🦏💫Hollywood icon Margot Robbie to produce movie inspired by rhino activist ‘Saving the Wild’🦏💫

Often working undercover and facing constant threats, South African-raised, Zimbabwean-born Jamie Joseph has spent eight years exposing the corruption that has devastated South Africa’s rhinos - a country that was home to around 80% of the world’s population, but has been in an astonishing decline for the past decade - all for a horn that nobody needs.

Now her story, and that of Saving the Wild, the charity she founded in 2015, is the inspiration for a fictionalised movie produced by two times Academy Award nominated actress Margot Robbie and her LuckyChap production banner, the company she co-founded. LuckyChap production credits include I, Tonya, Birds of Prey based on DC’s Harley Quinn, and this year’s biggest movie success, Barbie, which quickly amassed over one billion dollars at the global box office.

Because rhino poaching in South Africa is high reward and low risk, the huge amounts of cash from the sale of rhino horn funds many other criminal enterprises, while at the same time terrorising communities. The human cost of this war cannot be overstated.

Says Saving the Wild Director Jamie Joseph, “I am just the face of activism, and for this story, a way in. The unsung heroes are the rangers and police officers and whistleblowers I work with, persecuted by their state employers for exposing corruption and pursuing high level targets. If we are to honour them, we should honour them with justice.”

Watch & Share RHINO: THE ENDGAME produced by @saving_the_wild and featuring Dr Jane Goodall, and you can help put an end to South Africa’s rhino poaching crisis with MEANINGFUL LEGISLATION. Come on people, help us put the bad guys in prison.

“In a video message, shared by Saving the Wild with South Africa’s Ministry of Environment not long before her passing, Dr Jane Goodall asked the government to introduce meaningful legislation in the race to save the last of the rhinos. South Africa is losing one rhino a day to poaching, and has lost more than 10,000 rhinos since 2010.”
- @economistimpact (Link in bio)

“Saving the Wild, the non profit I founded, has been pursuing high level targets and exposing corruption in the courts since 2016, and is now asking for a minimum sentencing of five years on the first count, and ten years on the second. This will not only create a deterrent for poachers to stop killing rhinos, but it will also root out corruption, preventing unscrupulous magistrates from convicting poachers with nothing but a petty fine.”
- @jamie_savingthewild

——WHAT NEXT?
We are waiting for the Ministry of Environment to table the proposed bill in Parliament and open it up to the public for comment. But there are dark forces working behind the scenes, and this bill will die in silence.

In the spirit of Dr Jane Goodall, be a voice for the voiceless. And working together, we CAN save the rhino.

#10yrsSavingTheWild - The start of 2016 was the start of a new era for @saving_the_wild . While on a story assignment at andBeyond Phinda, having a ball of a time with the Sharks rugby players, a fateful meeting lead me to making a decision that would change the course of my life forever.

I began exposing corruption in the courts in Zululand in the province of KwaZulu Natal, and in April 2016 then Public Protector of South Africa Thuli Madonsela met with me at Phinda and opened up a preliminary investigation into corruption enabling rhino poaching.

Had her term not ended so soon after, I sometimes wonder if we would have had to take the long road, years upon years of battles fighting the government to do the right thing.

Finally, we had a breakthrough in November last year. The Court President is now facing 162 charges in the disciplinary hearing, and possible life in prison if convicted in the criminal trial in the High Court.

A lot of people told us we would fail. That we’re too small, and the corruption is too big. It has come with unspeakable personal sacrifices, but I sleep a lot better at night knowing these people are no longer taking bribes on rhino poaching and crimes against humanity.

Whatever happens in the courts, we took away their power. The criminal trial will drag on, as it always does, but the disciplinary will not, and this only ends one way.

Bumped into these two on a morning walk. 🦒🦒

Young giraffes often spar like this, practising the “necking” skills they’ll use as adults to establish dominance. For now, it’s mostly practice - swinging those long necks, testing their strength, and learning the art of being a giraffe. by @jamie_savingthewild

☠️ 🦏 352 rhinos were poached in South Africa last year. Hunted down, shot, and hacked to death. And the world celebrates this as good news…because there is a slight drop in the annual death toll. It’s utter madness.

Do the maths. @saving_the_wild

Who is feeling that Springbok energy this morning? 😆🏆🏉🇿🇦🍾🥂

World champions South Africa beat New Zealand for a third successive weekend to win the “Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry” series 3–1, taking the last of four tests 43–28 on Saturday.

That’s a Springbok on the cup. And the curious visitor is a nyala. Both antelope, but different.

Close enough buddy, today in South Africa everybody wants to be a Springbok. 😉

To the All Blacks, thank you for showing the world the best version of the Greatest Rivalry, both on and off the field. Much respect. 🙏

@dando_delights_ chocolate macadamias in a wild and remote paradise… Because I deserve it 😊 And so do pangolins rescued by @umoyakhulula.

