We’re thrilled to see UrbanGlass’s ongoing partnership with Brooklyn Technical High School featured in GEEX Journal Vol. II!

This past fall, Brooklyn Tech seniors spent 10 weeks at UrbanGlass exploring the fundamentals of neon with teaching artists @molmolkuo and @jamesakers2 .From inspiration and design to fabrication, students experienced the process of bringing their ideas to life in glass.

@geexglass Journal Vol. II features a national survey of student work from subscribing academic institutions—including UrbanGlass. We’re proud to see this work and our students represented!

Stretch Montage!!!!

Went up to @urbanglass_nyc to help @jamesakers2 pull some tubes for a residency. Exploring denser colors and using large amounts of color bar to use with phosphors, James is a blast to work with and pushes me to get better and better at this process. This one of the longest and most fun tube days I’ve ever had, thanks for watching!

I had another couple of days in @vargallery’s neon shop this week, this time practicing on my tube welds with @jamesakers2. I was struggling to think of a final project at the end of the worship, but on Thursday morning I woke up and realized that Milwaukee’s people’s flag @mkeflag is a lot of colored lines! I was able to break it down to a neon tube pattern, and James did a great job of helping me pick colors and making sure everything got safely assembled after I did all of my welds.

These colors are all so hilariously bright that I don’t even know where to put it in the house yet, but if you pass by and see my windows lit up all gold and blue, you’ll know why!

Our Neon class is bending and lighting up their designs this week @cbusglass with the amazing @jamesakers2 leading the charge! Last week they rebuilt the bombarder and now they are putting the shop to good use. #neon #plasma #GlassSculpture #bombarder #NeonSign

This past week I had an amazing time with a bunch of fellow glass & neon nerds at the Columbus Glass Art Center, we came together and revived the old neon workstations to get their neon studio up and running again. It’s amazing how niche the working setup is, especially for bombarding and filling the tubes. We needed specialty skills in electrical, plumbing, and even needed a master scientific glassblower on hand to get all the parts to come together. Thanks again @jamesakers2 and @perseverance_glassworks for guiding this rebuild! #playwi̇thfi̇re

BUILDING A NEON SHOP :: DAY 1️⃣

Where it started…

Columbus Glass Art Center welcomed artist James Akers (red shirt), who will lead students and neon enthusiasts through a week-long intensive class on building a neon shop. On day 1, participants learned the inner workings of the bombarding process in which tubes are cleaned, filled with noble gasses, and activated using up to 25 mA of electricity. Shocking! #neon #neonshop #glassart #glassstudio

James Akers.

He has been in residency at UrbanGlass all year, working on one technical problem: making new neon tube colors. The work pairs custom glass formulations with phosphor blends. Tomorrow is the reveal.

Where: UrbanGlass, 647 Fulton St, Brooklyn
When: Thu Jun 25, 6–8p, free

Roxana de Leon's window installation is up at the same venue through Friday. I'd go on Thursday and see both.

Welcome back your instructor & visiting artist, James Akers. James is a Brooklyn-based artist and co-founder of @nebulaneon Neon, a fabrication studio he runs with Ali Feeney. He received his BFA from Alfred University in 2015. Working across commercial and artistic contexts, Akers has fabricated neon for advertising, television, retail, and fine art, while maintaining an independent studio practice that both draws from and challenges commercial production. His work often integrates glass, neon, and custom electronics, including microcontroller-based interactive systems. His practice explores themes of consumer culture, digital surveillance, celebration, and excess, with an emphasis on process and transparency in construction.
