The avocado toast at Alta Bakery and Cafe in Monterey rocks with truly stellar avocado—such a treat for East Coasters. Pickled kumquats and garden-fresh, ferny chervil take it over the top. That nine-grain pancake with huckleberry compote in the background was mighty fine, too. Thx for the rec, @erica_marcus! @altabakery #avocadotoast #breakfastinmonterey #weddingweekendfun by @janelear1

Lunch at Little Creek with friends on this rainy Sunday involved lotsa oysters, including those embarazada-style, that is, “pregnant” with hamachi sashimi, ponzu, hot sauce, and tobiko. At heart, I’m an oyster purist, but it’s impossible to resist these. @northforkoysters @davidhenryart @newsdayfeedme #northforkli #greenport #oystersonthehalfshell #rainysundays by @janelear1

Blew into Charlottesville for a (fabulous) wedding and had such lovely food—including a killer masala dosa at the farmers market, roasted green chiles, ditto, and a fizzy limeade at the Timberlake pharmacy. Sausage biscuit just now at the airport pretty darn good too. @janakiskitchencville @cvillecitymarkets @timberlakesdrugstore #hatchchilieseason #sodafountain by @janelear1

Spent this evening celebrating so much: the Chinatown advocate and all-around culinary goddess Grace Young, the 50th anniversary of Les Dames d’Escoffier and the equally venerable Hop Lee restaurant (16 Mott St.), which also made the NYT Best Restaurant list this year (again). Everything was stellar, with a special shoutout to the stir-fried tofu with pickled mustard greens, the gorgeous, perfectly crisped chicken, and the lobster on a bed of longevity noodles. Everyone had seconds and possibly thirds while listening to stories about and from Chinatown’s everyday heroes, including Alice Liu, second-generation owner of Grand Tea & Imports. @stirfryguru @lesdamesny @hop_lee_nyc @grandteaimports @nytimes #chinatownnewyork #eatlocal #shoplocal by @janelear1

The Summer issue of FEEDME is hot off the press and packed with everything you need this time of year: an insider’s take on Montauk, four fabulous ice cream shops, where to eat before or after a concert under the stars at Jones Beach. Yep, there’s lots more but that should be enough to get you started. FEEDME, Newsday’s magazine for LI food lovers, is free to subscribers who opt in, so come join the party and eat with us! I’ll save you a seat, possibly at the Clam Bar at Napeague in Amagansett—because summer isn’t summer without a boatload of golden, crunchy fried clams. Cover photo @yvonneslens. On a scooch of a green acre out at Orient Point, Mimi Edelman grows beautiful greens, roots, herbs and more at I & Me Farm (Sat 10-4; Sun 10-1). This morning, I was especially delighted to find small heads of iceberg lettuce, a true American heirloom that first appeared in seed lists in 1894. It’s easy to dismiss this cultivar as a durable, ubiquitous commodity crop, but when a farmer is savvy enough to keep those bright-green outer leaves that form a ruffle around the compact, almost translucent whorled heart, that party-frock allure will get you every time. While naysayers call iceberg tasteless, I think of it as neutral and clean-tasting, crunchy and juicy, a terrific foil for a rich dressing such as Thousand Island or blue cheese, as steakhouse devotees and the country club set well know. At any rate, it’s a great reason to drop by, say hey, and soak in the overall sunshiny vibe of one of the North Fork’s prettiest little boutique farm stands. @iandmefarmorient @slowfoodusa @snailofapproval #shoplocal #eatlocal #lifarmstands #northforkli #preservebiodiversity taken in Orient Point, New York by @janelear1
