“I like to call Chicago the fountain of youth. It’s where new ideas are born.” 💡

Jane Beachy (@janebeachy) has spent years proving it. As founder of Salonathon, she turned a weekly residency into one of Chicago’s most beloved gathering spaces. Today she brings people together across the state as Senior Director of Public Engagement at Illinois Humanities.

On this week’s Notes from Chicago, Jane tells @ashinthewindy why she ended Salonathon at its peak and what it taught her about “the secret to life.”

The full conversation drops Tuesday (10/6).

Thank you to everyone who came out to BME’s return to Garfield Park Conservatory! The first and last time we played there was 8 years ago, the performance that became our first album on @intlanthem. The pressure was on for our return. I would say the vibes were great. Thank you to @ilhumanities, @gpconservatory, @project.and, and @bisforbrendah for all of the organizing support! The show was a gathering. The show was a release. The show was a clarion call. The show was a hymn. Together we conjured the rain. Thank you all for being there with us.

Special thanks to @glittergutsy / @ericlabrat for the photos!

Please welcome Professor Shred to the Sharp Cheddar extended universe!! Had a blast weaving memories of the Chicago Loop with the wreckage of (gay?) white men at @ilhumanities WE THE PEOPLE: A People's Salon a couple weeks ago, and as always thrilled to be seen by 📸 @glittergutsy in the process. S/o to our supreme hostess @janebeachy and to the art and organizing stars I had the honor of sharing the night with, as well as this beautiful and thoughtful room of humans who made up the audience. In conclusion, find a community that looks at each other the way @bswinney42 have been for years now!! 💙💙 Live art + organizing + Chicago forever. Xo, Ched/Shred 🧀🧀

It was great to talk with @janebeachy about the humanities and mass incarceration work Illinois Humanities is leading. I don’t think there is a clearer case for why the humanities matters than the work happening inside prisons.

Last batch of the the era I swear. It’s just that I can’t resist because Jewells had clip on bangs and Lucas flushed my pet fish Lucas and we all lived at Beauty Bar and I had pink hair and we all majored in theatre for some reason and global warming wasn’t as bad then so we were always cold but still out and then just a year after this my son appears on the scene and is vibing with the girls
