šŸŒøReintroducing my YA Science Fantasy series, Spark and Blizzard! What excites you the most about my WIP? It's been a hot minute since I talked about Spark and Blizzard on IG! After climbing out of burnout in 2022, I've gotten more excited than ever, started my rewrite, and I want to show it off to old and new followers! This is a YA Science Fantasy series set in a near future Earth with advanced tech/Solarpunk all over the cities. It was on the brink of destruction several decades earlier, but has bounced back with revitalized nature, made more dangerous thanks to magic. Major themes are friendship, trust and lies, nature and humanityā€™s relationship with it, and resiliency. Plus, it has nearly all of my favorite tropes. The series was inspired by the fiction I love (mostly cartoons, anime and video games with a strong fantastical and/or adventure focus). Sailor Moon, Tokyo Mew Mew, JRPGs like Tales of Vesperia, and shows like Avatar: The Last Airbender were the biggest. Itā€™s also inspired by my interests in adventuring and nature and personal experiences. The characters first came to me in 2011, thinking it was just a side project. Slowly, it took over my writing life. Jovita, Dylan, Ranya, Lauren, all consumed my mind for days at a time, like the story I wanted to read as a teen, but couldnā€™t find; full of offbeat characters, an immersive magical world, and adventure. I had to share this story with the world someday. And someday, at last, might be sooner than you think. If you want to know more about Spark and Blizzard and get updates first, subscribe to my newsletter! šŸŽØ by @valkyriefreia šŸ“ø from @unsplash #welcometomywip #sparkandblizzard #aboutmywip #wipweekend #writinganovel #introduceyourwip #amwritingscifi #amwritingyascifi #scififan #scifiwriter #amwritingfantasy #yafantasy #sciencefantasy #amwritingya #youngadultfiction #writingabook #amediting #ilovewriting #storyinspiration #solarpunkaesthetic #bookaesthetic #bookwriting #writingjourney #blackgirlswrite #indieauthorsofig #writingcommunityofig #findmywritingcommunity #blackwritersofinstagram #blkcreatives #blackindieauthors by @janinebatsfl

šŸŽ¤Taking a look back at a New Adult action spy thriller series starring an agent and pop star! Whoā€™s your favorite spy? I listened to both books as ARC around the time they came out (thanks to @netgalley and @macmillan.audio), but I never gave these fast paced action spy thrillers by @marieluthewriter their due! Both books were narrated well by @beccaco and had me engaged from start to finish! Also, the covers are beautiful! The first book, Stars and Smoke, is a great introduction to spy thrillers for those that arenā€™t familiar with the genre. The grumpy spy/sunshine pop star is exciting to see evolve throughout as they start out not wanting to work with each other, but bond throughout the mission with some good chemistry. The two have fleshed out backgrounds and motivations, and are capable in their own right. The sequel, Icon and Inferno, ups the stakes and romantic tension. Both Sydney and Winter have to delve into major league father issues and ex-lovers, while dealing with a more dangerous mission than before. I enjoyed the risks taken to create an even better follow-up to a great first book! As of 2026, thereā€™s no further books announced, but something makes me feel like we might be seeing more of Sydney and Winter at some point. If you havenā€™t picked up these books and it sounds interesting, you should! šŸ“ø from @unsplash šŸŒŸStars and Smoke by [Marie Lu] (YA/NA Thriller/Suspense) An engaging and fast paced action spy thriller with a romantic twist; pairing a grumpy agent with a sunshine pop star with fleshed out backgrounds for a great genre entry point. šŸ”„Icon and Inferno by [Marie Lu] (YA/NA Thriller/Suspense) This sequel ups the stakes in both danger and romantic tension, with both leads dealing with familial issues and plot twists creating a thrilling story from start to finish. #starsandsmoke #iconandinferno #marielu #newadultbooks #newadultreads #thrillerbook #suspensebook #spythriller #readstagram #duology #ilovereadingbooks #bookaddicted #readreadread #booksaremagic #totalbooknerd #bookobsessed #prettybookcovers #bookstolove #youngadultthriller #bookrecs by @janinebatsfl

