Kanazawa is one of our favourite places in Japan, and honestly in parts feels like Kyoto without the crowds.

You can wander the old geisha district at Higashi Chaya, walk through Kenrokuen (one of Japan’s most famous gardens), browse the seafood at Omicho Market, and try the gold leaf crafts the city is known for.

It’s also an easy trip by Shinkansen, so it works for a short stay or as part of a bigger Japan itinerary. We actually caught the bus from Nagoya which is a great option too!

Save this for when you start planning your Japan trip, and send it to whoever you’d travel with. If you’ve been to Kanazawa, tell us your favourite spot in the comments!

Geisha or Oiran? Here’s the difference 🇯🇵

Oiran (花魁) were elite courtesans in Edo-period Japan, known for their elaborate kimono, towering hairstyles and ornate hairpins. Unlike geisha, who specialised in traditional arts and entertainment, oiran belonged to Japan’s historic pleasure quarters.

This Oiran Dochu (花魁道中) is a recreation of their grand procession, held at Nagoya’s Osu Street Performers Festival every October. It’s free to watch and a fascinating way to experience traditional Japanese culture.

Think Japan is just Tokyo, Kyoto & Osaka? 🇯🇵

There’s a whole other side of Japan waiting to be explored.

We teamed up with Trip To Japan to create a 7-day Central Japan itinerary taking you through:

📍 Nagoya
📍 Nakatsugawa & the Nakasendo
📍 Takayama
📍 Shirakawa-go

Think historic post towns, mountain scenery, traditional villages, incredible local food and far fewer crowds.

This is the kind of route we’d recommend if you want to see a different side of Japan - and it’s especially easy to explore from Nagoya.

👉 We’ve put the full itinerary together with Trip To Japan - find it via the link in our bio.

Tokyo is cool and all… but have you been to Nagoya? 👀

Japan’s third-largest metropolitan area deserves a little more attention we think!

We’re a British-Japanese couple living in Nagoya, and we’re on a mission to show you why it’s worth adding to your Japan itinerary.

Tokyo has so many different sides to it ✨ These are five neighbourhoods we’d recommend exploring beyond the usual spots!

• Nakano for retro shops and unexpected finds
• Kagurazaka for quiet alleys and old Tokyo charm
• Azabudai Hills for modern architecture and greenery
• Yurakucho for izakayas beneath the train tracks

Whether it’s your first trip to Japan or your fifth, there’s always another side of Tokyo to discover.

Save this for your next Tokyo itinerary, and send it to whoever you’re travelling with.

Which neighbourhood would you visit first?

Part 1: Kiyosu Castle 📍

Japan has so much more to offer beyond Tokyo and Kyoto!

We’re launching a new series: Japan Beyond the Tourist Spots, exploring places and experiences that are easy to miss on your first trip.

First up: Kiyosu Castle, just outside Nagoya. It’s connected to the story of samurai-era Japan, and you can enjoy the castle views without paying to enter the castle itself.

We’re based in Nagoya, so we’re excited to share more of the places around Central Japan that deserve a spot on your itinerary.

Follow along for more places to add to your Japan trip.

Shirotori Garden, Nagoya ✨

We spent Sunday exploring Shirotori Garden in Nagoya where we live, and it was such a lovely change of pace.

Entry is just ¥300 per adult, so if you’re planning a Japan trip and want to see somewhere beyond the usual stops, save this one for later 🌿

In this guide, we’re sharing our favourite Nagoya experiences, where to explore, which areas to stay in and what local dishes you need to try.

A weeknight dinner in Nagoya, and a reminder of why we enjoy living here ✨

As two locals, we’re often asked where to eat in Nagoya and which food experiences are worth making time for.

One we’d recommend trying in Japan is omakase. Letting the chef choose each course, discovering seasonal ingredients and seeing the care that goes into every dish makes it feel like much more than just dinner.

We visited Sushi Ura Yama Honten in Sakae, and one of the best things is how easy it is to get to. It’s only a 3-minute walk from Yabachō Station, making it a convenient option if you’re exploring central Nagoya.

If you’re adding Nagoya to your Japan itinerary, this is one to consider for a special evening out.

📍 Sushi Ura Yama Honten (鮨うら山本店)
Address: 5-1-33 Sakae, Naka-ku, Nagoya, Aichi
🚇 3-minute walk from Yabachō Station, Exit 1

Lake Ashi might be one of the prettiest places in Japan 🇯🇵

Especially when you find a spot where the lake, mountains and Mount Fuji all come together.

But here’s the thing about Hakone: some of the best views aren’t all in one place. You’ll want to explore different parts of the lake, and knowing where to stop makes a big difference.

We’ve put together a map of 50+ places across Hakone to help you find those spots, without spending hours researching everything yourself.

Our Hakone: Our Complete Guide includes:

🗺️ 50+ spots pinned on a map
🗻 The best places to see Mount Fuji
⛩️ Lakeside views, shrines & scenic spots
🍜 Where to eat and drink
♨️ Onsen and places to stay
🚋 How to get around Hakone
📍 A 2-day itinerary to bring it all together

Planning a visit? Comment HAKONE and we’ll send you the link 📌

Kenroku-en in Kanazawa is one of Japan’s three great gardens, and the one at the top of the list for us.

The name means “garden of six attributes”, the six things traditional design says a perfect garden needs: spaciousness, serenity, artifice, antiquity, water and broad views.

Look out for the Kotoji lantern by Kasumigaike pond and the pines held up by ropes, which go up for winter from mid November.

It’s easy to rush through Japan. A place like this is a reminder to leave room for stillness.

Entry is about ¥320, go early, and Higashi Chaya and Kanazawa Castle are an easy walk away - we started with these first and wandered over the the gardens before lunch 😄

Save this for your trip, and tell us what kind of travel you enjoy most 🙌