I spent two weeks in Mana Pools last month. We save the luxury camps for Saving the Wild Safaris, but when it’s just me doing a recce, I go very basic and self catering. Mana is like a second home to me and I know what I’m up against with the nearest town many hours away and terrible, terrible roads.

I ration food, but I always pack a very special treat, and this time it was Dando’s whole roasted macadamia nuts coated in Belgium milk chocolate.

😋 DELICIOUS! And so many in a box it felt like the treat that kept on giving.

Every box sold supports Umoya’s work to rescue, rehabilitate and release pangolins, and so when I found that out I was of course super keen to support with my wallet. And perfect timing because I was able to pick some up from the Big 5 Duty Free shop at the Johannesburg airport.

Makes for a perfect gift too when travelling, but I wasn’t giving my box away…Not a chance.

Thank you Dando for supporting Umoya 💚 They really do deserve the support.

🇿🇦🏉🇳🇿☺️ Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be at this weekend’s historic Springboks / All Blacks game.

And then I went on safari with @thisteeks. 🇳🇿 See previous post. 🐘🐾🦒✨

On day two, his lovely manager Julia told me I was going to the game with him.

Teeks had invited three guests - me, Wandile and Dawn - all Springbok supporters.

The greatest rivalries on Earth don’t have to divide us. Sometimes they bind us.

I was born and raised in Africa, but Aotearoa New Zealand became another home. I lived in NZ from 2009 to 2013, producing music festivals, before founding Saving the Wild and returning to South Africa in 2014 to work on the poaching crisis.

I still return every summer for Saving the Wild events and my whānau.

And I’ve loved seeing Kiwi icons, including Taika Waititi and SIX60, experience South Africa’s wild places between these games.

At the rugby hospitality box, Teeks introduced me to Ji, lead guitarist of SIX60.

“Are you in a band?” I asked. I vaguely recognised him.

“Yeah.”

“SIX60?”

“Yeah.”

@ji_fraser was politely bracing himself for small talk, just as my internal time machine hurtled back 16 years.

“I saw you guys tear the roof off a bar venue in Mount Maunganui in 2010!”

He laughed. “That was a long time ago.”

It was just months before @six60 exploded with the release of their breakthrough single Rise Up 2.0. They’ve been filling stadiums since 2019. 🔥🎸

Mostly we spoke about the band’s time in the wild. Beautiful memories, but harder stories too.

Since 2010, we have lost more than 10,000 rhinos to poaching. 🩸🦏

We need help. We need the endgame. We need justice.

And that is the power of bringing different worlds together, because music, like nature, knows no boundaries.

Sport is different. We want to win, but what a game! The Bokke won by just five points.

On Sunday, All Blacks captain Ardie Savea attended Dawn’s church.

They prayed for Ardie and his injured shoulder. 🙏 taken in South Africa by @jamie_savingthewild

“Ever since I was a boy, I dreamed of going to Africa and seeing animals in the wild. These last few days in Greater Kruger was an experience that moved me deeply.”
-Teeks

✨ Some dreams wait a lifetime for us.

In December 2023, in a twist of fate, rhino activist and @saving_the_wild founder Jamie Joseph, met New Zealand Māori soul singer and songwriter Teeks. She suggested to the global rising star that if he ever toured South Africa, he should stay a little longer and come on safari with her.

And so he did!

After wrapping up a mind-blowing South Africa tour last week, Teeks joined Jamie in Timbavati, Greater Kruger, for a few days of Motswari magic.

There was something about the coming together of two powerful energies - that which Teeks carries within him, and the ancient land receiving him.

From Teeks very first drive, with @motswari_life guide Glen behind the wheel, and Hendry in the tracker seat, the fairytale seemed to unfold before us. The kind of sightings that left even those of us who live in the wild, giddy with joy.

On the last night, on the final bend home, we stopped beside the river. The engine went quiet. The lights went out.

Above us, the Milky Way stretched across the sky, reminding us how small we are, and how deeply connected.

And in the stillness of darkness, fireflies danced around us.

“Magic,” Teeks whispered.

Perhaps that is what the wild does best. It takes the dreams we carried as children, and gives them back to us as memories we will carry for the rest of our lives.

Back in April, Saving the Wild Safaris hosted a group of photographers at @motswari_life - and there were plenty opportunities to capture the magic of the land.

Here we come around the corner and surprise a very impressive rhino bull. Startled, but immediately settles down and carries on feeding.

This is a privilege in South Africa where the rhino crisis rages on. It is a privilege to see rhinos so relaxed and living their best life.

Thanks very much to @timbavati_nr anti poaching. ♥️🦏🙏

@jamie_savingthewild is currently at Motswari hosting one of the most talented people on earth, and the rhino sightings, absolutely everything, has just been exceptional. Such a special time with all.