šŸ’šKickstarter Book campaigns I want you to check out! Giving some love to some campaigns Iā€™ve backed and/or caught my interest. Each week brings new creative gems that would unlikely exist on other platforms or reach mainstream visibility and are being backed by supporters who want to see the projects come to life. Hereā€™s six projects that are running this week. While two are winding down, three more are just starting up. šŸŖClassics Rebooted: This multi author project twists nine classic tales into updated sci-fi novels. I backed this one and itā€™s winding down! šŸŽSnow White & The Seven Dragons by @celine.jeanjean.books: This cozy fantasy adds a fractured fairy tale vibe and some dragons to the classic story. Less than one week left to back. šŸŒŠShadows of the Sea by @audreyterrill_author: This caught my interest partly because itā€™s in the same genre as my book (YA Science Fantasy) and want to support especially a young debut author! šŸŒŸOf Swords and Starlight by @wrenjoneswrites: The Sailor Moon vibes caught me immediately in this one! While this book has already released, this provides access to a special edition with artwork and extras not found on retail! šŸš€Gravitate by @courtneygracepow: I backed the first book of this NA rockstar space fantasy saga when it came out in 2024, and Iā€™m hungry for the next installment! šŸŒ„Where the Sky Begins by @naomivandoren: This is an art book full of the authorā€™s various pieces over the past decade. I backed a previous campaign for her novels and Iā€™m intrigued by this project. Iā€™ve provided a sales copy (or overview) on the slides. If these projects sound interesting, check them out, spread the word, even if you canā€™t back the project! #kickstarterbooks #kickstarterbook #kickstartercampaigns #bookscomingsoon #indiebooks #classicsrebooted #snowwhiteandthesevendragons #snowwhiteandthe7dragons #ofswordsandstarlight #shadowsofthesea #gravitate #wheretheskybegins #specialeditionbooks #limitedreleasebooks by @janinebatsfl

šŸŽ² Diving into the Devious duology! Whatā€™s your favorite heist book? Iā€™ve been following @jessicaolson123 for a few years now and after enjoying her debut, Sing Me Forgotten, I dove into Den of Liars last year and recently finished Heart of Thieves, a pair of Romantasy books that is right on the Young Adult/New Adult line. Thanks to @macmillan.audio and @netgalley for the ARCs! I wanted to celebrate Heart of Thieves releasing to US stores today! The two-book saga follows Lola St. James, the daughter of a mafia boss who owns much of the city, who until four years ago, was hidden away. Enter a bet gone bad and now Lola is sharing a heart with The Thief, aka Enzo. When things go sideways, Lola is forced to enter The Liarā€™s Den tournament, a magical casino tournament ran by Enzoā€™s brother, Nick, aka The Liar. The two books are compelling and engaging with great character dynamics, interesting anti-villains, well built themes and interesting world building in a setting that had a cross of Monaco and Atlantic City in the early 20th century. I listened to the audiobooks and @emilyellet and @dylanrfitz were excellent in both books, and I had a few laughs and tears during their amazing performances. If you are into New Adult Romantasy where the protagonist falls for the anti-villain, and is low on the spice (sensual scenes, no explicit sex scenes) and filled with interesting characters, The Devious is a canā€™t-miss pair of books. šŸƒDen of Liars Text: With great character dynamics, grey and gray morality, an engaging narrative, and well built themes, I loved the casino heist and magical gambling tournament vibes. šŸ™Heart of Thieves Text: The complex character dynamics, captivating banter, high tension, and the immersive setting is kicked up a notch in this engaging finale of this heist themed duology. šŸ“ø from @unsplash #denofliars #denofthieves #thedevious #jessicasolson #newadultromantasy #emilyellet #dylanreillyfitzpatrick #audiobookstagram #audiobooklover #arcreader #romantasyduology #fantasyromancebooks #macmillanaudio #netgalley #villianromance #newbookrelease #happyreleaseday #bookrecs #romantasybooks #heistbooks by @janinebatsfl

