POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

‘Portrait of Vsevolod Mikhailovich Garshin‘ by Ilia Repin. A knockout painting in the Met NY. The sitter, Garshin, has been painted with such a deep soul. The rich tonal contrasts and lush brushwork are indebted to the art Repin saw while he was studying in Paris. Four years after this was painted, Garshin, scarred by the suicides of his father and brother and his own mental illness, threw himself down a stairwell and died. I love discovering the stories behind the paintings. @metmuseum by @jamesrobertsart

‘Portrait of Joseph Stella’ by Moses Soyer. A cracker little painting by the Russian born American painter who studied art in New York with his twin Raphael - both great painters. This work was on show at the Brooklyn Museum, an excellent museum to visit - loved the curation @brooklynmuseum by @jamesrobertsart

Richard Serra’s major work at Stanford University, Sequence (2006), a monumental weathering-steel sculpture installed at the Cantor Arts Center... wow! Immersive, perfect scale, hot and cold steel, shadow and light play, a wonderful thing to see. by @jamesrobertsart
