Hello all from an older, more tender, tired yet still inspired me!

This year I turned 55. The last 18 months have been overwhelming. Joy remains, though it sometimes walks with grief.

My father passed away 2 years ago in February. The subtle tethers and anchors that root us to the earth and tie us to stories are loosened and that is its own journey.

My brothers and I sold the house in July.

Time kaleidoscope spinning. Skateboarding and playing in the streets behind the shopping center. The box-fan days in our hot attic bedrooms, our stormy parents, art projects scattered across the table, dad home from work, the neighbors hulking their grocery bags, Notes, books, photographs all fading into piles of boxes and storage units.

My amazing kiddo entered his Senior year in NYC studying film, 22 and calm, introspective, creative and good.

To work and and love (for 10 years now) with Anya inside the great complicated wheel of co-management, relationship and the worlds we come from. Not easy. Full of work. Full of honor.

The push to raise money for the new studio took it out of me. We steward a non-profit in 2026, the most anti-art moment in history. The fascists marching. Pointing at ‘communist’ and migrant boogymen to distract from the oligarchy as we fight with one another.

The funding landscape is decimated but each day I pray that somewhere out there is a person that wants nothing more to do with their money than keep art and art teaching alive.

The thinning hair, the slowing body… each morning reflecting something beautiful sometimes something harder to look at.

The birds call, the sun shimmers across the river, the sounds of owls echo in the hollow, the laughter of artists in class tumbles across the driveway, volunteers shuffle armloads of vegetables to cook in the noisy kitchen, the cricket drone humming.

Thank you body, thank you life, thank you time… and as always, I apologize for not being a good friend or communicator lately… I am holding on, and I’m so glad you are too! by @jaredtaylorw

Jared Williams facilitates this month’s Contact Improvisation Jam at the Field Center!

In this warm-up into open jamming we will explore how we might track, enter, cultivate and exit trios and group improvisation

Jared has been studying, researching and falling down inside of CI spaces since 2011.
He has learned Contact Improvisation from and worked with Nancy Stark Smith, Karen Nelson, Taja Will, Chris Aiken, Jennifer Nugent, Keith Hennessy and Scott Wells among many others and has been facilitating and teaching Contact Improvisation since 2016.

He founded the JP Contact Improvisation Jam in Jamaica Plain, Boston where he lived for many years and continues to teach and facilitate CI based workshops and events in his role as Director at the Field Center in Vermont.

In his dancing he is interested in how we dance with the world as it is, how we cultivate an ethical wildness, group wilderness as places of emergent structure, rest and edges.

Jared Williams facilitates this month’s MONTHLY CONTACT IMPROVISATION JAM
In this warm-up into dancing we will explore where we might find moments of possibility inside the fall and rising from the floor and how these two moments of gravitational navigation might serve as moments to join or leave a dance.

Trying to remember to dance. That I was a dancer. That I have a body. This year has been full of sorrow, gratitude, grief, isolation and events that have shaken my heart, my family and the country. And still… these new floors coming in, dancing that will yet be, and my body ever changing by @jaredtaylorw

POEM FROM A JOURNAL
2019

From 3 rooms away
I watched my old father’s proud body
Impossibly tall but now with the willowy softness of age,
Hulking its way through the pantry
And up the shallow hill.
Toward the small house

His steps less sure now
His feet searching the ground beneath them in a sort of punchy shuffle.

And it seemed to me, that in fact
He was carrying a great bag of treasure and shadows
That he would never share

And I was filled with such admiration
For how tightly he had held on to it all
And for how long

Never bending to the lie
That a life is more important
If we hang it all on the laundry line to blow around in front of everyone.
But oh. The things that must be rattling around in there.

And as he passed slowly behind the hedge and out of sight
I imagined him;
In his room
Toeing his shoes off, one at a time,
His hand holding fast to the table to balance the turning world.
And lying his great body down across his bed with a deep sigh.

And soon I guess
Would be napping soundly [as he is so apt to do]
His bag of treasure and worry
Lying there on the floor beside him.

This event has become so important to me. And how I love these people.

Over the past couple of years, curating and holding all that there is to hold at the Field Center has felt much harder.
The exhaustion at walking up the hill creatively and structurally every day, of trying to keep so many balls in the air [and I have dropped many] without losing sight of myself has felt really real.
I have aged a lot, and often, joy seems hard to find. Sometimes I am not sure any longer why I am doing it.

But each spring, for two years now, this shifting cohort arrives and the clouds seem to part for a while and I’m reminded of why I am here and who I get to meet in this life. I am reminded of magic and of the importance of just being with other artists. There are a few times during the year at the Field Center when I really feel that, and this is one. It is maybe the most precious thing I have ever helped make.

You all are so kind, so hard working, so gifted and SO hilarious. The ridiculousness of time together punctuated by deep conversations on how to re-build and re-imagine and morning birdsong and meals and truck rides.

Thanks guys. You remind me about resilience and friendship and how to tell a good joke. I really needed that.

F.I.R.E. [forums for indigenous research and exchange] emerged out of conversations nearly 4 years ago with Ginger Dunnill @awapuhilah and exists today as a week-long co-curated group residency that invites up to 25 Indigenous and First Nations artists from all modalities to come for a week to connect, strategize, relax and connect with fellow artists working in the turtle island eg: ‘u.s./canada’ today, offering a rare chance for the folks to make work, rest and be in residency as a group. This residency is fully curated by and for a rolling group of indigenous contemporary artists. Each year, previous participants are invited to ask other artists to attend the coming year.

The world is ablaze, the troubles uncountable, the fear is thick around us.
Still there is time, and always has been, for joy, for connection, for care and for making work.

Till next year, Live, Laugh, Lube. taken in The Field Center by @jaredtaylorw
