Recently I had the privilege of taking on a project in Timor-Leste, completing ecological surveys for an ecotourism carrying capacity assessment with Griffiths Institute For Tourism. I feel so lucky to return to this beautiful country years after I first visited as a school student, now to contribute something to the communities that call these reefs home. Timor-Leste, particularly Atauro Island, has some of the best dive sites in the world with incredible coral reefs, fish assemblages and endless visibility. I can’t wait to get into the data and see what is revealed.
My time was made even more enjoyable having worked with the best dive team @compassdiving @ultramel44. Mel’s expertise was crucial in the success of this fieldwork, and the boating crew helped everything run smoothly.
I also had the opportunity to interview and present my early findings to various stakeholders from Timorese government, NGOs and dive operators. It was an honour to learn from some great minds who are passionate about ocean conservation.
There is so much polarity in this job, from long nights stressed in the office writing papers and working with data, to visiting incredible places like this and pinching myself at just how lucky I am to be paid to follow my passions. Life is wild 🌀
