Case by Case: Psychoanalysis and the Political Discourse | Book Launch with Patricia Gherovici @patriciagherovici & Jamieson Webster @jamiesonwebster at the Freud Museum

20 November, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Freud’s ‘talking cure’ and its offshoots are more widespread today than ever. But as the divisive issues of our time grow more urgent, a contentious question persists: must psychoanalysis remove itself from politics altogether in order to be effective? Or is it inherently political? Specific disagreements about how clinicians should or shouldn’t engage with imperialism, violence, race, and gender identity point to the broader question of where politics is situated in our psychic life. Is it on the periphery – a symptom or displacement – or right at the heart of the matter?

In this timely book, psychoanalysts Patricia Gherovici and Jamieson Webster examine the vexed relationship between psychoanalysis and politics through a sequence of case studies, exploring the many ways in which the political enters the consulting room. Ranging from early cases confronting homosexuality and race to idiosyncratic analyses disentangling the legacies of state and colonial violence, the authors illuminate how the political shapes our relationships to power, normativity, and identity. These historic cases are prescient of the political dilemmas confronting us today. Rather than dismissing psychoanalysis as irrelevant or reducing it to a vehicle for political positions, Case by Case makes a galvanizing and challenging argument for what psychoanalysis can reveal about our political selves – and how it might transform them.

NYC: On Wednesday, October 7th, at 7PM, Earth presents MORE CAMERAS THAN PEOPLE, a session of live psychoanalysis.

There are ~35 billion cameras in the world today, counting consumer devices alone. The sum of all data-recording sensors–microphones, GPS receivers, thermometers–enters the trillions. Jesus tells his disciples to pray in private, that the unseen is best accessed when unseen. In psychoanalysis, confidentiality and anonymity create a “frame,” a space separate from the outside world conducive to transference. Are such modes possible in our post-privacy world? Jamieson Webster and Gideon Jacobs will conduct a live mini-session of psychoanalysis exploring this question, followed by a discussion with Olivia Kan-Sperling. by @jamiesonwebster

This fall, Broadcast ventures into the deep. 🌊

As a slate of seaward exhibitions opens at Pioneer Works this week—from the cephalopods of @tuomasalaitinen’s SIPHON to the holographic plankton of @_lovelaja—we're debuting our OCEANS collection, with new work from @jamiesonwebster, @sytheauthor, Marco Tedesco, and @leearnold.

Our first dispatch comes from Jamieson Webster, who follows the oceanic feeling across history and psychoanalysis:

“I decided to assemble a library and chase it like the white whale. The results are, at best, higgledy-piggledy, with no true gospel and certainly no complete account. They are simply traces of a feeling that psychoanalysis has never entirely known what to do with, gathered from many analysts, in many languages, across many shores.”

💧 This collection is presented as part of Oceans Season, with support from Dalio Philanthropies (@daliophilanthropies). Stay tuned—across the fall, we'll be covering sea urchins, salinity, deep-sea mining, octopus consciousness, and much more. by @jamiesonwebster

The fetishistic value of clothing—especially shoes, undergarments, and accessories—appears starkly in Sigmund Freud’s groundbreaking 1927 essay “Fetishism.”

Clothing is one of our strange inventions for dealing with the problem of genitals, especially female ones, Jamieson Webster writes in her monthly column, Neurotica. It conceals what is shameful about bodies—as decided by culture—and in concealing it induces a desperation to see what no one wants to see. Clothing becomes a conduit for so many repressed feelings, positive and negative, and a way to try them all out.

Nearly a century after the publication of “Fetishism,” Webster sat down with Bella Freud, a fashion designer, the host of the cult ‘Fashion Neurosis’ podcast, and Sigmund Freud’s great-granddaughter. Bella brings her experience as an analysand to her interviews, alongside her sense of what clothing can mean for us—about us—as a conduit for intimacy throughout our lives. In doing so, she has unwittingly transformed the method her ancestor invented.

Some interviews surprise you, grabbing you by the heart. I spoke with @bella_freud about @fashionneurosis_bellafreud for @cultured_mag asking about her history in psychoanalysis, her relationship to her father and great-grandfather, dreams, and of course clothing. The title may seem hyperbolic, but you’ll find the humbling story of her stumbling into the intimacy of speaking with her interviewees lying down and her generous, protective spirit as she navigates conversations about the vulnerability of appearance, having a body, and our endless difficulties with work and love. It didn’t make it into the edit, but I loved her saying that Sigmund, up there somewhere listening and pleased, tickled her! đŸȘ‘đŸ›ïžâ€ïžâ€đŸ”„ by @jamiesonwebster

Over the past decade, astrology has made a comeback. What does its latest resurgence say about us and the staying power of this ancient form? Is stalking your ex’s Co-Star really the same thing as staking your community’s harvest on the movements of the moon?

To reckon with this *new* new age, we asked a group of writers, artists, scientists, and astrologers to consider the role of superstition in our disenchanted world. The pieces here run the gamut from true belief and ironic consumption to total rejection, but all get at the question: Can the zodiac still offer us transcendence, or is it merely another way to ignore reality by looking for our own reflections in the stars?

From astrology apps and millennial malaise to Ronald Reagan’s White House, Adorno’s horoscope obsession, and the enduring appeal of a good cosmic prediction, Gen Astro traces the contours of astrology’s cultural influence today, featuring contributions by Grace Byron (@emotrophywife), Theresia Enzensberger (@theresia_enzensberger), Jamieson Webster (@jamiesonwebster), Alice Sparkly Kat (@alicesparklykat), Claire L. Evans (@clairelevans), Philip Ball, Joey Frank (@sphynxtits), Stella Belt (@stellabelt), Sam Reynolds, and more.

Are betting apps the fentanyl of gambling?

Psychoanalyst and writer @jamiesonwebster dives into the increasingly ubiquitous world of betting. According to Freud and Edmund Bergler, the gambler’s deepest compulsion may not be to win, but to lose. For her column, Neurotica, Webster interviewed filmmaker, writer, and Bronx Legends founder @jaybulger, whose reporting on the Jontay Porter betting scandal took him inside the world of fixed bets and lifelong gamblers.

“Anywhere lived long enough eventually reveals what is interminably difficult about people, especially people on vacation,” writes @jamiesonwebster.

For our August Hamptons edition, the psychoanalyst and CULTURED columnist considers how her relationship to Shelter Island—which she first visited as a guest at a wedding taking place at the hotel where Oppenheimer and other scientists met after the atomic bombs that ended World War II were dropped—has evolved over two decades. Now, Webster writes, she has other associations with it: “Hell-ter Island, Lonely Island, Shit-Talk Island, Incest Island, Racist Island, Hate-Your-Neighbor-as-Yourself-in-Paradise Island. ‘It’s an island!’ locals always say, ‘What do you expect?’ Then come the familiar complaints about the Hamptons spilling north, the prices of everything getting higher, and how that’s terrible except, of course, for one’s property value. Sigh.”

@jamiesonwebster 'On Breathing' (out with @presspeninsula) covers a lot of bases under the umbrella subject of breath🌬: baby sounds, Covid, language, mental health, breathwork, politics, asphyxiation and psychoanalysis.

@clompch talks to the author about the book’s subject and her personal experiences of writing and breathing.

“One of the important points that I want to make in the book,” says Jamieson, “is that sexuality, language, and breathing are the three great repressions in the human being.”
