You know what neutral spine looks and feels like, but can you actually stabilize in that position?

When I ask clients to bring their legs into tabletop, this is what I’m looking for.

Do they immediately tuck their knees toward their chest and press their lumbar spine down for stability?
Or can they stack their knees over their hips, anchor their ribs with their breath, and stabilize from their core?

Once you can access this position, can you maintain it under increasing demand?

I loved teaching this series this week because there’s something to learn from it at every level. It’s not about reaching the floor or the footbar in your toe taps. It’s about controlling your range of motion without adjusting the position of your spine!

Beginner clients learn what core stability really feels like, while advanced client can explore greater range of motion without losing it.

Even in an abdominal curl, you want to maintain the neutral position of pelvis, if your goal is to build a stronger core. Think about bringing your rib cage toward your thighs, rather than pulling your legs toward the rib cage.

Try it, teach it, and don’t forget to breathe!

A peek inside a private Pilates session 👀

This session was built around improving postural control and building stability and strength through the hips and pelvis.

Because he’s also a recreational basketball player, we incorporated movements that connect directly to the demands of the game including lateral lunges, strong hinge mechanics, shoulder-to-back connection, and plenty of work on controlling the pelvis throughout movement.

Private sessions give us the opportunity to zoom in on what your body needs from session to session. We can spend more time on specific movement patterns, make small adjustments, and I can give you hands-on feedback to help you better understand how you naturally move, what’s going well, and where there’s room for growth.

The goal isn’t just to get stronger. It’s to develop the control, mobility, and coordination to actually use that strength.

This is just a tinyyy window into what that can look like!

This was a content session, not a real client session. I keep my clients off social media out of respect for their privacy. 🤍

Reversing an exercise is one of my favorite ways to teach coordination and body awareness.

When the body can no longer rely on muscle memory, we reinforce the mechanics of the movement, encouraging the mover to slow down and move more intentionally.

Depending on the exercise, the reverse variation can demand more strength, control, and stability than the original.

I love sprinkling these challenges into my classes! Sometimes, I do it with nothing more than the cue, “And... reverse!” Then we see what happens. 😉

What’s your favorite Pilates exercise to reverse? Let me know in the comments!

Microneedling + PRP treatment #2

Comparing my skin before my first treatment to before the second, I’m sure you all can see a noticeable improvement in my skin tone and texture.

This time I wanted to show you what the treatment actually looks like from start to finish from up above!

One more treatment to go, but I’m really happy with the progress so far 🤍 Thank you so much @urbanaestheticmed !! taken in Urban Aesthetic Med Spa by @jamiebetweenclasses

Reverse Swan & Pulling Straps!!

Honestly, anything prone used to be my least favorite exercise to do—mostly because the exercises are so difficult for me. There was a point in time where I had no connection to the muscles in my upper back, and I’ve dealt with rotator cuff issues in the past too.

Learning how to properly strengthen, mobilize, and stabilize my shoulders improved my posture and allows the other muscle in my arms to work much more efficiently, because they work in conjunction with my center rather than independently.

Shoulder strength and stability is easily one of my favorite skills to teach now, and moving the spine in this way feels amazing after a long day of rounding the shoulders. 😂

So if you’ve ever been personally victimized by Pulling Straps… I see you. And yes, you’ll probably do them again the next time you come to class with me. 😚

Cues for thought:
• Glide your armpits towards your ribcage
• Pull your chest forward past your shoulders
• (Specific to pulling straps) dig down towards the floor like your paddling out on a surfboard
• reach your knuckles EVEN longer towards the wall behind you (lol)

How to spice up a plank series? Add a twist! An accessible yet still challenging nod to the classical exercise, snake.

This series (on 2x speed) builds core endurance and rotational strength, beginning with familiar shapes, and then turning them onto their side. Opening into a full side plank is the final progression, an option which further challenges shoulder stability and coordination. To regress the series, the flow can also easily be taught on the knees, where the emphasis is on rotating from the rib cage while stabilizing the pelvis and shoulders.

I taught this sequence in an oblique-focused class, starting with variations of corkscrew + single-strap supine arms to prime the system before ramping up the intensity with this culminating plank series!

Twisted plank cues for thought:

* “Butterfly” the knees apart from one another (top knee reaches to the ceiling, bottom knee reaches towards the floor)
* Exhale to lift the lower side of the rib cage, creating space space to pull the knees underneath you
* Draw the inner thighs together as you extend the legs to assist in stabilizing the lower body
* Create space underneath your armpits to assist in stabilizing the upper body
