I'M SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS ONE Y'ALL!!!!!

Interested in how and why I paint grass and plants? Want to see why abstraction is so important to figuration? Wanna smoosh some paint around?! This one's for you!

Working from floral still lives and live models, you’ll learn to combine observational painting, photo reference, and imagination to create a final work of the figure in nature. In the first half of the course, students will focus on composition, color theory, and expressive mark making using floral bouquets , learning to see different elements of greenery and breaking down the construction of emotive still lives. In the second half of the course, we will have a 3 week pose with a figure model and discuss how to use a classroom setup and photo references to place them in an imaginative landscape. While this course involves advanced techniques, students of all levels are welcome.

Join me @newyorkacademyofart in November and December :) Link in bio 😘

If you're curious about my glazing process....I'm teaching it at @newyorkacademyofart this fall!!!

I'll be teaching The Beginner's Guide to Indirect Painting.

Part 1: Using plaster casts in the Academy's collection as our muses, we'll learn about drawing, structure, anatomy, value, temperature, and several indirect painting techniques! Glaze! Velatura! Scumble! Learn how to get that beautiful oil paint glow 🤌🏼

Part 2: Using a live model, we'll explore even more structure and anatomy as well as ways to make skin luminescent! This class teaches some Old Master techniques based on Rembrandt, but then moves into some more contemporary methods.

You can take one or both! You DO NOT have to take the first part to take the second part.

This is for all skill levels! Even if you've never oil painted before, I'll be your guide :)

Next stop: warm glaze layers

On this layer, I leave my skin a bit cooler and lighter value to prepare for the glaze, which I know will saturate and darken the skin tone. Indirect painting is like a chess game; gotta think a couple steps ahead.

Glazing is a technique as old as oil paint itself. The translucent layers allow light to penetrate and bounce off lower layers, creating that famous oil paint glow!

Our skin is translucent as well! Light permeates our skin and bounces off blood vessels and tissue in a process called subsurface scattering.

I like to think of my glazing layers as layers of skin. As Willem de Kooning said, "flesh is the reason oil paint was invented."

It's been really fun to use these reels to teach about glazing methods and indirect painting techniques!! My mind is blown by how many people didn't know about it. I love this process and I'm so happy to share it ☺️

There are two types of painters: those that start neutral and add chroma later, and those that start highly chromatic and neutralize as they go. I'm squarely in the second camp. Nothing I love more than a moody glaze on top of saturated color.

Indirect Painting is like playing a chess game; you've gotta think a couple steps ahead.

This highly saturated green glaze looks CRAZY right now, but I know the next step (after it dries) will be an earthy, reddish glaze that will tone it down with the magic of ✨optical mixing✨.

And remember! The secret to great greens is...red!

Nothin' like a little dock painting to close out the summer. I don't paint en plein air very much, but I had to capture my sister looking very elegant in the sunset over Lake Martin.

Gouache is the love child of oil paint and watercolor and I luv it 💖
