POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Rarely keep up posting here but this is a busy weekend. I am speaking about my art practice and the piece in the “Witness to Change” show at the Climate Imaginarium on Governor’s Island as part of Open House New York on Saturday. On Sunday my studio is part of the open studio walks happening around the city. Drop a line if you plan to come and say hi.

4-week CE painting with @janephilipsstudio @academyeverywhere concluded 8 July 2026

Another stunning stage curation by Jane, featuring an eerie fantastical contrast between the red background and blue lighting. Giving grim reaper’s greenhouse/luscious gates of hell. It was fun to observe each artist’s interpretation of the colours and decision to work from warm to cool, or cool to warm. Such a delightful privilege to witness the process!

(Seeing the studios cleared and walls repainted feels like summer is coming to a premature end)

Look at that, I’m alive

I heard that apparently being vulnerable and open is a good thing on social media these days?

Truth be told, I had statistically absurd regular encounters with cancer last half a year. I’ve lost someone close to me and my closest people are loosing their loved ones or battling it. We are kicking the shit out of the cells, nothing to be worried about.

I quit a job that I hated (if you know you know), because it ruined painting to me for a bit. I am an artist because stupidly painting brings me joy like nothing else. I’m regaining it. Did a ton of random little jobs to stay afloat and, most importantly, sane. SSRIs help too, I suppose.

Here are some photos that I should have posted earlier. From a gallery I helped to run to classes I’ve taught, shows I’ve been in, theatre set props I’ve built (IM ON HBO). I even became a website designer and sales manager. Even went to Russia. Also, I cleaned donkey diarrhea from somewhat historical pillars. Wow, even practiced Jai alai (hardest part).

I’m not sure where I am going with it. I’m back. Don’t underestimate importance of your mental health, take your vitamins, kiss your loved ones, call your parents if they’re cool. We don’t have that long on this planet.

SURP Painting with @janephilipsstudio

A thoughtfully curated stage with deliberate storytelling is not only visually striking, but also helpful in keeping a consistent expression and pose as a model. Staying in character is easier while world-building about a vengeful goddess & her war pup fighting f@scism etc. That and well positioned cushions.

Students have an interesting assignment and Sarah’s wip is already delivering (cleverly & adorably featuring her own pup)

I’ve been working on this painting for the past 6 weeks with @janephilipsstudio experimenting with glazing for the first time—and wow, the frustration was real, but so worth it.

Our model @susannahpryce wore the most stunning magenta dress, and Jane pushed the piece further with this teal lighting, turning the whole process into a bold, contemporary experiment.

I looked forward to every single class, Jane’s classes challenged me and stretched me, and i love where it landed ⭐️

Glazing with @janephilipsstudio; we got a colour theory refresher and practiced with the model; it was fantastic to see some example of contemporary artists using indirect painting techniques from the old masters! Off to the Met to drool over those in person 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️ #paintingfromlife #oilpainting #nycart

Holding the Gaze
Closing Reception:
Saturday, March 21, 6-9pm
373 Van Brunt St, Red Hook, Brooklyn
Last chance to spend an evening with these amazing artists, hope to see you Saturday🔥

AXEL Gallery invites you to our exhibition bringing together four women painters working in New York whose figurative practices center lived experience and representation - Cake Rambaud, Emma Hapner, Natalia Kalianova, and Jane Philips. Shaped by diverse backgrounds, the artists depict women as complex, self-possessed presences through expressive mark-making, color, and psychologically charged space. In dialogue, their work reflects a shared generational perspective that reclaims authorship, visibility, and embodiment within contemporary painting.
