Founding artistic director @janeecefreemanclark1 is devoted to consciously cast, socially relevant productions.

She is the founding artistic director of Montclair’s Vanguard Theater, which is celebrating its 11th year as a professional regional theater. Vanguard set out with a mission of “changing cultural and social narratives through theater,” summed up in the theater’s motto, “DREAM,” which stands for diversity, reciprocity, education, activism and mentorship.

“Everything you can imagine is represented on that stage,” says Clark. “It seems like such a simple concept, but it makes a huge difference to see yourself and to see a story told through your eyes.

SPRING AWAKENING REBOOT opens THIS THURSDAY!! Look closely… you might see two familiar faces. 😊

Our Summerstock cast is back together for one very special reboot! Hope you guys can make it out!

Jada and DJ are on together as Wendla and Moritz Thursday at 7:30pm and Saturday at 8pm. 🥹💜

So special getting to see these two share the stage together — and to have this beautiful cast back together again!

Directing at Summerstock is one of my absolute favorite times all year, and I’m so excited that we get to spend a little more time with this beautiful show and this very special group of young artists. 💜

DJ started school today — a full week later than Jada, which has NEVER happened! So of course I had to get my LAST “first day of school” picture with the two of them together. ❤️ I feel so blessed to have two kids who are actually best friends. They always have been, and I have a feeling they always will be. That warms my heart more than anything in the world ❤️❤️❤️
And yes, his hand is OK. 😂 He hurt it from hitting a chair a little too hard during “*itch of Living” in Spring Awakening this summer. Come see the reboot if that gives you any indication of how unhinged it is!
And you can catch Jada (Wendla) and DJ (Moritz) on stage together as Wendla and Moritz on Thursday, September 17 at 7:30 PM
and Saturday, September 19 at 8:00 PM. Had to do a plug :) by @janeecefreemanclark1

Senior year 😭 Last first day of school.
They wear backpacks that represent their childhood, and even though you can’t see the front of hers, it’s covered with all the princesses she fancied her friends when she was growing up — never knowing that the most beautiful princess of all of them was (and is) Jada Jane. ❤️ Have the most wonderful senior year, my girl. ✨👑 by @janeecefreemanclark1

I’ve been trying to find the right words for this one, because what Doreen Oliver is doing in “What the Constitution Means” to Me feels bigger than a performance.

I’m so deeply proud of her. This role asks for so much. It requires a kind of vulnerability, honesty, and sacrifice that doesn’t just stay in the theater. It follows you home, it lives in your body, it takes over your life for a while. And Doreen steps into that fully, night after night, with courage, humor, and incredible precision.

She is witty, engaging, hilarious. And then, without warning, she lands hard truths about our nation’s history and the character’s family history —moments so many women recognize in our own lives—that hit you HARD right in the gut.

And just when you think you understand the shape of the show, the live debate begins.

Each performance, one of our Vanguard Theater Company education students steps into that debate, going head-to-head with Doreen, and the audience decides the outcome.

All four debaters have been fantastic! Laci, Pippa, Ella, and this Saturday night, Miss Jada Jane Clark will be taking the stage!

I’ll be honest, after watching her last weekend, I briefly considered intervening and suggesting law school! She argues with such clarity and conviction. (It’s also really special seeing her and Doreen together onstage, as she’s known her most of her life ❤️)

I am so proud of this entire cast and this extraordinary creative team, led by Dana A. Iannuzzi. It’s a beautiful, powerful piece of theater that sparks real conversation.

I hope you can come experience it.

PS - In this reel, you’ll hear Doreen and Jada reflect on the language of this Pulitzer finalist play by Heidi Schreck and why it feels so important right now. by @janeecefreemanclark1

@doreeneverythingisfine who brings Heidi to life in What the Constitution Means to Me, offers a look into the process, and what stayed with her.

This is a piece that asks urgent questions about history, rights, and lived experience, questions that extend far beyond the stage.

Through Into the Process, the cast reflects on what challenged them, what shifted, and why this work continues to resonate now.
This isn’t just a show to watch. It’s a conversation to be part of.
