Taking Art for a walk; From Tate Britain to the British Parliament.... (From Guernica to Gaza). This performance / lecture was staged just a few months after Oct the 7th and the subsequent start of the Ethnic Cleansing of Gaza, and the ongoing Genocide, which is now 3 years old. The origins of this painting go back to 1993, but I started to rework it in 2023 when Rishi Sunak was still in office and the slaughter had started.
It was completed in 2024 and taken on a walk from Tate Britain to the British Parliament.
It’s working title was “From Guernica to Gaza, from Tate Britain to the British Parliament”. The film of that performance is pinned on my page.
It felt very lonely as an artist speaking out at that time.

From Guernica to Gaza (2)

Once Upon a Time in a Painting:
Arriving into the present from 1917 Palestine, via the medium of Art, Sergeants Sedgwick and Hurcomb, of the British Egypt Expeditionary Forces, are astonished to see the outcome of their accidental meeting with the Mayor of Jerusalem.
The Lockheed Martin F-35i adir, supplied by the USA, supported and maintained by the British and European Union, are currently taking lessons from the Junker JU-87 Stuka dive bomber, in the correct manner of civilian extermination.
The ghosts of Guernica rise from their graves issuing indictments to the cowardly millionaire artists of today….. Goya’s Dog and the spectre of Lorenzetti’s Bad Governance look on from the walls of The Royal Gallery, in the Palace of Westminster, Houses of Parliament.
The Artist of this ‘History Work’ makes eye contact with the sergeants and shares their impotent empathy.

Two Sergeants Hanging on a Letter.

2020-24.

The Father of modern physics and all round clever cookie, predicted in 1948, that a catastrophe would befall those “misled criminals” and “terrorist organisations build up from our own ranks” in Palestine.
This prediction is currently being tested by those who are wanted on charges of War Crimes, Ethnic Cleansing and Genocide……
Those “firstly responsible” are as complicit today as they were over a century earlier.

When I graduated from Leeds Terry Atkinson, knowing I was a Norfolk boy and thinking I would go back, told me to look up an artist and good friend of his who he thought I might get on with, Colin Self, he even wrote me a letter of introduction (since lost).
I never really ‘returned’ home, only in the summers to work (grafting roses) so I never did make contact.
Last Thursday at the PV of his new show at the @frithstreetgallery I told Colin the story and apologised for being 45yrs late.

Two months ago, the Campaign against anti Semitism tried to cancel an event I had organised which was Matthew Collings and I in conversation.
They tried to intimidate the landlord of the venue with spurious legalise and accusations of Antisemitism. Today one of Matthews so called ‘antisemitic’ drawings arrived on my doorstep (I’ve included a totally unrelated photo and comment posted by an Israeli soldier on his own social media account).
As you can see the ‘In Conversation’ event went on as planned, the owner is a great supporter, and my own work was discussed (video should be out soon) and a good day was had by all. by @jamie.wagg

Taking a ‘painting’ for a walk, from Tate Britain to Parliament Sq.
One of our stops along the way was to have a chat about Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill.
In 1917, under David Lloyd George he served as Minister of Munitions, Secretary of State for War, Secretary of State for Air, and Secretary of State for the Colonies, overseeing the Anglo-Irish Treaty and British foreign policy in the Middle East.
Having previously ‘cocked up’ in Gallipoli sending thousands to their deaths.
He was also a devout racist, White Supremacists and supporting Zionism from an anti Semitic position.
But hey….. he’s a British hero right.
