Sometimes the most generous thing you can do with something you built is step aside.

In the latest episode of the #NotesfromChicago podcast, @janebeachy talks about how, after seven years at the center of Salonathon, she didn’t want a staff, a hierarchy, or a brand to police. She wanted to make room for what other people would create.

When was the last time you worked hard on a project so aligned with your values, skills, and interests that it didn’t feel like work at all?

Producing the Sustainable Futures Retreat for @poetryfoundation was that kind of experience. I love collaborating with folks to design unique gatherings for their needs and goals, and this one – a rest retreat for leaders of poetry organizations around the country – was close to my heart. As an arts & culture leader myself, I know firsthand how hard it can be to step away from a to-do list to do seemingly nothing. But as participants bonded over delicious meals, rode bikes to the lake, read books in the hot tub, took in a mind-melting space talk, arranged flowers, and ate late night s’mores, I was reminded that the way we define productivity is often short-sighted. If we want big things to happen, we have to invest in the small moments. If we want to feel connected, we must have time to connect. When we put those to-do lists down and do nothing but be present, we make room for repair, imagination, and possibility.

Kudos to The Poetry Foundation for recognizing not only the essential work that arts & culture leaders do but also the space and care that is needed for them to continue to do it. It was a joy to bring your vision to life with your incredible cohort of leaders.

If you work within a community that would benefit from gathering with deep purpose, creativity, and intention, drop me a line. I’d love to collaborate with you!

✨❤️ Immense gratitude to @goldberrywoods, @txatxaclub, @ttsantiago, and @raechardonnay for ensuring this retreat went without a hitch. Huge thanks to @jediscience, Sarah K. Joyce of @glittergutsy (photos 1, 2, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, and 16), @rootedbalancemassage, @ferrisyoga, and Julie Haberichter for enhancing the experience with your talents! And extra special thanks to Chris Guzaitis, Beca Jurado, and PoFo for the opportunity. ❤️✨ by @janebeachy

What a joy and an honor it is to collaborate with Damon Locks & @blackmonumentensemble — a group so powerfully talented that they summoned lightning during “The Body Electric” and a rainstorm INSIDE @gpconservatory during the debut of their new song “Oceans.” Interweaving Black history with speculative futures through layered music, lyrics, and archival audio, BME uniquely bends and blends time to create a new NOW. And speaking of this moment: @ilhumanities is deeply proud to have presented this (thankfully only metaphorically) electrifying performance between Juneteenth and the fourth of July as we reflect on what our nation is and means at 250. If you weren’t there, don’t despair – but *do* look up Black Monument Ensemble and let your future unfold. taken in Garfield Park Conservatory by @janebeachy

A phenomenal trip to NY & NJ to see some deep & inspiring humanities- and arts-driven work that responds to mass incarceration and shows us how the world could look without it. Thanks to @ilhumanities and @mellonfoundation, I’ve had the privilege of facilitating a national initiative called Inside & Out the past few years, comprising humanities councils and their community partners who are invested in creating deeper understanding of the history and impacts of our criminal legal system and resisting its dehumanizing effects. From in-prison educational programs to grants & commissions to original media creation to re-entry support to public programs that center system-impacted voices, the power and purpose of the humanities has never felt clearer to me than in this work.

It was an honor to witness the rites of passage created by 9 women to mark their transitions home from prison through @ritual4return on Saturday. I wish everyone coming home from incarceration everywhere could have the opportunity to tell their story in their own words and reclaim their future in front of their families and communities. I was joined by the inimitable @punikama from HI (@thetrythinkproject), Robert Taliaferro from MN, and Joe Murphy from NY (@humanitiesny).

I was joined by Joe again, along with the wonderful Alex Anderson of @reentrytheaterofharlem, as we visited the @centerforartandadvocacy, another tremendous national effort that supports system-impacted artists through fellowships, capacity-building opportunities, and so much more. If you’re in NYC, you must visit its incredible gallery and try to catch the current show, “A Language We Share: Beverly Price and Gordon Parks.”

Beyond all of that, I was delighted to fit in some hugs with dear friends I forgot to photograph, eat some legit bagels, and roam the streets in one of my favorite places in the world. Filled with gratitude! by @janebeachy

Some more great things from Spain! If you go to Barcelona, don’t overlook Fundació Joan Miró. I’ve been twice now (on visits nearly 30 years apart!) and it remains a true favorite. by @janebeachy

Perhaps this should not seem astonishing, but I did not see one rat on this trip. Bitter oranges littered the ground in Seville and nary a creature nibbled on them. We, however, consumed many delicious things. by @janebeachy