With every week, Iā€™m loving the platform more to see projects that might not see much mainstream visibility. Hereā€™s five projects that are running this week. While two are winding down, three more are just starting up. šŸ“šWrite Iconic Relationships by @ffs.media: I read and enjoyed the previous craft book, Write Iconic Characters, which uses the Enneagram to create compelling characters. Itā€™s down to the last day as of this post. šŸ“šWe Met in Yggdrasil by @stefaniechu.author: Iā€™ve supported her previous campaigns and the concept of Sword Art Online and the personal story had me hitting Back This Project ASAP. Only a few days left to back this one! šŸ“šClassics Rebooted: This multi author project twists nine classic tales into updated sci-fi novels. Iā€™ve been looking forward to this one for months and Iā€™m glad it launched this week! šŸ“šSnow White & The Seven Dragons by @celine.jeanjean.books: This cozy fantasy adds a fractured fairy tale vibe and some dragons to the classic story. ā˜€ļøHappy unofficial start of summer! Do you like reading outside when it's nice out? During my hiatus (and for a while before), I've realized that I fell behind on posting book recs on my IG feed. This is a combination of reading more books (I've read 60+ books each of the past few years) and my book rec posts becoming more labor intensive. My recommendation backlog goes back about three years, and I'm slowly going to give these books a space on my IG feed, even if it's not a dedicated post. Each Tuesday from now until I catch up, I'll have a batch post of books that I've read and liked and think that you might like. After I catch up, recommendation posts will mostly be presented in monthly batches the first Tuesday of the following month. If I read a book that hasn't been publicly released, it will be saved for the month AFTER it's out for everyone. Sadly, moodboards for future book recommendations are (mostly) out as I'm reading through these books faster and I'm focusing on writing my own books. This batch covers fiction books in 2023 that I read and liked, but haven't noted on IG. The books are ordered from the date I read them, with the most recent being last. Thanks to @netgalley and the authors/publishers for any review copies. šŸ“šBooks Featured The Mirror Souls by Julia Scott The Anahata Divide by Julia Scott This is the Way the World Ends by Jen Wilde Fractal Noise by Christopher Paolini Part of Your World by Liz Braswell Only A Monster by Vanessa Len Lakesedge by Lyndall Clipstone Forestfall by Lyndall Clipstone Kikiā€™s Delivery Service by Eiko Kadano That Self-Same Metal by Brittany N. šŸ’šKickstarter Book campaigns I want you to check out this week! Iā€™ve been obsessed with browsing Kickstarter as of late, especially the fiction books section. Itā€™s a place where Iā€™ve seen many indie authors have their projects come to life to ways they wouldnā€™t have otherwise! Weā€™re seeing a lot of high quality books rivaling big publishing and I love seeing it as an aspiring indie author myself. Hereā€™s four publishing projects winding down over the next week (times listed are Eastern Daylight Time). The Fidalian Chronicles by @emmacouetteauthor: Iā€™ve done some posts on this COMPLETED epic fantasy series in the past, and itā€™s winding down to the last hours as of this post. The Piscea Chronicles by @kayleydaauthor: A perfect book for MerMay, this COMPLETED fantasy series mixes The Princess Diaries movie with the H2O franchise. Thereā€™s two days left as of this post. I backed this one. Stories That Bleed by @addisonhornerauthor: The third book in a YA paranormal fantasy series with heist elements and plenty of ghosts. Veil of Eden: Expired by @andra.larkin: Iā€™m intrigued by the concept of exploring Artificial Intelligence and a world where thoughts arenā€™t safe except in dreams (maybe). Plus, sheā€™s from Florida as well! Thereā€™s another week in the campaign! I backed this one. I added the sales copies for the first book of each series (to avoid spoilers) on the slides. If these projects sound like your thing, check them out and spread the word and fast, even if you canā€™t back the project at this time! #kickstarter #kickstarterbooks #kickstartercampaigns #thefidalianchronicles #emmakccouette #kayleyda #thepisceachronicles #ofdepthsanddarkness #mermaidbooks #storiesthatbleed #addisonhorner #thevitalianchronicles #andralarkin #veilofeden #veilofedenexpired #dystopianbooks #dystopianscifi #fantasybooks #fantasyseries #booklove #nospicebooks #magicalbookstagram #indiepublishing #indieauthorsofig #indiebooksbeseen by @janinebatsfl

šŸ’§Happy Tuesday! Whatā€™s a book you like that features the ocean in a fantastical way? šŸ¤æ In honor of @rachelreisswrites launching a new book, Seconds to Spare, today, I wanted to look back to her debut novel, Out of Air, which turns 1 tomorrow! I listened to Out of Air as an ARC in April of last year (thanks @macmillan.audio and @netgalley) and tore through the book in two days! In short, five teen diving friends, the Salt Squad, discover a legendary haunted cave, triggering a chain of events that brings upon big changes and uncovers old secrets for both our group and the world around them. Out of Air has the perfect mix of fast pacing, intensity, horror, and suspense! All wrapped with great world building and an immersive setting that left me a bit haunted! The characters felt like a tightly bonded friend group, and while thereā€™s a F/M and a F/F romance (no spice), both are mostly secondary to the friend dynamics. The diving procedures felt accurate as well. And the ocean felt magical and haunting as well, in a way I wanted to dive in, but stay away! While this is a horror book and the tension never let up, it felt optimistic when it came down to it. The audiobook by @grshalan was excellent, her voice reflecting the emotions and making the intense scenes that much more resonant! It was so good that I bought my own physical copy from @timbrebooks! There is some body horror, violence, and profanity, along with underwater sequences that do get intense. Text: This fast-paced underwater adventure never let off itā€™s intensity, with a well-developed friend group, buried secrets, and haunting vibes carrying me through each page! #outofair #rachelreiss #debutnovel #yahorror #yathriller #youngadult #yareads #youngadultbookstagram #yabookstagram #bookgram #bookishlove #bookreader #readingtime #summerreads #booksonthebrain #dontbugmeimreading #bookishescape #bookishfeed #bookishgirl #bookishflatlay #bookfeatures #beautifulbooks #prettybooks #bookrec #youshouldreadthis #arcreader #audiobookreader #bookrecommendation #oceanbook #bookbirthday by @janinebatsfl

