Before you cast your vote, hear what they have to say!

We're bringing politics, podcasts and the people together at Co-Space on Wednesday, October 14! We've invited the candidates running for Miami Gardens City Council Seat 4 and Miami-Dade School Board District 1, and almost all have confirmed!

My girl @janeytate of @hylonews will be moderating alongside radio personality & community leader @papa_keith for a live podcast recording meets community open forum!

This isn't a debate, but it is an opportunity to hear directly from the candidates, learn about their priorities, ask questions and better understand who's asking for your vote. The decisions made in these local races directly affect our neighborhoods, our schools and our everyday lives.

So come out, bring your questions, bring a neighbor and let's have some good conversations before early voting begins! Free and open to the community. Pls rsvp, let's make informed decisions at the polls, Miami Gardens!

During a recent episode of Can We Talk, Janey Tate reflected on her experience at Kaleidoscope Live in Chicago and what the moment meant for her as the founder of Hy-Lo News.

Tate talked about the significance of being invited to speak and moderate a live podcast at a conference centered on supporting and celebrating BIPOC publishers.

But beyond the conference itself, the trip gave Tate a chance to step back and recognize how much has changed since she took a leap of faith in 2019 and left her job at iHeartMedia to build Hy-Lo News.

From that decision to grants, awards, new opportunities and now traveling to Chicago with members of her team, Tate said the experience reminded her to pause and be grateful for what they’ve built.

“Who would have thought back in 2019 when I made that leap of faith to now that I would be getting flown out to go speak in Chicago?”

Do candidate photo ops actually influence how you vote?

On the latest episode of Can You Talk Podcast, host Janey Tate breaks down the conversation around Byron Donalds’ recent appearances and photos with members of South Florida’s Black and Haitian communities.

Janey says she can see the political strategy behind the photo ops, but also raises an important question: Does taking a picture with a candidate mean you support them or plan to vote for them?

Her take? Not necessarily.

Hy-Lo News fam, what do you think? 👀 Do candidate photo ops influence how you view or vote for someone? Or is it simply a picture? Sound off in the comments!

In my thriving season 🩵

My role as a Senior Reporter with @hylonews brought me back to Chicago, but this time for an experience that poured into me in ways I’m still processing.

I had the opportunity to attend Kaleidoscope Live! 2026: Policy x Power x Pathways, hosted by @borealisphilanthropy and centered on building a more sustainable and equitable future for BIPOC journalism.

From the conversations and connections to the knowledge, hospitality, laughter and moments of reflection, I left feeling fulfilled.

As a Black journalist, being in spaces where our voices, our stories and the sustainability of the work we do are intentionally centered means something to me. I walked away reminded that journalism is bigger than simply telling stories. It is about community, connection, visibility and creating space for the stories that deserve to be heard.

Here’s to continuing to learn, grow, connect and thrive in every room I’m blessed to enter. taken in Chicago, Illinois by @janeytate
