celebrates collaboration at a time of deep political divisions, and requires human connection to activate its immersive lights and sound.

In a two-minute crescendo, the experience builds into a triumphant celebration as the words "You Are Magic" illuminate the gallery space at the Brooklyn nonprofit art center.

The exhibition is up through May 5, 2025, and also features Eggert's work "All the Light You See (Infinity)" (2019).

Electric Horses Forever, by James Akers // Neon
Now on display at the Helper Mini.

Artist’s Statement
I am captivated by the idea of horses running across the plains and valleys of the West. My partner, Ali Feeney grew up riding horses in Colorado, and has been drawing horses from memory since she was a kid. I often work off of Ali’s drawings to make these horses, typically using a computer and drawing robot to get them just right before using glass tubes, and fire.

Making neon as a career gave me the problem solving skills I needed to look at a drawing of a horse and bend it with glass tubes into a 3D glass horse. The glass is rigid, and using some electricity and noble gases, it glows all over. By mirroring the walls of the gallery, these horses will reflect back an forth- extending on seemingly forever. Viewers near the gallery can interact with their phones by joining the wifi network “Pink Pony Club” and turning horses on and off from just outside the gallery. taken in Helper, Utah by @jamesakers2

I made an Ad! Some fresh content! Maybe this will nudge you to sign up for the class!? It's a multi week intermediate level class- you will get the most out of it if you have some neon experience already.

Sound on for Ai generated musical brainwashing!

I have wanted to teach this class for ages! We are gonna learn free neon design tools to utilize some of the richest color pallets, and wildest effects available in neon. @urbanglass_nyc close proximity to @brooklynglass makes this one of the only places in the world you could take this class!

If you're in Brooklyn and make neon for art/ sculptural/ personal/ signage applications, it is time to take the training wheels off. Head over to my bio, click on that link and sign up. First class is March 15th at 6pm.

Oh, best to click on the link outside of this app so Instagram doesn't see your purchase data. The less info Meta has on you- the better :)