āœšŸ¾Hello everyone! Itā€™s time for a long awaited life/author update from me! Whatā€™s something youā€™ve been up to lately? Itā€™s been a very long time since Iā€™ve posted about anything besides the latest bookish releases, and I wanted to bring everyone up to speed about whatā€™s going on in the past year or so. TL;DR version... Back in the summer of 2024, I placed my social media platforms on hiatus, including my newsletter. This came after my confidence was shattered from some devastating feedback. I believed that my writing was inherently flawed and I had to change myself into something that I couldnā€™t become in order for my writing to be publishing quality. I felt stuck in rewrite loops and considered walking away from writing forever. Thanks to some inner reflection, enjoying my inspirations, and encouragement from writing buddies who believed in my story with its current soul, I gained back my confidence. Spark and Blizzard is NOT cancelled. In 2025, I rewrote the whole story. While it does address much of the critique of said devastating feedback, it was not a direct response to it. Iā€™m planning to hand my story to an editor in the next few weeks. Iā€™ll give a more detailed timeline once that happens. While I was gone, I started a Ko-fi, mostly serving as a tip jar at the moment to help me publish my debut novel FINALLY! I also hope to post some short form writing to give people a taste of my writing style. My newsletter will restart in the coming weeks, so if you havenā€™t subscribed yet, this is where Iā€™ll reveal my news first. #authorupdate #writercheckin #writingcheckin #yaauthorlife #writerscommunityofig #blackwritersrock #blackauthorsofig #blkcreatives #amwritingya #scifiauthor #amwritingfantasy #sciencefantasy #authorgram #writinganovel #writingabook #instawriter #writersjourney #authorplatform #lifeofawriter #authorlife #writingbreak #writinggoals #writeyournovel2026 #igauthorlife #futureauthor #floridaauthor #aspiringauthor #creativelifehappylife #beyourself #creativeprocess ā˜•ļø https://ko-fi.com/janinebats by @janinebatsfl

šŸ’šKickstarter Book campaigns I backed this week and want you to check out! As an aspiring indie author, I adore browsing on Kickstarter and seeing bookish projects come to life. And on occasion, I buy them! While Kickstarter funds all types of projects (not just books), KS allows indie authors to publish high quality books to the level of big publishers that would otherwise not be possible. I adore seeing how creative these projects are from the fancy books to the swag and the enthusiasm! Plus, if you back, youā€™ll be among the first to read the books! Hereā€™s three Fantasy publishing projects that Iā€™m backing this week! First is Curse of the Moon by @karynenorton. Itā€™s the third book in the Half-Blood Chronicles, an Epic Fantasy series, and Iā€™ve been a big fan so far and canā€™t wait to see where the saga goes. Second is Skyship Pirate by Brigid Collins. Itā€™s the second book of a Steampunk Fantasy series full of adventure. I havenā€™t read this series yet, but Iā€™m excited for it! Third doesnā€™t launch until Friday, but my friend @catherinekopfauthor is launching Fallon Primrose and The Enchanted Storybook, the first in her new Middle Grade Fantasy series featuring a magic school, creature companions, curses, and a mystery to solve! Iā€™ve seen this book evolve from the start and so proud itā€™s coming closer to publishing! Thereā€™s illustrations by @authorxzombie inside. I added the sales copies for the first book of each of the series (to avoid spoilers) on the slides. If these projects sound like your thing, check them out and spread the word, even if you canā€™t back the project at this time! #kickstarter #kickstarterbooks #kickstartercampaigns #skyshippirate #theclockworkkingdomsaga #brigidcollins #curseofthemoon #thehalflightchronicles #karynenorton #fallonprimroseandtheenchantedstorybook #fallonprimrose #thepaweddynasty #catherinekopf #fantasybooks #fantasyseries #booklove #nospicefantasy #fantasybookstagram #fantasybooksofig #authorssupportingauthors #exclusivebooks #bookcomingsoon #instareads #allthebooks #bookishlifestyle #indiepublishing #indieauthorsofig #fantasyreader #magicalbookstagram #fantasylit by @janinebatsfl
