A year ago today, on October 1, 2025, the world lost one of its most iconic figures in the world of conservation: Dr. Jane Goodall.

Jane taught us to see the world differently, as a tapestry of life that includes humans, wildlife, domesticated animals, and all of nature. She improved our understanding of our closest animal relatives โ€” chimpanzees โ€” and worked tirelessly to ensure their protection. She inspired millions across the world to embrace hope as an action, not as a passive wish. In order to continue her remarkable legacy, she founded the Jane Goodall Institute to carry on her important work.

Jane forever changed our world with her vision, and now we must work to make her vision a reality. Thank you, Jane. ๐Ÿ’š

My internship experience: Oliver

Hello everyone! Iโ€™ve officially wrapped up my time at JGIS! Itโ€™s been an incredible experience learning so much about primates here in Singapore and what we can do to preserve our islandโ€™s biodiversity.

A huge thank you to everyone at JGIS for the support and guidance along the way! From Roots & Shoots programs to public outreach, I am grateful for the amazing insights and memories made along the way. ๐Ÿต๐Ÿต๐Ÿต๐ŸŒฑ by @janegoodallsg

Congratulations to the P5 Outdoor Club students from Valour Primary School for completing their Roots & Shoots project! ๐Ÿ’โœจ

Over seven dedicated sessions, 22 young changemakers dived deep into learning about human-macaque coexistence. They conducted field observations at Coney Island and gathered community insight around Punggol. Their hard work culminated in a special activity at Punggol Regional Library, where they brought the story โ€œFeeding the Monkeys Made a Really Big Mess,โ€ written by JGIS Vice President Neil Humphreys, to life with an amazing storytelling performance using props they made themselves! ๐ŸŽญ

In addition to storytelling, through custom-made games like macaque-themed Snakes & Ladders and finger soccer and a fun activity booklet, the students taught the audience how simple everyday choices can prevent human-macaque conflicts. ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒฑ

Kudos to the students for taking the initiative, inspiring their loved ones, and proving that caring for wildlife starts right in our own neighborhoods! ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’š

Little eyes, fluttering wings, and a whole lot of curiosity! ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿฆ‹โœจ

As part of their Roots & Shoots project, a group of Sembawang Primary School students turned their love for nature into a fun, interactive biodiversity session for MOE Kindergarten children!

After observing the birds and butterflies thriving in their own school discovery gardens, the primary schoolers introduced the kindergarteners to the wonderful world of local wildlife:

๐Ÿชถ Feathered Friends: Uncovering the colorful traits, diets, and unique calls of neighborhood birdsโ€”from the cheerful Black-naped Oriole and Eurasian Tree Sparrow to the familiar House Crow and Javan Myna!

๐Ÿฆ‹ Pollinator Pals: Discovering the secrets of the Common Mormon and Plain Tiger butterflies, from what they eat to why they play such a vital role in our ecosystems.

The kindergarteners got to test their new knowledge with a lively quiz on biodiversity, before wrapping up with an exciting memory card matching game to pair up native species! ๐Ÿƒ

Beyond the games and quiz, the session highlighted a simple yet powerful lesson: that all living things depend on one another, and taking care of nature starts right in our own backyards. ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ’š

Weโ€™re so impressed by these Sembawang Primary students for leading with such passion and helping the next generation fall in love with Singaporeโ€™s biodiversity! ๐ŸŒโœจ

๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ Peace Day always held great meaning for Dr. Jane Goodall, who believed that peace isnโ€™t only between people: We need to live in peace with our planet, too.

Every September 21 on International Day of Peace, Dr. Jane Goodall would share a message about her hopes for the world and her reflections on our place in it. Today, we revisit one of her Peace Day messages as a reminder that protecting wildlife and restoring our connection to nature is essential to lasting peace on Earth.

In honor of Jane, who took her role as a UN Messenger of Peace to heart, letโ€™s each pledge to take one action โ€” big or small โ€” to build a more peaceful community. Practice kindness. Plant a native tree. Pick up litter. Share a coexistence message. Because to quote Jane, โ€œEven small actions, cumulatively, can make a big difference.โ€ ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’š

Spotted: incredible youth action in full swing! ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ“ธโœจ

Students from Spectra Secondary School teamed up with Singapore Wildcat Action Group (SWAG) for their Speckle Swipes Roots & Shoots project to champion the conservation of Singaporeโ€™s critically endangered leopard cats! ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿพ

After learning about leopard cats and gaining hands-on experience in camera trapping, the students channeled their knowledge and passion into designing creative stickers that promote peaceful coexistence between people and wildlife.

To spark change across campus, the students took to the stage with an assembly sharing session, and further engaged with their classmates through interactive activities at information booths.

We are so proud of these Spectra Secondary students for turning conservation knowledge into such a creative, student-led movement. Hereโ€™s to safer roads and protected habitats for our wild neighbors! ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ’š
