I was proud to share my latest banner on stage at #thecreatorsemergencysummit today, helped by fellow picture book author/illustrators @momokodoodles @simonaciraolo @benjidavies and @chrishaughton @weare_betterthanthis The conference had lots of very interesting speakers from organisations like @thesocietyofauthors and @theaoi looking at the effect on creatives’ futures and incomes of the continued plundering of our work for AI ‘training’. There was plenty to be positive about and a great sense of community - swipe to see all three of my AI themed banners onstage, and a bit of the making process. Huge thanks to @abrownjug for the sewing machine! And thankyou Graham Lovelace for inviting me to take part. I’ll talk about the whole experience more in the next issue of my free monthly newsletter, Story Street - if you’d like to know more about the motivation and materials, make sure you’re signed up (link in profile). A few nice things from the last couple of weeks: Very chuffed my print was the window poster for the Jackal Print Exchange, launched today on Hide Hill in Berwick upon Tweed. Huge thanks to Mills and Phil for organising such a lovely swap, I was so happy with the prints I received and the exhibition looks gorgeous. Do visit, it’s open till 4th Nov. Berwick Open Studios last weekend was fab - thankyou @pithsupply for the You Do Yuzu workshop, I loved making my notebook cover - and thankyou @thegoodshipillustration for the real live art club! I remember what a treat it was to join in with this online in lockdown; even more of a treat IRL. Trying on my ceilidh shoes ready for @blazininbeauly - the countdown begins! A whopping bracket fungus like cinder toffee… and a baked bean pie at @ceolcholasa - the best festival 🎻🎻🎻🎻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Best beach and the best ferry @calmacferries A delightful and inspiring exhibition at @openeyegallerye of work by @britagranstrom and @mickmanning.rca and Alex Malcolmson - do go! #FullFathomFive And a lovely gift from @mickmanning.rca - thankyou so much Mick! by @janeporterillustrator

Good to join a couple of protests this week against the rapid proliferation of hyper scale AI data centres. The protests were in Scotland but there are monstrous water-guzzlers springing up unannounced all over the world. And I think many, many people are not yet aware of what’s happening. There’s plenty of evidence that the data centres - which emit a continuous loud hum - are driving away wildlife for miles around as well as sucking up resources that humans need, just at a time when we are facing droughts and rising temperatures. If you’re using AI for memes, ‘artwork’, ‘writing’ and other trivial nonsense, please stop! And find out about a protest near you. @stopaidatacentres.scot @savethelammermuirs Lovely to protest with @jackie_kaines_lang and @tania.willis who were both brilliantly eloquent when interviewed by Channel 5 news. by @janeporterillustrator

✍️ Learn how to make a spectacular 3D concertina sketchbook at this creative workshop led by illustrator Jane Porter @janeporterillustrator! 🗺️ You’ll use folded paper to create your own fantasy version of the river Tweed, then embellish with ink, collage, rubber stamps, curled paper and ribbon. ➿ The session is inspired by the Connecting Threads theme of ‘Under, over, round and through’, playfully exploring how the river moves and what it sees on its journey from the source to the sea at Berwick-upon-Tweed. 🫟 This is a hands-on workshop for all ages from six and up; children must be accompanied by adults. The workshop is suitable for family groups as well as adults without children. Wearing old clothes is recommended if you would like to use ink! ⏱️ Please note that this workshop will run twice on the same day at 11am-1pm and 2pm-4pm.
